Rag Doll Kung Fu Goes Steam

This Steam Update (thanks Frans) offers the promised announcement of another upcoming game to be distributed via the Steam network, revealing that Rag Doll Kung Fu will be published via the broadband service. Word is:
In Rag Doll Kung Fu you act as a puppeteer in a martial arts world, but that doesn't really describe what this game is about. With most games we would use this space to describe what its like to play, but in this case we don't think it's possible -- you'll just have to watch the gameplay trailer to understand. In short, it's all about Chi power.

Q3A GPL Nears - GPL Quake 1 Game

Shacknews has a tidbit up from the QuakeCon keynote address delivered today by id Software co-owner and Technology Director John Carmack, who says that the Quake III Arena engine will be freely released under the terms of the GPL "within a week." They also describe the hopes he expressed to see a commercial release under the GPL, and coincidentally we can report on the release of Silver Wings, a budget arcade space shooter using the Quake (1) engine. A demo is available, as is (following the terms of the GPL) the engine source code. Thanks Playfuls.com.

Into the Black

We are having a pretty intense thunder storm tonight. This is to be expected with such extremes of heat and humidity, but it doesn't seem to be cooling off... in fact any hotter and the rain would be coming down as steam. So much for relief.

Stargate - Perception Strikes Back

Aussie developer Perception (story) responds to the recent announcement JoWooD of the cancellation of development of Stargate-SG1: The Alliance, refuting the publisher's contention that this is Perception versus reality:
Sydney, Australia, 12th of August, 2005; Perception Pty Ltd would like to rectify certain statements that have been made to the press by JoWooD Productions. To be clear, Perception is the official licensee of MGM on Stargate SG-1: The Alliance. Any suggestion that JoWooD has rights to Stargate SG-1: The Alliance upon termination of the contract is incorrect and not based on commercial or legal fact.

Development on the game will continue uninterrupted at Perception’s Sydney studio. Perception is committed to giving fans the best gaming experience possible.

Ben Lenzo, CEO of Perception said, “We view it as unfortunate that JoWooD would elect to make such misleading and libelous comments to the media and the marketplace. Over the last 9 months, JoWooD has openly acknowledged being in breach of contract in a number of areas including many legal and confidentiality breaches as well as several financial defaults for work performed by Perception and accepted by JoWooD.”

Perception has tried to work with JoWooD to resolve these issues for months but to no avail. This resulted in several breach notices being served on JoWooD, giving them ample time to remedy. As these newest issues had not been resolved by the August 5th 2005, Perception gave notice that all outstanding issues would need to be resolved by Monday August 8th 2005, or Perception would terminate its contract with JoWooD.

“It’s disappointing to hear of this so called termination via the press on the basis of a “get in first” tactic. This further suggests that JoWooD do not understand the terms of the contract. We are not surprised by their behavior or lack of appreciation for the goodwill Perception has afforded JoWooD on many occasions,” said Lenzo

Perception has begun personal prosecution proceedings against both the CEO, Albert Seidl and the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of JoWooD, Andreas Rudas, for the libelous comments made in their press release and will use all legal remedies available to it for the substantial monies owed to it by JoWooD.

“Perception will not allow its name to be tarnished in such a manner and view such matters extremely seriously and will always protect the reputation of our staff, our products, licensing partners and the company.”

Perception will not discuss any further the outstanding issues with JoWooD in public as legal action is underway. We look forward to the release of Stargate SG-1: The Alliance.

Crash Test Dummies Announced

Schanz International Consultants and Italian developer Twelve Games announce development of Crash Test Dummies, an upcoming cross-platform action game. Here's a bit of the description, which seems to take some liberties with the term "non-violent":
"Crash Dummy vs. the evil D-Troit" is a funny, non-violent action game full of special effects. Players take the role of the unique and exciting character called "Crash Dummy" who tries to save the future of his best friend and all the other Dummies.

