Valve announces plans to distribute a commercial version of Garry's mod for the
Source engine via the Steam service: November 27, 2006 - Independent
Software developer Garry Newman and Valve today announce an electronic
distribution agreement for Garry's MOD, the popular software utility downloaded
by hundreds of thousands to create mini-games, many of the most popular movie
shorts on web sites such as YouTube.com, and more.
"The new version has been created from scratch so almost everything has been
revised and re-invented," said Garry Newman, creator of Garry's MOD. "It has a
bunch of new tools to play with (winches, hydraulics and hoverballs), totally
new spawn menu and a few new Post Processing effects to play with. The great
thing about Steam is that I can update really regularly, really easily - which
is something I plan on doing - so expect more tools/gamemodes/stuff to come."
The first commercial release of Garry's MOD will be made available on November
29, 2006. Since a Source-based product is required to run Garry's MOD, Valve
will be offering a special bundle of Garry's MOD plus Counter-Strike: Source for
just $24.95. For those who already own a Source-based game, Garry's MOD will be
sold separately for just $9.95.

- Heroes of Annihilated Empires
Computer
Games Online's Heroes of Annihilated Empires Q&A is a conversation with
Oleg Yavorsky of GSC Game World about their RTS/RPG: "We differentiate
between story quests (obligatory) and side (non-obligatory) ones, both of
which are plentiful in the game. The campaign provides for an average of
25-30 hours of gameplay. A typical story-based quest would be ‘go and
cleanse undead encamping at this area and turning all the nearby areas to
cemeteries’. The story-based missions are, naturally, more complex and
require a lot of player’s efforts. Side quests examples would be ‘save a
magical laboratory from the attacking goblins’ or ‘rescue my wife kidnapped
by orcs’ – these are the types of missions that you pick up on the way and
which are an opportunity to earn some extra reward."
- Elveon
RPG
Vault's Elveon Q&A - Part 2 continues to discuss this fantasy movie
tie-in: "Elveon focuses on its action gameplay, and so it is very important
to present a very attractive combat system, which is the core of the game.
We have hired our own martial arts crew, and they have developed a very
unique "elvish" fighting style that represents the honourable and powerful
skills of these characters. It's basically a mixture of medieval and modern
European and Asian fight techniques. The action gameplay of Elveon focuses
mainly on thrilling and well balanced duels with equal Elvish or divine
opponents, but there will be several other gameplay modes such as fights
with multiple opponents, ranged combats and stealth (often combined with
ranged combat) as well as exploration and puzzle solving sequences."
- Tomb Raider: Legend
The
Tomb
Raider: Legend Q&A on Computer and Video Games talks with Matthew
Guzenda and Riley Cooper of Crystal Dynamics about the most recent Lara
Croft game: "We set this as a goal really early on - although at first our
efforts didn't quite fit in and it was hard to see whether people were
actually going to understand what to do with it. But after a while, we
managed to do some things that we thought were pretty cool. Flipping the
block in the air by jumping on the other side of the see-saw was the most
enjoyable thing to design, and the most fun to watch people play. We got all
giddy when we watched it - it was great! The main thing we would have done
if we'd had more time would have been more physics set-ups, but we were
happy with what we did in what was new territory for all of us."
- S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl
Falling
Out on GamesIndustry.biz is an article-format Q&A about S.T.A.L.K.E.R.:
Shadow of Chernobyl with GSC Game World's Anton Bolshakov, but this just
seems to be a rehash of a recent Q&A on sister publication
Eurogamer
(story).
Well it was a lengthy vet visit, both a long drive and a long wait, all the more
vexing because I forgot something I need for Hudson, so I'll need to make the
round-trip again this week. The Gunnar-man definitely has an eye infection, so I
have goops to apply to his eyes, but we won't know until tests results come back
tomorrow if he also has a bladder infection. The bladder tests were facilitated
by collecting a urine sample, which was kind of comical: we headed out with a
Vet Tech, and when she tried to sneak in behind him when he hiked his leg he'd
stop and look at her like she was crazy. I finally took over collection duties,
and leveraged his greater trust in me into a nice pan of piddle. Hopefully this
and the various other tests turnout negative, as multiple infections raise
concerns over something more systemic, but we're pretty sure none of this is too
serious, as, besides his current couple of symptoms, all his other vital signs
are as strong as ever.
- Dark & Light
The
Dark & Light Q&A on Ten Ton Hammer talks with Géraldine Lescs of Farlan
Entertainment about this MMORPG: "First, the payers who enter the world of
Ganareth do not access to the whole world but only Dark, Light, Al Drifa,
Ysatis and Agnar kingdoms, which surface is not as large as the whole world
of Ganareth. Second, we always claimed that Dark and Light was offering real
freedom. This is why we decided not to force our players to quest all the
time but incite them to explore, meet other players, create guilds, build
their own world; not only questing. We didn't reach all our objectives as,
due to the size of the world anyway, players needed to be handled at the
beginning. This is why we implemented new quests and we reworked the
starting zones in order to help players to evolve faster and easer through
the world of Ganareth. Very soon, all the players who will enter Dark and
Light will be welcomed in a unique starting zone, all players of an
alignment being gathered in the same zone."
- Crysis
HEXUS.tv's
interview with Sebastian Spatzek offers a video interview on Crysis,
Crytek's upcoming first-person shooter.
I'm worried there's something wrong with the Gunnar-man, he woke up yesterday
with what appear to be infections in both eyes, though these look better after a
single application for some ointment from a previous attack of conjunctivitis.
He's also been wetting in the house: Saturday night he had an accident, and he
had not one, but two last night. I'm not sure if the two conditions are related,
but we'll get him into the vet ASAP to see what is going on.
