New Red Orchestra Content Next Week

Tripwire announces plans for a free content release for Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 a week from today adding a new map and more to the World War II shooter:

Tripwire is happy to announce our next free update for Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45, due out next Thursday, July 27th, to be downloaded automatically off Steam. This is the next in our planned series of free content updates for the game. A quick summary of the new content:

- Brand new map - "Lyes Krovy". This is a brutal close-quarters fight for a German trench-and-bunker position in a forest in northern Russia , in the summer of 1944. The Soviet forces get to assault into and through a strongly-fortified position, while the Germans fight hard to hold them off. This one has rapidly become a firm favourite with the test team!

- Brand new weapon system - smoke grenades. We've teased about this one on the forums... on some maps, infantry commanders will now have smoke instead of explosive grenades, which can be used to create quick cover for assault routes, or to momentarily blind the defenders. We're finding that clever use of smoke can change tactical stalemates at a stroke!

- Tank reloading: we've listened to the requests and we have changed the tank reloading so that you now choose the next round to load, without having to unload first. Quicker, more realistic, more intuitive.

- Victory conditions changed so round can no longer end in stalemate "No Decisive Victory" situations.

- Multiple fixes, including a fix from Creative Labs for choppy VOIP with EAX, no more players "bouncing" off prone players and no more "telefragging" when players change stance.

Evening Q&A

Starcraft Ghost Novel Q&A on FiringSquad talks with Keith R.A. DeCandido, author of an upcoming novel that's a prequel to the storyline in Starcraft: Ghost: "Well, like I said, it was originally designed as a prequel to the game. The game was going to be a first-person shooter, in which you-the-gamer play Nova, a Ghost -- basically a powerful telepathic and telekinetic assassin with excellent martial arts and weapons skills. What NOVA the novel does is tell the character's backstory and show how she got the point she's at in the game."

Into the Black

Bit of an early update this evening as I head off for a bit of family dinner, which will also give us the chance to follow-through on our promised birthday gift for the younger Smurf. I think he is going for the skateboarding action figure guys, rather than the light-up sneakers. Oddly he never mentioned disappointment at not being offered a plant as one of the options after all.

With more off-road racing styles to be revealed, Colin McRae: DIRT™ will also offer a dedicated mode for European, International and Global rally championships featuring official 2WD, 4WD, Classic and RWD rally cars.

Out of the Blue

The road crew showed up again yesterday and extended that hole across the street: rather than creating a bigger car trap, it turns out they are indeed working on the water main, extending the main across the street to an extra lot, presumably in case a house is built there. Then to compound the war-zone look, the folks showed up to follow-up on Con Ed's damage to our driveway, so now we have a hole there too, though that one is scheduled to be filled tomorrow. How badly chewed up is our street at this point? Yesterday there were three kids on their motocross bicycles riding up and down the block jumping the various piles of dirt and debris.
