Evening Q&As

  • Half-Life 2: Episode Two
The Half-Life 2: Episode Two Q&A on FiringSquad talks with Valve's Doug Lombardi about the next episode in the episodic follow-up to their shooter sequel: "Episode One served as the bridge between Half-Life 2 and this trilogy of new episodes. Picking up exactly where HL2 left off, we needed to spend a bit more time in City 17 to resolve a few things, while extending the AI and other technologies to enable the single player coop experience between you and Alyx. In Episode Two, the Gordon has left City 17 and will spend the rest of this trilogy exploring new locations and interacting with new characters and items."
  • Anarchy Online
The Anarchy Online Q&A on MMORPG.COM talks with Funcom Community Manager Craig Morrison about their MMORPG: "The advertising system is always evolving; we have already introduced video and interactive advertising to Anarchy Online since we began our partnership with massive Inc last year. The optional nature of the system for paying subscribers and the flow of free players into the game means that the advertising works towards maintaining the game in a way that just wouldn't be possible otherwise. We are always careful with the advertising implementations, and are always working to ensure that they appear as an integrated part of the game world and aren't intrusive to players."
  • Voyage Century
RPG Vault's Voyage Century Q&A - Part 1 talks with Daniel Lin about this free MMORPG: "Voyage Century is a 3D nautical MMORPG. It aims to present various play paths such as free exploration, the creation of wealth, and the pursuit of dreams. The concept existed before we began operating the game, and during the time we were developing the North American, we thought about it over and over again. Finally, we confirm the concept was right. So naturally, Voyage Century is built on this concept; for example, blurring of the character professions, and skills being leveled by proficiency. All these are guided by freedom, and the game's emulation of vast geography and various culture sources is designed to promote exploration."
  • Killer Women
Killer Women: Bekah Hamilton on Killer Betties is a Q&A getting acquainted with this Perpetual Entertainment associate producer.

Gold - Forge of Freedom

Matrix Games announces that development is complete on Forge of Freedom, and this game set during the American Civil War should be available soon:

The American Civil War strategy game is completed and will be available soon Matrix Games and Western Civilization Software (www.west-civ.com) are pleased to announce that Forge of Freedom has reached gold status and will be available soon. Based on the robust and versatile Crown of Glory engine, Forge of Freedom allows players to refight the American Civil War from either side in this grand strategy wargame. By combining area movement on the grand scale with optional hex based tactical battles when they occur, Forge of Freedom provides something for every strategy gamer. However, Forge of Freedom is not limited solely to military action, you can also control economic policy with governors and use diplomatic tact to win the support of foreign nations during what was to be the bloodiest battle in US history.

The diplomatic and economic systems have been streamlined and improved since Crown of Glory to be more user-friendly and also suited to the period. Rather than multiple minor nations, each state has its own Governor and they will make demands on you and shift their attitudes according to events. In addition, you will have to manage diplomacy with the European powers to try to sway them towards or against intervention. Over 1,000 historical generals are included along with an option to know their abilities ahead of time or have to find out the hard way, as happened historically. Railroads, rivers and cities all play important roles, as do elections which occur at both state and national levels. Every effort has been made to bring you as thorough a simulation of the American Civil War as is possible, from 1860 to 1865, from the skirmishes and raids in the West to the pitched battles in the East and the Naval blockade.

Forge of Freedom will provide both experienced Crown of Glory players and newcomers alike adequate challenges without the hassle of a complicated interface or steep learning curve. Thanks to Forge of Freedom's turn-based design, the game moves at whatever pace the player decides. The new engine and methods used for diplomatic, economic and social strategies make running a country fast and easy. While your armies march across a regional movement map, battles will allow you to play at a smaller scale as we saw in Crown of Glory. In the detailed battlefield map, each side is trying to capture and achieve objectives, making forts and defensive outposts more critical and important.

For more information and the latest news on Forge of Freedom check the Matrix Games page at www.matrixgames.com and the Forge of Freedom forums. Forge of Freedom is slated for release late November early December.

Morning Q&As

  • Hellgate London
Hellgate London Q&A on GameSpot talks with Flagship Studios' Bill Roper about their upcoming action/RPG. focusing on the Hunter faction: "The hunter faction is designed to appeal to the first-person shooter-style player--someone that wants to be fully immersed in the world and battle demons with high-tech weaponry and gadgets. While the templars focus mainly on melee combat and holy rituals and the cabalists use the powers of the demons against them through magical rites, the hunters use bleeding-edge tech to fight for mankind's freedom. The hunter faction appeals to FPS players in several ways. First and foremost, since they primarily use all ranged weapons, they are best played in first-person mode. Secondly, player skill is a factor as we eliminate the autolock and soft-targeting features that the templar and cabalist use. Hellgate: London is a role-playing game, however, so level, skills, and equipment do matter. The player who chooses a hunter, however, will gain benefits from having a degree of personal FPS skills."
  • The Rise Of The Witch-king
There's a The Battle For Middle Earth II: The Rise Of The Witch-king Q&A on FiringSquad satisfies their quest for more info about the coming The Lord of the Rings RTS expansion by interrogating producer Amir Rahimi: "Another great unit in the Angmar faction is the Sorcerer. The Sorcerer may be the coolest unit in the BFME series. He is a spell caster that strides the battlefield followed by group of acolytes. These acolytes serve as protection for the Sorcerer, but they also serve a darker purpose. The Sorcerer actually harvests the souls of his acolytes in order to gain the power to cast his spells. The more powerful a spell that the player wants his Sorcerer to cast, the more acolytes he must consume in order to do so."
  • Voyage Century
IGG’s Daniel Lin talks about the 16th-century MMO, Voyage Century on GameZone discusses the free-to-play MMORPG: "Most pirate-based games focus on limited medieval events, countries and culture. But Voyage Century covers an all-world map and almost famous events in 15-16 century. Also, Voyage Century includes not just pirating and fighting, but also adventure and (playing the role of) merchant over the world. It's a quite simple name, isn't it? Voyage is our theme through the whole game and we put the story background in 15-16 century."
