Archived News:
Saying he hopes it "kicks off a GREAT year for the Enemy Territory franchise,"
id Software programmer Timothee Besset uses his
.plan File to announce the release of a universal binary for Intel Macs to
run Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, along with an updated SDK to cover the new
release: I've uploaded a universal binary of Wolfenstein ET to our ftp
server [1] and bittorrent server [2].
md5: 39cb5f3dcc07b9a56afddad3868652c2 Wolfenstein ET.2.60c.dmg
I've been putting that build together as a side project for a while now, and it
was time to get it out. I'll watch for feedback and fix showstoppers (if any).
The client will work against the official ET 2.60 servers running etmain/, and
PunkBuster is included.
I hope ETPro and other major ET mods out there can update and support the new
Mac client soonish. Meanwhile you may have a bit of trouble finding servers that
will accept this new client (the best approach may be to use qstat [3] and
filter for servers running etmain/, I haven't found a good third party server
browser for OSX at this point)
I updated the SDK [4] (there are very little changes to the source), in which
you'll find XCode projects to compile the universal binaries of ui, game and
cgame.
There. I hope that kicks off a GREAT year for the Enemy Territory franchise :-)

Blizzard hints at
new StarCraft by 2008 on Pro-G reports a quote from Blizzard Entertainment's
Itzik Ben Bassat during a WoW retail event indicating they may announce another
StarCraft game before the end of next year. It's nothing certain, but sure to
cheer fans of the sci-fi RTS game. Here's what he had to say: I'm a
StarCraft player myself and I hope it's not a decade, and we launched StarCraft
in 1998, before I'm standing here again, celebrating the next game in the
series.
The X Motor Racing announces a name
change for the independently developed racing simulator announced under the
title No Brakes: X Racing.
The site states the name was changed "after investigations of the physics
model," which presumably demonstrated the virtual cars to have brakes. Word is:
"The main feature is the real 3D wheel simulation. That allows to implement new
features in racing simulators - make full 3D road surface ( pits, stones, road
humps etc )." There are new
screenshots in the gallery and a new
trailer on the movies page.

- Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
Computer
Games Online's Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Q&A kicks off a two-part
conversation with Paul Wedgewood about Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, Splash
Damage's upcoming multiplayer shooter: "As a player, you fight within a
coordinated squad, choosing to play as either the Strogg (a biomechanically
augmented alien race with advanced technology), or the Earth’s Global
Defense Force (a human paramilitary organization with conventional military
weapons), making use of a wide range of items, tools, weapons, vehicles,
defense turrets and artillery types. The two teams battle against each other
in a series of campaigns that reflect the invasion, taking place in varied
environments crossing several continents. However, rather than run around
endlessly capturing flags, you take on a specific combat role such as
assault, infiltration, or support, and then pursue military objectives with
your team to secure victory. ETQW has a really strong focus on on-foot
combat, as well as air and ground vehicles, artillery, mines and defense
turrets."
- WoW: The Burning Crusade
The
WoW Q&A on GameSpot talks with Blizzard's Jon LeCraft and the
Burning Crusade Q&A on FiringSquad talks with Blizzard's Jeff Kaplan
about the imminent Burning Crusade expansion for World of Warcraft: "Some
have misconstrued a science-fiction aspect with the draenei, but what people
tend to miss is that there has always been an otherworldly leaning in the
storyline from the very beginning. The Titans themselves traveled through
the Twisting Nether and shaped worlds. The orcs come from the very same
planet as the draenei and were brought in via an inter-dimensional portal.
These are elements of the story that haven't changed. I don't think this
does anything to change the current gameplay so much as continues to advance
the storyline and expand upon the idea that Azeroth is just one world of
many that has been affected by the Burning Legion. We now have the
opportunity to explore one of those worlds with the addition of Outland."
- Warhammer Online
The
Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning Q&A on MMORPG.COM talks with Erik
Mogensen of Games Workshop about the Warhammer MMORPG: "Heh heh, the
toughest thing for me is remembering to call them ‘EA Mythic’ now! Honestly,
that’s the most noticeable change, which I realize isn’t very exciting but
there you go. I work directly with the art team, the designers, the content
guys, the producers as well as marketing and PR and the truth is there’s
been no major alteration to how we interact. EA clearly supports Mythic and
trust their expertise as well as their relationship with us. All of GW’s
contact with EA has been positive, and they’re clearly excited and fully
behind the game. In actual day-to-day terms though, all the same people at
Mythic and GW are working together just as before, only now with the world’s
biggest publisher supporting us all. It’s a great place to be."
Okay, looks like the DNS update propagated pretty fast, as the new mail setup
seems to be ticking right along. I'm sure there will be a couple stragglers, and
I apologize again if you have had trouble with the site or mailing me during
this whole escapade. Please return your tray tables and your seat backs to their
original upright position.
Tomorrow is the official launch date for World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade,
and some retailers are preparing to serve eager beavers at the stroke of
midnight.
This page lists where to find midnight store openings in the U.S., including
events where you can pick up signed copies of the expansion and one spot where
you can meet some of the developers.
This page
lists locations in Europe that will be selling the game as of midnight. Of
course this is less exciting for those who have managed to find retailers that
have broken
the game's street date, but what can you do. Meanwhile, if this is all
already old hat for you,
Blizzplanet is ready to move along, offering what they know about plans for
a second expansion to follow this one. They have an unofficial confirmation from
Blizzard of their goal of releasing expanded content annually, and they play
detective in piecing together some theories about the nature of a second WoW
expansion.

