Ubisoft has officially announced Beowulf, the upcoming game tie-in with a Robert
Zemeckis adaptation of the classic untitled epic poem about the heroic figure.
The game, first revealed in May ( story) seems to be unconnected
with a Beowulf project revealed in early 2006 ( story) that we are
presuming is dead with no mention of it on the
4HEAD Studios Website. There are screenshots from the project on
Gamer's Hell, where they
also have a trailer, which is also mirrored on
FileFront. Here's the announcement of the new game, which
carries a release date of November of this year on multiple platforms to
coincide with the movie's release: SAN FRANCISCO – July 26, 2007 – Today
Ubisoft, one of the world's leading video game publishers, announced that
Beowulf(TM), an action combat video game based on Paramount Pictures' and
Shangri-La Entertainment's Beowulf, the upcoming feature film from Academy
Award®-winning director Robert Zemeckis, is currently in development for the
Xbox 360(TM) video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, the
PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system, the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable)
system and Windows® PC. The Beowulf(TM) video game is being developed by the
award-winning team that created the original Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced
Warfighter® in Ubisoft's Tiwak studio. The Beowulf(TM) video game is scheduled
for worldwide release in conjunction with the movie's opening in November 2007.
The Beowulf(TM) video game takes players deep into groundbreaking director
Robert Zemeckis' vision of the classic saga, Beowulf. Gamers live the life of
Beowulf, the legendary Norse warrior with the strength of 30 men who is torn
between the nobility and brutality within him. Arrogant, self-serving and
lustful for gold and glory, Beowulf will journey to Denmark to destroy a
bloodthirsty beast wreaking havoc on a frigid land. But evil persists, and
Beowulf succumbs to its lure of even greater fame, quietly maneuvering to claim
the Danish throne. As King, Beowulf must face the consequences of ambition, even
as war descends on the realm. As Beowulf, players lead their men, called thanes,
into battle, slay the Titans of a dying age and crush the enemies that threaten
to annihilate both their kingdom and people. Only then, when Beowulf looks
Destiny in the eye, will he know what kind of hero he has truly become.
"Ubisoft, Paramount Pictures and Shangri-La Entertainment have been working
extremely close in developing Beowulf,” said Gilles Matouba, creative director
at Ubisoft. "From the very beginning, we have had an unprecedented level of
access to information and assets from the movie. This access, coupled with the
creative and technological abilities of our team, has allowed us to capture
aspects of the film and translate them perfectly into compelling gameplay
elements such as the visceral hand-to-hand combat, dynamic swordplay and amazing
visuals, while giving us the creative liberty to go even further by creating
exclusive content for the game that is unexplored by the film and even the
classic tale.”
Key features:
• Delve even deeper into the adventure as gamers will play through 30 years of
the Beowulf story not seen in the movie to experience more of Beowulf's life and
mold their own legacy.
• The mystical world of Beowulf comes to life in stunning fashion. Powered by
the next evolution of the award-winning YETI technology used to create the
critically acclaimed Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter® and Tom
Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter® 2, Beowulf(TM) delivers an unrivalled
graphical experience.
• Army of up to 12 thanes to unlock as players increase their heroic experience
(by saving thanes, killing giant monsters, etc.).
• Players use the thane army to their advantage by giving orders, assigning
positions, tailoring weapons to the situation or enemy and by triggering in-game
mechanisms.
• The thane army evolves with upgradeable weapons (swords, mace and spears),
skills and abilities.
• Use legacy experience points to gain thanes, replace weapons and upgrade
Carnal abilities.
• Carnal Power allows the use of stronger attacks and special weapons. Carnal
upgrades include less daze after use and prolonged use of Carnal Fury. But if
used too much, there will be grave consequences.
• Dynamic combat system including combos, parries and increasing skills as the
player progresses.
• Grab ability allows Beowulf to hold on to walls or climb, as well as fight up
close with visceral hand-to-hand combat against enemies and giant monsters.
"The talented creators at Ubisoft are transforming our vision of the film into
an interactive experience that extends the epic adventure far beyond its classic
storyline,” said Robert Zemeckis, director of Beowulf. "We've been thoroughly
impressed with what we've seen from the game makers and are confident that
gamers will find it to be an immersive and entertaining experience that goes far
beyond the traditional movie-licensed game.”
Groundbreaking director Robert Zemeckis offers a vision of the Beowulf saga that
has never been told before. In a time of heroes, the mighty warrior Beowulf
slays the demon Grendel and incurs the wrath of its monstrous, yet seductive,
mother in a conflict that transforms a king into a legend. Beowulf stars Ray
Winstone in the title role and Anthony Hopkins as the corrupt King Hrothgar, as
well as John Malkovich, Robin Wright Penn, Brendan Gleeson, Crispin Glover,
Alison Lohman and Angelina Jolie as Grendel's mother. Paramount Pictures, in
association with Shangri-La Entertainment, Presents an ImageMovers Production of
a Robert Zemeckis film, Beowulf.

captured in the Lost video game," said Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse,
executive producers of the 'Lost' television series. "Ubisoft has done a
fantastic job and come up with a game that is visually amazing and imaginative
both on its own and as an extension of the world of the show."

