New Shadowgrounds Tease

All the doors on the Shadowgrounds Christmas Calendar are unlocked, and under Door 24 is a teaser video for an upcoming new Shadowgrounds game that will be officially announced by FrozenByte in January and released in Q2 2007. The clip offers a look at an encounter between a futuristic soldier and a cyborg enemy, and we understand a longer version of this teaser is coming in January/February. Meanwhile, Door 25 offers a new Shadowgrounds Xmas miniwar 2006 web game.

Arena Wars Reloaded

The exDream entertainment Website (thanks Frans) offers first word on Arena Wars Reloaded, an updated edition of their RTS game using an all-new graphics engine. Here's what they are revealing at this time:

I got many ICQ requests and some mails asking what this new Arena Wars Reloaded game is about. I guess many people saw the news entry on gamestar.de.

Yes, we are developing a new Arena Wars game and it is called Arena Wars Reloaded. It features a new graphic engine and many new cool features, which will be announced soon. It will be completed in March 2007 and it will come out (hopefully worldwide) in May 2007. Not much I can say else right now, we are still working on several other projects and we will announce them too when the time is ready :) Stay tuned.

AoE3: The WarChiefs Patch Plans

Ensemble Studios' Age of Empires III Home (thanks Frans) has word on the coming version 1.02 patch for The WarChiefs, the AoE3 expansion, which is basically also the change list for the coming version 1.10 patch for the base Age of Empires III game. Client fixes. balance changes, and network/ESO fixes are on tap for the patches, which are said to be coming in January.

Sunday Q&As

  • Marc Laidlaw
The Marc Laidlaw Q&A on Computer and Video Games catches up with the Valve writer to discus the story in the Half-Life series: "Are you doing the right thing or the wrong thing? We really like messing around with the implications of telling you that you're doing one thing, when actually, everything else is forcing you to do something different from that. There's irony in the game - everybody tells you that you're a scientist, but all you're actually doing is running around shooting stuff. All these things fall into the bucket of Gordon Freeman..."
  • Warren Spector
The State of play Q&A with Warren Spector on Computer and Video Games talks with the designer about, well, the state of play: "Well, I'm kind of a Johnny-one-note when it comes to game design - I'm all about giving players control over the experience. The sooner we get rid of games that are movie-inspired instead of pushing the unique qualities of OUR medium... the sooner we move from puzzle-oriented design to problem-oriented/open-ended-solution design... the sooner we stop making linear rollercoaster rides and start making games that give players freedom to act and to experience the consequences of their choices... the more we move in those directions, the better, as far as I'm concerned. The nice thing is, it seems like the market's agreeing with me. Finally!"

Out of the Blue

Well, we did get together with my bro and co. in yesterday's celebration, sadly this was because the news was bad enough on their kitty that she had to be put down. She was, however, pushing 18 years old, and had been very healthy through her life, so we just tried to reflect on what a good run she had. Aside from that somber note, our gathering was especially pleasant, and our other get-together for the holidays is slated for tomorrow, so we have a quiet evening at home planned for tonight.

I did see a pair of weaving, presumably intoxicated, drivers on the road, however, which serves as a reminder to be extra careful sharing the road on the holidays, not to mention to be responsible with your own carousing if you are the designated driver.
