Postal III Website

This press release announces the launch of a website for Postal III, amusingly failing to provide the URL. A little intrepid investigation reveals the site is here, where word is the Source-engine shooter sequel is being co-developed by Akella/TM Studios and Postal originators Running With Scissors. The site includes an image gallery and a description of gameplay, which includes three ways to play: "The Good, The Bad, and Insane." The description seems to indicate that the new collaborator is not curbing Running With Scissors' signature outrageousness, as it states: "POSTAL III is not intended for Politicians, your mom, your little sister, or the priest molesting her. It is a game about free will. Violence begets violence and the choice is yours."

  • Team Fortress 2
Illustrative Rendering In Team Fortress 2 is the name of a new trailer (which oddly refers to itself as a "paper") describing "a set artistic choices in real-time shading techniques, which support each other to enable the unique rendering style of Team Fortress 2." That is the rather dry introduction to a rather dry clip running through the variety of methods used in rendering the characters in Valve's upcoming multiplayer shooter that support the goals of allowing easy identification of player classes in various lighting conditions while creating a distinctive style. The clip is available on 3D Downloads, ActionTrip, FileFront, and FileShack.
  • Space Siege

  • Tabula Rasa

Command & Conquer 3 Expansion Revealed

Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath Expansion Announced reveals plans for an expansion for EA's RTS sequel by way of the debut Command & Conquer BattleCast TV Show. Here's word on the Kane's Wrath add-on, due in 2008 for PC and Xbox 360:

While C&C3 became the Xbox 360's first real-time strategy game, the radial interface that eased manage unit construction wasn't included. On the BattleCast show, the development team announced that 360 players would get the radial interface in the new expansion pack.

Heavy Duty Changes

The Heavy Duty Q&A on StrategyCore.co.uk offers a nostalgic look back at E3, where they spoke with Peter Winichenko about Primal Software's upcoming action strategy mech game. Topics include the switch in focus to strategy, the game engine, environments, RPG elements, plans for a demo, and more. This genre switch is still apparently sinking in, as the Heavy Duty Website still calls this an action game, but the release date for the project has been updated somewhere along the way, our last notice of this was when the game was delayed from Q4 2005 to Q4 2006 (story), but the release date now reads Q4 2007. Here are a couple of pertinent questions and answers about strategy behind moving away from action:

SC: Did Heavy Duty start out as an action game?
At some point it started out as an action game, but that was many years ago. But even at that time we already thought that it would be much better to make it as a strategy game. The first idea was to make a really advanced engine with one big planet and try to make a global strategy game with some action elements, with strategic control, combots, mechs, air simulator. The thing is that the developers are fans of the X-COM series, so they decided to move in that direction.

SC: Why was it changed to a strategy game?
As this game is developed for PC, it seems that the audience is mostly interested in strategy games and role playing games. As it is a game for PC only, that is why it was changed to a strategy game. There is a big audience for PC strategy games right now. But we didn’t forget about people who like action games, so we’ve got those elements as well.

Out of the Blue

I know TV commercials tend to insult one's intelligence in general, but there's a spot around here that's really starting to get under my skin by doing so with its weird air of condescension. It starts by saying "people are smart," before going on to point out people don't like smoke and mirrors, "unless you are an illusionist, which is a fancy word for a magician." Tell me again how you think people are smart before you explain a simple (but apparently "fancy") word to me? Oh well, they go on to point out that this is the best possible time to refinance your home, so they are probably not actually counting on how smart people really are.
