id on Linux Support

John Carmack made a post to Slashdot to a thread called Is id Abandoning Linux? looking to assuage fears of Linux users (thanks Jacek Fedoryñski). Though nothing is promised, the id Technical Director indicates a Linux Rage client is probably in the cards:
There is certainly no plans for a commercially supported linux version of Rage, but there will very likely be a linux executable made available. It isn't running at the moment, but we have had it compiled in the past. Running on additional platforms usually provides some code quality advantages, and it really only takes one interested programmer to make it happen.

The PC version is still OpenGL, but it is possible that could change before release. The actual API code is not very large, and the vertex / fragment code can be easily translated between cg/hlsl/glsl as necessary. I am going to at least consider OpenGL 3.0 as a target, if Nvidia, ATI, and Intel all have decent support. There really won't be any performance difference between GL 2.0 / GL 3.0 / D3D, so the api decision will be based on secondary factors, of which inertia is one.

Renegade Redux?

The latest installment in Rumor Mongering Control on GameSpot based on a help wanted ad for an Audio Artist at EALA speculates that EA may be considering reviving Command & Conquer: Renegade, the first-person shooter based on the C&C RTS franchise, a possibility that was the subject of rumors earlier this year (story). They also hash through other game series that may be covered by the listing, but the "C&CX" portion seems to indicate the Renegades conjecture is on the right track. Here's a bit:
Does the idea of contributing your specialized knowledge in sound design to the next generation gaming platform for one of EAs widely recognized leading franchises get you pumped? EA has an exciting opportunity for a Sound Designer who will work closely with the Audio Director on creating sound effects, dialog and music for a next-generation first person shooter game. You will be instrumental in designing audio elements for a high profile new intellectual property.

SUMMARY:
Responsible for designing and implementing sound effects for C&CX including sound effects design and editing, music integration, field recording, technology development and documentation.

Crysis System Specs, Sort Of

The Crysis Minimum Requirements have been published (thanks Voodoo Extreme), along with a clarification that these don't actually represent the final requirements, but are for reference only. Confused? So are we:
UPDATE: These system requirements were released by accident and are not an indication of the final minimum requirements for Crysis. Crytek are still optimizing Crysis and so as soon as they get a clear understanding of what will be able to run this game, they will release the final requirements to the public. I'll leave the unfinalised requirements below for reference only. So at least we know what the minimum requirements are not :-)

Out of the Blue

A comment from my pal Devicer prompted me to check for new firmware for my router, and sure enough, the firmware I was using was so out of date it needed updating twice, once to an interim version that allowed updating to the newest release. This added about a million new configuration options, but also seems to have improved the router's performance a bit, which is a pretty good deal.
