Epic's Mark Rein Intel is killing PC Gaming on Joystiq reflects the opinion
the Epic VP expressed to the Develop
Conference in Brighton that moves by Intel, in particular the promotion of
integrated graphics on the motherboard, are hurting PC gaming.
Epic VP: Intel
is killing PC gaming! Ars Not really is an article offering an alternate
opinion, which is probably not the last editorial that will be written on this
topic. During his keynote address Rein also had
an episode about episodic gaming, calling it "a broken business." According
to the report, Rein's remarks met with some heckling from the audience, accusing
him of being a "dinosaur" and "self-serving."

- CivCity: Rome
Games
Radar's CivCity: Rome Q&A talks with Simon Bradbury, lead designer on
the upcoming city builder: "Like most city-builders the game's main element
is building placement; what, where and when you place buildings is key to
your success. 99% of all buildings, therefore, are built immediately; it
would just be too slow a game if players had to wait. Wonders are the
exception here, they take large amounts of both stone and time to build,
although their subsequent benefits mean they are pretty much always worth
it!"
- Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar
The
Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar Q&A on FiringSquad talks with
Brad Wardell about the upcoming expansion: "The Drengin are just
misunderstood. If conquering and enslaving people is a sign of villainy well
then I don’t want to know what non-villainy is. In the Dark Avatar campaign,
you take on a faction of the Drengin Empire, the Koranth, which is bent on
not only enslaving the universe, but exterminating all of the races that
inhabit it — that desire to take it a step further puts the Koranth at odds
with the rest of the Drengin Empire."
- Drakensang: The Dark Eye
RPG
Vault's Drakensang: The Dark Eye Q&A talks with Radon Labs' Bernd
Beyreuther about the upcoming RPG revival: "The most telling description of
Drakensang - The Dark Eye might be something like Baldur's Gate in 3D, but
based on The Dark Eye, Germany's biggest RPG system. So, that means it is a
classic party-based RPG, without irritating button mashing, but featuring
tactical, pausable combat, a skill-based dynamic dialogue system, unique
characters and an epic story that plays a very big role. It is set against
the backdrop of this amazing fantasy world."
- Panzer Elite Action/First Battalion
Action,
Strategy, More Action: “First Battalion” Covers Its Bases; Shoots For
Exemplary Excitement on GameZone is a Q&A about First Battalion, the tank combat game better known as Panzer Elite Action: "You'll get to see all the
well-known places in WW2 except Africa. From French beaches to Berlin to
Stalingrad. All environments are based on real-world battles and places, but
we didn't model them exactly like they were in real life. Other games have
done that and we wanted to create something that was fresh and action
packed."
After a brief respite from the regularly scheduled thunderstorms here in the
greater New York City area, all Hell broke loose today. I've joked that we've
had Florida weather lately, but today's
Tornado just 10-or-so miles south of here was no joke. Auntie Em! Auntie Em!
It's a twister!!!
The new SitRep on the America's
Army Community Rally Point announces plans for America's Army: Overmatch, a
new version 2.7.0 of America's Army Special Forces, which, in spite of the
mundane version number, is described as the "biggest release ever" for the
freeware military shooter (thanks Frans). Planned for release later this summer,
the update, currently in beta testing, will add a new mode that allows
cooperative multiplayer play versus AI opponents and asymmetric combat with
mismatched numbers of opposing forces. The update goes into detail in describing
how the new AI will operate, and how their spawn points will not be magical:
We recognized the need for an AI that is unpredictable and gameplay that
warrants replay. Therefore we could not employ the usual trappings of magically
spawning enemies, triggered sequences or scripted events. All of our AI is
dynamic and emergent and will react to players based on situation and
circumstance. The first time you see a Commando sneaking up on a unwitting
player you'll be convinced this is something different.
Just a few examples of the various things you can expect: AI can spawn in random
locations, can be suppressed, will react to overwhelming fire, will react
aggressively to grenades, can engage with a variety of weapons (AK-47, AK74su,
VSS, Smoke/frag grenades, RPG and RPK) against U.S. vehicles/soldiers, set
random ambushes, call for mortar support and request reinforcements via
BTR-80.
