Atari reveals some details about how the PC edition of DRIV3R, due in March of
this year, will differ from the previously released console
versions: Following the massively successful console version, Driv3r for
the personal computer features an all new level exclusive to the PC release. The
level is set between 'Gators Yacht' and 'Trapped' and is called 'The Hit'. It
features an assassination attempt on Tanner and a tense, hot pursuit which makes
the most of Miami's waterfront location and the variety of vehicles it calls
for. The PC version will also see additions in other areas including for the
first time the full 12 minute long DRIV3R 'making of' movie.
The Sproing
Interactive Media Website (thanks Frans) has revised their description of
their upcoming motorcycle racing game that formerly was known as Torque: Savage
Roads. Presumably because the movie
Torque from which it drew its license hit theaters over a year ago, the game
is no longer a movie tie-in, and will now be titled Jacked. In spite of the
change, the description of the game remains exactly the same: "Choose a biker
and try to lead him to ultimate victory - win races any way you can! A selection
of hand-to-hand weapons will help you to beat those pesky upstart biker
gangs..."

Fed's Make Something Unreal Q&A talks with Epic's Steve Polge and Mark
Rein about the just-completed Make Something Unreal design competition:
"There have been a bunch of surprises. The quality of the mods continue to
blow me away. There are some real professional-strength efforts here. Two
other things that surprised me were (a) improvements that the teams made
from one phase to another and (b) the breadth of variety of the entries in
the contest. Not just in the big categories but also some truly ingenious
entries in all the smaller categories including character models and levels.
Even though we had intended for it to work out that way people went way
above and beyond what we had expected."
- EQ Expansion
HomeLAN
Fed's EverQuest: Dragons Of Norrath Q&A hunts down Sony Online producer
Robert Pfister to discuss their next MMORPG expansion: "Designing for
EverQuest (the live game, special events, expansions, etc.) is a continual
process. There really is no ‘stop-and-start’ to it. The Designers are always
thinking up new storylines, extensions of storylines, continuing storylines,
bringing back storylines, etc. Dragons are a huge part of the lore of
EverQuest and we haven’t seen a lot of new stories with them for a while.
Wanting to explore the histories of the dragons and the amazing art we can
create with the new graphics engine made everyone very excited about this
story."
- AOE3
The
Age of
Empires III Q&A on GameSpy talks with Greg Street about the coming
installment in Ensemble's RTS series: "Age of Empires III picks up where
Age of Empires II: Age of Kings left off, roughly during the period from
1500 to 1850. We wanted to barely get into the Industrial Age, but we also
wanted to keep our focus on European civilizations. In terms of combat,
experienced Age players will have the best of both worlds, with units like
pikemen, crossbowmen, and cavalry that will be familiar, plus a variety of
new and more powerful units like musketeers, cannons, and tall ships."
- Act of War
The
F! True Game Story - Act of War on FileFront is an article-format Q&A
with Henrick Strandberg, producer on Eugen Systems' upcoming military
strategy game (which just added
General Barry
McCaffrey, USA (RET) as a military adviser). Here's a bit: "Definitely
the love for all that is techno-thriller; whether it’s Tom Clancy, Robert
Ludlum, Clive Cussler, Robert Harris, Dan Brown or Jerry Bruckheimer… We’re
all huge fans of this genre, and felt there was a big gap in the RTS genre
for this type of atmosphere."
- Stronghold 2
The
Stronghold 2 Q&A on Boomtown besieges FireFly Studios lead designer
Simon Bradbury about their upcoming strategy sequel: "The medieval period is
very interesting to us and the end result is that we do a lot of research
for the game. How people in that time period farmed, what they ate, the
medicines they used, the types of armour and siege equipment employed and so
on. We try hard to incorporate as much historical accuracy as we can and
believe we have a lot of educational value for a non-educational game. With
that said, where the game play and historical realism conflict we choose the
game play every time. The first goal is to make the game fun, second is to
keep the game accurate and give the player a flavour of living in medieval
times."
- Gish
GamersInfo's
Chronic Logic Q&A talks with the folks behind Gish, the ball-of-tar
action game:, and life as an indie developer: " It's pretty difficult to get
much coverage by the "main stream" Press. Indie games have begun to get some
recognition by mainstream press, which has made it easier for us, but there
is still a long ways to go. I would think that some sites would want to set
themselves apart for every other site and cover more then [sic] just
Half-Life 2, but these sites are still few and far between. Maybe its
something we will see more of in the future. We look at any kind of press
coverage helping, but don't see any one type as the key to success."
- Ron Gilbert
The
F! True Gamer Story Ron Gilbert on FileFront is a Q&A/profile of the man
behind some beloved classic adventure games from LucasArts: "I
love making anything that people enjoy playing. I’ve never been the type of
person that could spend years working on a game; I’d rather make a lot of
small games and do small innovations in each one, rather than some big genre
redefining game that took five years to make."
- Music
The
Q&A with Chaos Theory composer Amon Tobin on GameSpot discusses the
soundtrack to the next installment in the adventures of stealthy Splinter
Cell agent Sam Fisher.
Version 3.0 of
CodeRED, the game based on the GPL Quake II engine, is now available. The
standalone version 3.0 includes 16 levels, three of them specifically for
capture the flag play, as well as new models, updated graphics technology, and a
built-in server browser.
I mentioned recently that I was experimenting with
removing refined sugar from my diet for a while, concerned that getting half of
one's daily calories from soda is not what keeps Jack LaLanne going at the age
of 90. Actually in looking up Jack on the
Wikipedia to check his
age, I see he was a self-described "sugarholic" up to the age of 15, so he can
be my inspiration here. Anyway, I am pleased to report that this has
(unsurprisingly) resulted in me having a good deal more energy, an enhanced
appetite for real food, and by all accounts, a generally more pleasant
personality. That last bit suggests that, while I was not going off on any
serious rampages, I may have been a bit of a non-stop Cornholio for over 20
years now! Are you threatening me?
