Beowulf Game Revealed

Time to open the good mead, as Ubisoft announces Beowulf movie tie-in has word that today's "Ubidays" event held by Ubisoft in Paris saw the unveiling of plans for a Beowulf game. This is a tie-in with an upcoming movie based on the untitled epic poem known by that name, but seems unrelated to this Beowulf game (after a millennium, we're probably in ©/™-free territory here). They are not revealing details such as target platforms at this point, but do say the game "should re-invent the hack-and-slash genre." According to IMDB, Robert Zemeckis' movie based on the poem is due in November of this year, which probably serves as a good indicator of when to expect the game.

Dark Messiah to Expand?

Also from the Ubidays extravaganza is a story on Eurogamer saying the brochure for the event is "flaunting" a logo for Dark Messiah of Might & Magic: Elements. No announcement has been made so far in connection with this, and they prudently point out that while this sounds like a Dark Messiah of Might & Magic expansion or sequel, it is also possible this refers to a coming console release based on the M&M action game.

Ships Ahoy - Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

Walt Disney, or maybe it was someone else at that Mickey Mouse outfit, sends word that the Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End games have shipped to stores for various platforms, including Windows (though the PC/Windows logos are not worthy of inclusion on the games' official website). Word is:
BURBANK, Calif. - May 22, 2007 - From islands and pirate ships in the Caribbean to the streets of historic Singapore, adventures lie ahead in the Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End video games. Inspired by the events, locations and characters from both the second and third "Pirates of the Caribbean" films, the Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End video games are now available at retail stores worldwide for the Xbox 360(TM) video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, the PLAYSTATION(R)3 computer entertainment system, the Wii(TM) home video game system from Nintendo, the PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system, the PSP(R) (PlayStation(R)Portable) system, Nintendo DS(TM) and Windows PC. Players will take on the roles of Jack Sparrow, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, as well as other familiar characters as they face swashbuckling skirmishes and acrobatic maneuvers in games that feature action and humor while extending beyond the story, environments and characters of both films. More than 2.8 million copies of the game have been shipped to retail stores worldwide.

"Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End allows players to experience a swashbuckling pirate's life through adventure and swordplay that goes far beyond the events of the films," said Craig Relyea, vice president of marketing, Disney Interactive Studios. "With its unique, dynamic gameplay and stunning graphics, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End provides a new and significant chapter in the Pirates of the Caribbean video game franchise."

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End takes players to treacherous and exotic locations to encounter a wide variety of notorious pirates, mythical creatures and fearsome villains. Players will develop swordsmanship skills throughout the game as they experience a story that is familiar to the films, but features new storylines and a unique ending.

Evening Q&As

  • World in Conflict
World in Conflict: The Massive Q&A on Computer and Video Games subjects Massive president Martin Walfisz to their questions about the upcoming alternate-history RTS game: "After Ground Control 2, we started work on a number of concept designs, but in many ways we still wanted to work on a strategy game but our real desire was to attempt to 're-invent' the genre. The cold war setting came about because we wanted to deal with realistic, modern warfare, but not with any current conflicts. As such, the 1980s setting was a pretty obvious choice, partly because it had never been done before, and partly because it's focusing on the two biggest military superpowers of the late 20th century. There's obviously a lot of potential that comes with such a setting, and we loved working within it!"

You can also take to the skies with a Druid Epic Flight form or by questing for your very own Netherdrake." BF2 Patches Ending?

Planet Battlefield links to what they seem to feel is a credible blog post on DigitalBattle that refers to an unlinked forum post indicating that no further patches for Battlefield 2 are in the works (thanks Ant). The last patch issued for the military shooter sequel was the version 1.41 update from November (story), and according to the report, with the former members of DICE Canada having formed Red Jade (story) and the remainder of DICE at work maintaining BF 2142, there is no one to support the older game. The post also points out that companies rarely officially announce situations like this, so while it is still possible EA/DICE will officially deny this rumor, it is doubtful that they would ever officially confirm it.

Red Orchestra Patch Plans

The May Patch Changelog on the Red Orchestra Forums offers details on the next patch for Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45, Tripwire Interactive's World War II first-person shooter. The new version will add several features to support competitive gaming, a soundtrack to finally add an orchestra to Red Orchestra, and new community generated content (including 10 new maps). Thanks CJ.

Morning Q&As

  • Team Fortress 2
Valve's Robin Walker talks TF2 on Eurogamer is a Q&A on the coming remake of Team Fortress: "In the multiplayer space, you're obviously going to retrace your steps a lot, that's what multiplayer's about. Content you're consuming is generated for you by other players; that's what multiplayer is. And so we were thinking about how many maps we should build and so on, and one of the things that anyone who's played online PC games for some time has noticed is that if we build 100 maps it won't matter; the community's going to choose five or six they want to play and play them to death."
  • Hellgate: London
Flagship boss Bill Roper explains Hellgate: London on Play.tm is a Q&A discussing the upcoming action/RPG: "We want all of the fans of Diablo to feel right at home within Hellgate: London, but also be experiencing some great new twists, turns and innovations. We're doing a much better job of immersing the player in the world, telling stories and making the character a central figure in the tale. There are more game play mechanics that we can explore because of the ability to play the game from both the first and third person perspectives. And, of course, being in 3D with true physics lets us do some very fun things that we weren't able to achieve in Diablo II."
