OGaming's NCSoft
Q&A talks with Jeremy Gaffney about NCsoft's presence in the North American
MMOG market: "Let’s face it - you can count the number of successful MMOs that
have come out in the last two years on one hand, so there I wouldn’t say there
is a great resurgence. What I would say is that there has been a winnowing of
the market so that there are fewer MMO publishers, but the games that are coming
out are at a higher quality. Making MMOs is an expensive and time consuming
venture, so it’s not a business for everyone. NCsoft now has four top-notch
games on the market, which represents a pretty high margin, so if there is any
resurgence it is being driven by NCsoft. With the worldwide success of games
like Lineage 2 and World of Warcraft, you’ll probably see a lot more people
coming into the space again – but doing these right and competing with the Big
Boys is very difficult – and expensive!"

We got another chunk of holiday shopping done today, and we're just about
completely done now. I could pretend I miss the adrenaline rush of last-minute
shopping, but I don't really... it is a relief to have this mostly taken care
of. I will miss the mall though (we didn't make it that far today)... Mmmmm Fat
Burger....

Games In 2005-2006 Q&A with Brian Sullivan kicks off a year-end series
looking back at the past year and ahead to the next one by talking with
Brian Sullivan of Iron Lore: "Elevation Partners’ investment that created
the BioWare, Pandemic partnership. It will be very interesting to see how
outside investment will change the game industry, especially with respect to
the funding of game development. This may make the game industry even more
like the Hollywood model."

phone. It gets me through meetings. I like simple, geometrical games.
Sometimes my bosses will tell me to turn it off, but I’ve gotten pretty good
at not listening."

Our little spate of holiday shopping yesterday was quite productive. We're
usually pretty set by this point in the season (thanks to MrsBlue... before
marriage I was an unrepentant December 23 shopper), but before yesterday we only
had managed to find a couple of gifts for the folks on our list. It will
probably take longer to find the few remaining items than it took to find the
bulk we've now amassed, but at least this does take some of the pressure off.
