Caesar IV Patch

The first patch for Caesar IV is now available, updating the just-released English edition of the historical city construction game to version 1.1. Word is: "Patch 1.1 is only necessary for English (North America, UK) versions of the game sold in the retail box. Non-English and digital download versions of the game do not need this patch. The patch fixes an issue with the Caesar IV Online feature." Thanks Frans.

RF Online Update

Codemasters announces a content release for RF Online, saying this final "Giga" expansion for their science fiction MMORPG paves the way for the release of Episode 2 early next year:

Los Angeles (September 26, 2006) – Codemasters Online Gaming has today released the second major content expansion for RF Online, the epic sci-fi and fantasy MMORPG. The second Giga update is now available, free of charge, across all servers and will take RF Online to Giga 4.2.

Now more action packed than ever, RF Online will automatically patch in the new content giving players access to the previously uncharted player area Elan Plateau where players can pit their wits against all new monsters and quests.

Also part of the update is Circle Zone Scramble, a unique Guild versus Guild combat system that pits guilds battling to the death using an original point system set of sporting rules in a revolutionary new environment.

Evening Q&As

  • Sid Meier's Railroads!
Shacknews' Sid Meier's Railroads! Q&A talks with Firaxis' Dan Magaha about the coming transportation simulation: "There's a definite connection – Sid created the Tycoon genre nearly 20 years ago with the original Railroad Tycoon, and this new game is really Sid returning to that classic and refocusing the franchise on all the things that people loved about the original, but taking advantage of the things that couldn't be done 20 years ago. The name change was a very deliberate move on our part. We felt that the 'Tycoon' genre had really sort of lost its way and that consumers now tend to associate very different feelings and emotions with the word 'Tycoon' now than they did 10 or 15 years ago. We also thought it was a great way to crystallize our focus for this game, which is all about the trains!"
  • Made Man
The Made Man Q&A on Computer and Video Games talks with writer David Fisher about his role as consultant on the upcoming Mafia-themed shooter: "There's an old saying, if you have to choose between the truth and the myth, write about the myth. And The Godfather created the myth of the Mafia, but it became the truth. So if you're not true to that myth - even if you're true to reality - people won't accept it. A lot of things made it all more glamorous than it is, but Goodfellas and The Sopranos removed the romance. You have to work, you can't make mistakes, you have to take orders and listen to people who you may not like. We try to fit within that for the game."
  • Pacific Storm
Computer Games Online's Pacific Storm Q&A Part 2 continues their conversation (posting a ten question Q&A all at once could break the internet) with Buka producer Aleksey Pshekhonov about Lesta's World War II action/strategy hybrid: "I think my favorite feature is the scale of the game. In Pacific Storm you can become the Commander-in-Chief responsible for the lives of thousands of servicemen and the destiny of his country; or the commanding officer of a small squadron; or even an ordinary military pilot fighting in the sky over the Pacific. We really want to impress upon the player the depth of the game, and the scale of the war in the Pacific, along with making it fun by allowing players to jump into the cockpit and fly fighters and other aircraft."
  • Space Cowboy
The Space Cowboy Q&A on MMORPG.COM talks with Jason Park about Masangsoft's upcoming MMORPG: "In my own words, I’d describe Space Cowboy as… a Free 3D action based MMO Space Shooter. There are 2 factions that players can choose from after attaining level 11 and the faction/nation chosen determines future missions and location as well as community. The game consists of heavy skill based PvP combat where players can show their skills and out-manoeuvre their opponents in dogfights or participate in full scale wars."

Into the Black

I noticed a nasty scrape along the side of our car today. I was very obvious from the angle I was viewing at that time, but well hidden from where it's usually parked, so there's no way of knowing exactly when this happened, but it must have been a parking lot incident that the culprit was unwilling to confess to. Grrrr.

ThreadSpace: Hyperbol Beta

Iocaine Studios announces ThreadSpace: Hyperbol, their upcoming tactical space combat game, has entered open beta testing:

YORBA LINDA, California – September 25th, 2006 – Iocaine Studios has announced today that their first commercial title, ThreadSpace: Hyperbol, is now accepting open beta signups. Gamers are invited to experience this unique and innovative game firsthand. ThreadSpace: Hyperbol offers intense combat with highly tactical gameplay in an online team environment.

“It took us a while, but we're finally ready to show the world how this game plays. Our closed beta testers really helped us to fine tune and polish several aspects of the game. They're really looking forward to open beta so more people can see how great this game is.” said Jason Fader, Iocaine's President and Lead Designer of ThreadSpace: Hyperbol. “Open beta will test the waters a bit for us. It will help us see how much the game can handle and how large of an interest gamers have in the game. We're just a team of 4 friends that left our jobs to do what we love, so it's a bit difficult for us to gauge those factors on our own without funding. We're hoping the open beta will show us what we need in order to have a successful launch.”

To participate in the open beta, sign up at http://Starport.Hyperbol.com. The test is currently not limited, but if things start breaking, signups are likely to be halted for a short time. Open beta will last for 3-4 weeks and participants will be able to experience all of the online features of ThreadSpace: Hyperbol. New gameplay videos, screenshots, and a section for the game's story have been added to the ThreadSpace: Hyperbol website (http://www.Hyperbol.com) to help show gamers what this game is about.

Star Trek Legacy Q&A

The Star Trek Legacy Q&A on FiringSquad talks with Dorothy Catherine 'DC' Fontana, a contributor to the Star Trek franchise since the beginning, about her role in the creation of Star Trek Legacy and Star Trek Tactical Assault, the upcoming Trekkie games: "Writing for a TV episode is very different. For one thing, an hour episodic script is only about 55 pages long. A game script can run 200-300 pages. That’s even longer than the longest single movie script -- to say nothing of the fact we were not limited to the characters in one series. We had to accommodate the major characters from five series. In addition, TV and film scripts tend to be linear, while game scripts offer choices, sidebar adventures, etc."

The Early Show

The Splinter Cell Website now offers a new trailer from Splinter Cell: Double Agent, highlighting the "difficult choice" to be faced by Sam Fisher now that he's a double agent. Thanks Frans. Also, a new Murder on the Orient Express movie offers a look at some logos and a bit under a minute from the upcoming adventure game based on the mystery novel. The clip can be found on 3D Gamers.

Out of the Blue

I get so much spam it's tough to imagine going without a spam filter, but I have had so many incidents recently where I found I was losing important mails in the filter. I guess I need to spend more time scanning my junk mail folder for worthwhile messages, but too much time on that sort of defeats the purpose of the filter.

Oops, forgot this yesterday. Happy birthday 2!
