Triton Closes - Prey for a Solution

The 3D Realms Forums (thanks Voodoo Extreme) offer the news that the Triton digital distribution service is shutting down (or has already done so, as their site is 404 "not found" as of this writing). The service was responsible for the digital distribution and management of Prey, and without it running, download copies of the game cannot authorize and launch. Until things are cleared up further, even 3D Realms is unclear as to what this all means. Here's the post by web-guru Joe Siegler:

After checking into it, we have been informed that the Triton service is shutting down - we should have some information about this situation shortly.

I don't have any further information about how things will all play with with keys, reg codes, Triton, logging in, or anything else at this time.

I'm looking into it - I swear, as soon as I have some more info on all this, I will let you know.

BF2142 Demo Server

A new Battlefield 2142 demo dedicated server is now available, corresponding to the recently released multiplayer demo for EA/DICE's military shooter sequel. The server offers everything needed for a standalone demo server. The download can be found on the EA FTP server (direct link), mirrored on 3D Gamers, FileFront, Gamer's Hell, and Worthplaying.

Sunday Q&As

  • Armed Assault
The Armed Assault Q&A on Computer and Video Games talks with Bohemia Interactive Studios' Paul R. Statham about their coming military shooter: "The storyline of Armed Assault is focussed on the island of Sahrani, which is split between a Communist dictatorship in the North of the island and a democratic Republic in the South. The premise is that with the South being US friendly and oil-rich there is a small contingent of American troops on the island to help train the Southern Sahrani forces in the spirit of friendship and cooperation. North Sahrani and South Sahrani have had a number of conflicts over the years and even in modern times the peace is a very brittle one - as the training comes to an end and the US troops have almost all left the Northern Sahrani government chooses to invade which leaves a small pocket of American soldiers left with no choice but to fight alongside the forces of the South."
  • Steve Ince
Not So Nutso - Interview with Steve Ince on Quandary is a Q&A with the indie developer/cartoonist about his work, including the upcoming Juniper Crescent - The Sapphire Claw: "The biggest step is getting people interested in your game. I have a number of game designs at different stages, but getting publishers interested is nigh on impossible. One difference is that I was always having to make sure that any ideas fit someone else's vision. When I work on my own stuff I know the vision much more thoroughly and the characters and situations are my own to develop as I see fit. Having said that, I'm currently working on the story and design for an adventure game which is being developed by another company. Their vision and the way they work really gells [sic] with my own thoughts and working processes and it's going very well."

Out of the Blue

Congrats to the Mets on sweeping the Dodgers. Revenge is said to be a dish best served cold, and I think it's safe to say the burn from losing in the '88 playoffs was pretty darned cool by now. Not so cool was the Yankees loss, not because I have that much sympathy for the bombers, but the older munchkin is completely obsessed with them and baseball, so the elimination at the hands of the Tigers resulted in many tears. I tried explaining that there is no crying in baseball, but that didn't work so well for Tom Hanks, and it didn't work so well for me either.
