Kingdom Elemental Tactics Patch

Chronic Logic now offers a new patch for Kingdom Elemental, updating this strategy/RPG to version 1.4 while invoking a name change to Kingdom Elemental Tactics. This press release highlights what's new about the renamed edition of the game. Word is:
Chronic Logic announces the release of Kingdom Elemental Tactics version 1.4, a major update to Kingdom Elemental, a real-time tactics game from Chronic Logic and Liberation Games. KE:Tactics takes core game play elements from real-time strategy, tactics, and role-playing games and combines them into a game that is painfully easy to pick up and play without committing your entire life, unless you have no life...in which case you may not find Kingdom Elemental to be an adequate substitute.

Zeno Clash Announced

Valve announces Chilean developer ACE Team has licensed the Source engine for Zeno Clash, an upcoming fantasy-themed action/fighting game due for release next year. The theoretically musical Flash Zeno Clash Website is online, offering preliminary information and some screenshots, and here's the announcement that has further details:
Santiago, Chile - August 28, 2007 - ACE Team, an independent game development studio based in Santiago, Chile, today announces it has licensed the Source® engine-the core technology behind Half-Life® 2-for an action-fantasy game in development for the PC.

Zeno Clash is an action game with a strong focus on melee combat set in a punk fantasy world. Featuring up close and brutal combat in a first-person perspective, the game is played in battle scenarios where the adversaries are always dangerously close and the use of exotic firearms and artifacts is a commodity. The new close combat mechanics are a deviation from traditional shooting in the FPS genre that will feel fresh for players.

The first chapter is set in a fantastic & chaotic world where the main character has been exiled from his clan and hunted down by his own brothers. A desperate journey past the forbidden desert will bring him to the end of the world.

"Working with Source gives us the features, tools, and flexibility we need in an engine to bring to life a game world beyond anything seen before," said Andres Bordeu, game designer with ACE Team. "Source is an incredibly flexible engine that lets us create environments with rich visuals, expansive and highly-detailed believable characters that interact with players in intelligent-and challenging-ways. We look forward to delivering a fantastic experience to gamers in 2008."

"We're pleased that the ACE Team has chosen the Source engine for their promising debut game, which will expand the use of Source into new gameplay and visual styles," said Jason Holtman, director of business development at Valve. "As we continue to evolve the Source toolset, we will continue the tradition of supplying underlying technology for such innovative projects."

ACE Team is a new studio located in Santiago, Chile comprised of professional game designers, artists, and programmers who have worked on a number of games for both PC and Xbox Live Arcade platforms. Newell: Vista-Only DX10 "A Mistake"

Gabe Newell: DirectX 10 for Vista was a mistake quotes Valve's Gabe Newell decrying Microsoft's decision to make DirectX 10 exclusive to Windows Vista as a mistake that's harming the PC gaming industry (thanks Slashdot):
In an interview with heise online, Gabe Newell, president of Valve Software, said that Microsoft made a terrible mistake releasing DirectX 10 for Vista only and excluding Windows XP. He said this decision affected the whole industry as so far only a very small percentage of players can use DirectX 10.

When developing cross-platform games which are also released fo Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, developers look for the smallest common denominator. And since neither Microsoft's nor Sony's new consoles support Shader Model 4.0 for DirectX 10, only few games use it, he said.

In addition, Newell bemoaned the increasing lack of input device diversity in PC gaming culture. He would like to see controllers like the Wiimote or the Guitar Hero guitar, but since DirectX support for devices like these had increasingly been reduced over the last few years, developers didn't dare implement these expensive innovations.

Wing Commander Soundtrack

Wing One offers the original soundtrack from Wing Commander in DRM-free mp3 format for online purchase (Ad-Lib sound card required… okay maybe not). This is a welcome bit of actual nostalgia for a favorite old school game considering how little the recent remake had to do with the original. Word is:
You will hear the authentic, original MIDI files, playing back on a Roland MT-32 sound module, as you would have heard if you were playing a Brand New Wing Commander game on The Best Game Sound-Equipped Computer Available At The Time. A touch of Roland Sound Canvass (in MT-32 emulation mode) was added just because it was easy to do and made the tones just a tad-bit richer. Other than that...Welcome To The State of the Art in PC Audio, circa 1990!!!!

Out of the Blue

Well, the aftermath of yesterday's oral surgery does not seem to nearly as severe as last time, which is fortunate considering how much nastier the surgery itself was. In brief, it took a few hours, long enough for the Novocaine to start wearing off, which was pretty damned unpleasant. Anyway, I'm pretty much fine now, so I won't complain too much.

Meanwhile, the good news of the day comes by way of Enahs, who informs me a third season of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is in the works, pointing the way to this incredibly NSFW video promoting the new season. Wee!