Power on for 'Heroes' game on the Hollywood Reporter has a confirmation from
San Diego's Comic-Con of plans for a game based on Heroes, the hit NBC
television series (thanks
FiringSquad). The Heroes game is a third-person action game from Ubisoft to
be released as early as next year. Here's a bit on Heroes, as well as Lost, and
Avatar: NBC's hit series "Heroes" is powering up for a video game
adaptation by French gamemaker Ubisoft.
The long-in-the-works deal gives Ubisoft the rights to build a third-person
superhero action game that brings the series characters, locations and story
lines to next-generation game consoles and the PC. The untitled game could be in
stores as soon as late 2008.
"We're very excited to be making the 'Heroes' video game with Ubisoft," said Tim
Kring, executive producer and creator of "Heroes." "Time and again, Ubisoft has
proven they can turn licensed properties into fantastic games."
The deal represents Ubisoft's second big licensing announcement of the week,
coming on the heels of Tuesday's revelation of a partnership with filmmaker
James Cameron and 20th Century Fox on a game for the 2009 sci-fi film "Avatar"
(HR 7/24).
Both projects are bound to be topics of conversation at this week's San Diego
Comic-Con International, especially at a "Heroes" panel. Ubisoft also plans to
get buzz going there with another TV property, unveiling the first trailer for
"Lost: The Video Game," created in partnership with ABC and set for release in
early 2008. In that game, players will play a passenger on Oceanic Flight 815
who interacts with the main characters on the show and battles the smoke
monster.
A banner atop EA's Command & Conquer
3 Tiberium Wars Website heralds the coming of a "Revolution" for the latest
installment in the RTS series (thanks Ant and
Planet Command &
Conquer). The banner simply says: ""08.07.07 Command & Conquer: Tiberium
Wars Will be Revolutionized." There is no explanation of what this revolution
will entail, but August 7 is only a couple of weeks off, when this will
presumably be clarified.
A demo for Anderson & the Legacy of Cthulhu is now available, offering the
chance to sample the horror of this upcoming game based on the literary work of
H.P. Lovecraft. There is an English demo and a German demo, which is
considerably smaller, for some reason. Both downloads can be found on
3D Downloads,
FileFront, and Gamer's Hell, while
the English demo is available on
ComputerGames.ro,
FileShack, Gameguru Mania, and
Strategy Informer.
A demo is now available for Ship Simulator 2008, allowing potential skippers and
Gilligans the chance to take the helm of a virtual watercraft in a sample of the
latest installment in Lighthouse Interactive's seafaring series. In the demo the
player will captain a KNRM rescue boat. The 150 MB download is available from
3D Downloads,

The Red Orchestra Ostfront 41-45
Website offers a tease about the upcoming summer update for Tripwire
Interactive's World War II first-person shooter: Roswell, GA, 25th July
2007 - Tripwire is pleased to provide a sneak preview of one of our biggest
updates yet for Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45, which contains a number of new
features.
The first "BIG" announcement we have is a massive new map entitled - Krivoi Rog.
This map is an all out long range tank slugfest featuring a playable area over 4
kilometers long by 4 kilometers wide and a viewable range of 3000 meters. Set on
the plains of the southern Ukraine the level pits the heavily armored Tiger and
early war Panzers against the speedy T34/76. The update also features a new tank
variant - the Panzer IV G, as well as a new option to manually reload tank main
guns, choosing the next round type first before reloading.
Next up we have added several new graphical enhancements to the game. The game
now features an all new adaptive bloom system that aside from looking amazing
also simulates the effect of the eye adjusting when looking at bright areas. For
those of you that experienced a "blurry" effect with the old bloom system
(especially at low resolution) you'll be happy to hear that the all new bloom
effect is crystal clear even at low resolutions. And for even more eye candy,
Anti-Aliasing and Anistropic Filtering settings are now configurable in-game.
Many of the devs and testers have commented that with these new settings RO
almost looks like a new game!
Finally, the next update will include many new server admin requested features
as well as a string of bug fixes and community requested tweaks. As this is just
a teaser we won't go into all of those just yet, but keep an eye on
www.redorchestragame.com for more
details coming soon. We will also be looking at opening up some beta testing for
the community shortly, so keep a good look-out for news on that!
No quotes. Do you miss them?

The first couple of Wing Commander games (and expansions) are still among my
absolute favorite gaming experiences of all time (hence the BlueHair thing), so I have
been eagerly looking forward to Wing Commander Arena for XBLA since it was
announced. Now if I paid more attention to console doings like that I'd have
known the deal already, but I was shocked (shocked I say!) to learn this is a
third-person space combat game, even though all the prior Wing Commander games
were first-person, in spite of the series launching a full 17 years ago. Not
only is it third-person, but it's basically 2D, offering simple loop-de-loops as
a variation from combat that takes place on a horizontal plane that even
includes obstacles that cannot be flown over or under, making it far more of a
multiplayer Zaxxon with Wing Commander spacecraft. Now that having all been
said, I have to say that my initial impression is the game is quite fun, and I
look forward to playing around with it some more. However, it does nothing to
satisfy my passion for a true multiplayer Wing Commander experience, with
first-person combat in 3D space, and it saddens me that this game, which could
have been released under any title, diminishes the prospects of a true WC1/WC2-style
game.
