Ships Ahoy - Scallywag: In the Lair of the Medusa

This Press Release announces the availability of Scallywag: In the Lair of the Medusa Chronic Reality's single-player "dungeonstomp," as well as a playable demo for the game on this page:

Hampstead, NC, 27 September, 2007 The hour has arrived! Adventurers, now is the time to go forth into the dank darkness overgrown with bizarre flora, and face untold horrors in a quest for fame, fortune, glory, and ale! No, we're not talking about your computer room (although cleaning up those fuzzy gray Taco Bell wrappers may not be a bad idea), but the deadly catacombs found in Scallywag: In the Lair of the Medusa, now shipping worldwide!

Scallywag: In the Lair of the Medusa, developed by Chronic Reality and published by Shrapnel Games, is a single-player dungeonstomp that hearkens back to good ol' days of dungeonstomping. There are no bothersome NPCs with their tales of woe and FedEx fetch quests, no need to worry about whether you need to play Lawful Stupid to get the "good" ending, nor will you need to pick up a $19.95 strategy guide to actually figure out the level layouts. No, Scallywag: In the Lair of the Medusa is all about hacking and slashing your way through eighty randomly generated levels, collecting loot and power on your quest to lay the smack down on the final boss monster. Remember, don't think, just kill!

Scallywag: In the Lair of the Medusa is available for Windows based PCs for only $29.95. Currently shipping and only available as a physical product, it will also be available for download very soon if you would prefer that method of delivery. We should point out that the non-label side of the physical CD makes an excellent mirror for when you encounter a medusa in real life, potentially saving you from an eternity in a rock garden. That alone should be reason enough to grab a copy, but maybe you want to hear more.

Scallywag: In the Lair of the Medusa is essentially two products in one. The first product is the exciting adventure quest of the game's title which players can immediately dive into once installed. Players take on the role of Rapius, as he battles his way through eight different underground worlds, all randomly generated with each new game, as he attempts to save his beloved ShrOOm ale supply. Oh, and as a byproduct of that save the good citizens of his valley. Hey, a hero needs to have his priorities in order!

Play at four levels of increasing difficulty, and battle an army of monsters each with their own unique strengths and weaknesses. Discover the weird and wacky effects of mushrooms, ales, and more. Collect items and combine them to create even more powerful items, and always be on the prowl for more oil. Only your lamp keeps the darkness at bay. Too bad it doesn't keep the monsters away, too. And then there are the "mutators"; numerous conditions that can be imposed on the player, which can also stack for really interesting combinations.

The second product is the Random Adventure Game engine, or RAGe. RAGe powers Scallywag: In the Lair of the Medusa and is completely open to players. The adventure never has to end, never grow stale! Literally everything and anything in the game can be easily modded by users. The level of modding is entirely up to the individual, but regardless of whether you're just changing out an item's properties or dropping in new art and sound, it's a snap to do! Most modding can be done with basic Windows applications everyone already has access to, although you can get down and dirty with a shot or two of C++ if desired (but definitely not required for the majority of mod making). Be sure to stop by the Shrapnel Games forums to share tips on modding, and check out the possibilities that RAGe provides.

Scallywag: In the Lair of the Medusa is part game, part toolkit, but all unlimited entertainment potential. Battle in the depths against the Medusa, or battle against your own creations! Make the adventure you want to play! Years of possibilities, all for only $29.95!

To order Scallywag: In the Lair of the Medusa please visit:

www.gamersfront.com/xcart/Scallywag-In-the-Lair-of-the-Medusa-pr-16179.html

To sample the game download the demo at the following link. Some limited modding is allowed in the demo, but it pales in comparison to what the full game allows.

  • Young Clive Barker
Can Video Games Be Art? on Digital Trends is a podcast featuring an interview with Clive Barker in which the author comments on debate over whether video games can be considered art, a topic stirred by statements that they cannot by film critic Roger Ebert. Of course opposing opinions on topics like this cannot be tolerated, and a story about the podcast on GameDaily BIZ highlights the fact that Barker calls Ebert "a pompous, arrogant old man, and he's not going to stop us from making games or enjoying them or... making them art." For the record, old-timer Ebert is eleven years older than young Mr. Barker.

Out of the Blue

Had an outage here this morning, sorry about that. I guess this just follows the trend lately here, hopefully a corresponding streak will follow when everything goes perfectly (of course they happen all the time, it's just harder to appreciate smooth sailing than it is to get seasick when the waters get rough). As Lloyd Bridges once put it, looks like I picked the wrong week to give up drinking.
