USA (August 29, 2006) – Leading publisher and developer of critically acclaimed

“This title is an excellent addition to our portfolio and at $19.99 it’s

all downhill from there. The teaser site offers screenshots, saying the full

Fighting fire
with fire on GamesIndustry.biz is a Q&A with Introversion about the indie
developer's proactive approach to combating piracy of their games: "Our version,
which is modified, repackaged and distributed by our user community of around
1000 active participants, looks like the real game, but is in fact a demo. After
the third time of downloading the demo, the peer-to-peer user will be very, very
frustrated, and will do one of two things; give up or buy the game from us. We
subverted the Bit Torrent network for Darwinia very successfully this way, and
to a lesser extent eMule / eDonkey."
Luckily it's so overcast it's not really blue out there anymore. The early
update is to be able to make a family dinner. I'll catch up on late-breaking
news upon my return if necessary, it's hard to tell if all the dust has settled
from the Games Convention yet.
As promised ( story), the Call of Juarez multiplayer demo is now
available, offering the chance to strap on your six-shooters and sample the
multiplayer play in Techland's upcoming wild west first-person shooter. The demo
includes a skirmish map and a robbery map with support for two of the game's
four classes. The demo debuts on
3D Gamers and
FilePlanet (registration required). Mirrors are now also available on
Computer Games,
eXp Download,
FileFront.
FileNuts, Gamer's Hell,
VGPRO, and
Worthplaying.
There are some new
Reservoir Dogs screenshots on 3D Gamers offering more images from the game homage for the classic Tarantino film. These were accompanied by a fact
sheet revealing the game recently silently shipped in European territories,
which is borne out by the listings on
Amazon.co.uk and
Amazon.de. As for North America,
Amazon.com lists September 19 as the game's release date, though they
distressingly only have listings up for the Xbox and PS2 editions, and no
mention of the PC game.
3D Realms announces plans to release a patch for Prey tomorrow at Noon Eastern
time. The 3D
Realms Forums offer that news along with a change list for the patch,
saying: "This is a tech/bug fix patch, there are no new game play elements in
this update (nor are there any planned for the future). Please note that the
previously announced "new content" (maps, multiplayer skins) is not part of this
update, and will be made available at a later date."
The Might and Magic Website
says CLICK HERE TO
PARTICIPATE IN THE BETA, suggesting in all caps that the promised
( story) open beta for Dark Messiah of Might and Magic is
underway. Following that link, however, provides two revelations. One is that
the launch of the beta is delayed until Noon Eastern time tomorrow. The other is
that this is not actually an open beta: it is being conducted exclusively on
GameSpot, it
is only for their paid members, and even then it is not open, as they are only
admitting the first 5,000 applicants into the test. There is a timer counting
down to their rescheduled launch.
Assassin's Creed Targets
PC on IGN is a speculative article based on "leaked" information saying a PC
version of Assassin's Creed is going to be announced, perhaps as soon as this
week. The story below illustrates the iffy nature of rumors, but this info is
said to be from the coming print issue of PC Gamer UK, which has already
appeared in the mailboxes of some subscribers.
An update to the EA Eyes
Crytek Buy story in IGN defuses rumors that EA is looking to acquire German

is not negotiation the acquisition of Crytek."
Cheyenne Mountain
Entertainment announces they've licensed the Unreal Engine 3 for Stargate
Worlds as well as "future multi-platform games." Word is: MESA, Ariz.,
August 28, 2006 — Game developer Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment (CME), and Epic
Games today announced a license agreement in which CME will use Epic’s Unreal®
Engine 3 technology for the development of the upcoming, highly anticipated
Stargate Worlds and future multi-platform games.
Based on the popular science fiction television series “Stargate: SG-1” and
“Stargate Atlantis,” Stargate Worlds is a Massive Multiplayer Online
Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) which is scheduled to launch in late 2007.
...
“MGM is committed to finding ways to extend the Stargate franchise and this is a
logical step,” said Travis Rutherford, executive vice president, MGM Consumer
Products and Location Based Entertainment. “Stargate Worlds will be the premier
Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) developed by CME.
Combining Unreal Engine 3 technology with Big World’s™ client server technology
ensures an exceptional MMO experience for Stargate fans and gamers on a global

efforts, allowing the developer to create the most fantastic worlds, the best
characters and the most compelling game play possible.”

last projected for release this year ( story) as it says: "Battle
Begins February 2007."
- Penny Arcade Adventures
The
Penny Arcade Adventures Q&A on FiringSquad talks with Joel DeYoung of
Hothead Games about Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of
Darkness, though there aren't many details about the game itself: "At
Hothead, we think episodic delivery offers advantages for both the player
and the game developer. I should be clear that making episodic games does
not mean taking a larger game and simply chopping it up. You need an
overarching story arc for a whole series of episodes, while making each
individual episode compelling on its own. You need to create tension at the
end of an episode that makes the player want the next one, but you need to
not alienate players that start the game without having played previous
episodes. These are the types of things we think about when planning this
game for episodic release, and we look at it as both innovative and
exciting."
- Victoria Revolutions
The
Victoria Revolutions Q&A on Strategy Informer chats with Chris King
about the just-released historical strategy game expansion: "Gamer’s gate is
not country restricted; one of our goals with the portal is to make sure our
games are available anywhere at any time. Releasing it as a download only
has allowed us to release an expansion that was requested by the fans but
probably would not have had the mass appeal that we require from our games
that go onto retail shelves."
My telecommunications nightmare gets ever deeper. After being barely able to
work yesterday due to Internet flakiness, things were working fine this morning,
so Verizon showed up bright and early to knock me offline so they could fix
things ("briefly" which turns out to be nearly two hours). As always, the
individuals I deal with from there are friendly, competent, and sympathetic to
my plight, which makes it hard to stay mad over this. Of course, all the
problems we're having make it easy to stay mad over this, so it's a paradox.
There is a glimmer of hope here, however, as yesterday it finally occurred to me
to ask a neighbor if he suffered from this static on the lines in the rain. His
answer was no, which casts some doubt on how our problem is always blamed on
general issues with the phone lines in the neighborhood. So it's possible that
the problem is in our house, suggesting a solution will not have to wait for the
installation of new fiber optic cable down the road. We shall see.