- Totally Games
The
Totally Games Q&A with Larry Holland on GamingExcellence discusses this
developer's past and future: "One of our company’s greatest strengths has
always been its ability to laser focus on the quintessential elements of a
property, be it Star Wars, Star Trek or even Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story
and successfully deliver those elements as the core experience of our
products. I think with Star Trek the challenge was greater but in the end we
really honed our abilities to make this kind of game. It was a testimony to
the fact that the entire development team clearly understood that we wanted
to combine the captain’s chair command and control responsibilities depicted
in the show with the heavyweight boxing style dynamics of large starship
combat so associated with Star Trek. I think we were successful in doing so.
From a technology standpoint we learned a lot as well. We made a very open
system that relied on the Python scripting language that continues to offer
great extensibility to modders who are still utilizing it to create
expansions. Though, it wasn’t an easy task at all to build a system like
that."
- Two Worlds
The
Two
Worlds Q&A on RPG Watch is part one of a conversation with Reality Pump
about their upcoming action/RPG: "Two Worlds is a realtime RPG vastly rich
in variety. You take the role of a bold adventurer who gets into the thick
of the power struggle between long-forgotten gods, exploring a huge world,
surviving countless battles and constantly striving to gain power through
clever tactics. Only power will allow you to decide the future of the world.
Two Worlds combines a dynamic and sophisticated battle system with an
enormous action theater and an astounding degree of 'freedom of decision'.
This gives you, the player, a wonderfully novel and absolutely top-class RPG
experience - and that was our project objective from the start. The game
even enables you to design its unbelievably huge and detailed world to your
own specifications."
Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day!
Sorry about the failure to update yesterday. When I ambled in to check on things
it turned out we had another mail outage, which was a bit more catastrophic than
the previous recent glitch. A couple of years back we had a mail issue here and
Frans and Kapi at 3D Gamers kindly set up our mail on one of their servers. This
was a bit of a makeshift situation, and it's not surprising it came to a
semi-disastrous end. The good news is that I was able to locate a proper host
for our mail services that should be less prone to outages and such issues, and
have everything changed over already. There was a DNS change involved in this
that may make the site inaccessible for a bit (though this has taken place for
me, and probably for most of you already), which may also result in some mail
sent here to be delayed, and it seems likely that mail sent here between
Saturday night and last night may be lost forever. But beyond that, hopefully
the transition will be fairly smooth, and I am confident that our email is set
up to be far more reliable than it was before.
R.I.P.:
Alice Coltrane, RIP 1937-2007.