Thanks to Virtools engine and the Havok Physic Pack (real world physical interaction) you can fight with many different styles in an interactive environment against evil D-Troit´s prototypes dummies. Move cases, throw barrels, climb walls, swim and use weapons like the Liquid-Bazooka to freeze, glue or burn the bad dummies. In other words just have fun, fun and more fun with the character and the gameplay!

Site Seeing - New Digital Reality Game Tease

A new Skiracing 2006 Website is up as a Flash teaser for the upcoming game where it's all downhill from here, offering a new screenshot among the three images in the gallery. Also, The Digital Reality Website has re-launched, replacing the temporary site that previously held that spot (thanks Frans). The site includes product sections for a variety of their upcoming products, as indexed here. That index also reveals plans for another unannounced upcoming project:
Besides this three top category releases we started a project to develop a game which is not the usual RTS, one can expect from the Digital Reality. A small team is working hard to prove that we are capable to deliver top quality titles in other genres as well. Stay tuned because details are coming soon!

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Details

New Enemy Territory Quake Wars details revealed on GameSpot has a bit on Splash Damage's upcoming Quake game. The article describes a plot set prior to the events of Quake II, and goes a little further into id's new megatexture technology:
According to Wedgwood, the new technology will also let the development team assign different physical properties to different parts of the level, such as making certain surfaces made of asphalt (which will be noisier to walk upon but offer better traction for land vehicles) and others made of sand (which will be quieter to walk upon but will bog down those military jeeps). Apparently, since the game takes place on earth, prior the first invasion conflict that preceded the events in 1997's Quake II (in which players took on the role of a lone soldier to hunt down the invading Stroggs' leader), the game will take place in varied environments on the planet; not just the desert region shown in the E3 demo movie, but also possibly temperate and jungle zones.

Morning Q&As

  • Auto Assault
Auto Assault Hazard Mode & Skills Q&A on Boomtown transcribes an IRC session about the upcoming MMORPG with NetDevil's Ryan Seabury: "We wanted each archetype class to fulfill the same combat roles, but achieve them through mechanically different ways...for each race, the skills are flavored based on the culture of survival for that race to illustrate, using the healer classes. Human Engineers will employ beams and energy based repairing, since Human tech is highly based on light and shielding etc. Mutant Shaman will manipulate the Contamination to create phase-formed vegetation that replenishes nearby allies and Biomek Constructors deploy nanobot technology and automated mini-mechs and bots to help their friends. And of course, there are many other skills that each of those classes has beyond just repairs that are different from each other."
  • Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War: Winter Assault
Gamecloud's Warhammer 40,000: Dawn Of War: Winter Assault Q&A talks with Relic's Andrew Chambers about their upcoming RTS expansion: "The Imperial Guard are the brand new, fully playable race we are adding to the game in Winter Assault. They are really fun to play with because they present the player with a whole new gameplay experience that they can’t find in the existing Dawn of War races. They are a very defensive, very ranged focused race, which opens up a gamut of new and interesting strategies to explore and play with."
  • Gridwerx Australia
Bigluke.net's Gridwerx Australia Q&A talks with Peter Jarrett from this start-up developer about Gridwerx Genesis, their upcoming independent project: "We represent the underdog, the rebel. We embrace the future, to connect the real and the virtual - and exploring the challenges that humanity face in coming to terms with our evolving world. We've got a fantastic bunch of guys (check them out on our web site www.gridwerx.com.au) who are all working part time after hours when they aren't studying, or working on their day jobs to make this dream a reality. We all met for the first time on 30 January after I had interviewed 80+ people. We hit it off, and have come a long way in the last few short months."

Out of the Blue

I'm suffering from frequent Explorer crashes from an OCX related to Flash, which rises ever-higher on my list of least favorite net technologies based on the number of times it is misapplied (Flash games rule, Flash websites are so often noisy wastes of time). I've tried reinstalling Shockwave and clearing my cache, but this persists. If this eventually forces me to reinstall Windows on my work machine I'll be tempted to add Flash to the list of things of things like RealPlayer that I refuse to allow to install themselves, unfortunately that would leave me unable to check out the numerous Play Time links that make appropriate use of the technology.
