Dear Diaries

The Axis & Allies Designer Diary #2 on GameSpot is already online, as the imminent release of TimeGate Studios' WW2 strategy game inspires an accelerated release schedule to keep this series of journals timely. Today's installment discusses the effort that went into designing maps to capture the accurate feel of some of the most famous battles of World War II. Also, the Time of Defiance Wrap Report on RTS RPG Vault offers a postmortem on Time of Defiance, Nicely Crafted Entertainment's MMO RTS game, as Mark Ashton and Ben Simpson discuss what went right and wrong during development of the project.

Saturday Q&As

  • Pariah
Interview with a Pariah on IGN chats up James Schmalz of Digital Extremes to learn more about plans for Pariah, their upcoming first-person shooter: "Well, one definition of 'Pariah' is an outcast from society. That fits the theme of the game in a number of ways: The main character is a bit of a loner at a low point in his medical career. The female lead character has been a prisoner for a long time and many of the enemies are prisoners or escaped prisoners. So, Pariah is a word that fits nicely on a number of levels."
  • Painkiller
Migraine Headaches Getting You Down? Don’t Take Aspirin – Play "Painkiller Battle out of Hell" and Call Me in the Morning on GameZone is the stretch of a title of the Q&A with Adrian Chmielarz of people Can Fly about their first-person shooter expansion. Likewise, there's an edited chat log from the recent Painkiller: Battle out of Hell IRC Chat on Filefront.
  • Scrapland
The American McGee Presents Scrapland Q&A on IGN talks with Enric Alvarez and American McGee about Mercury Steam Entertainment's now-gold action game: "MSE was born two years ago. Initially it was formed with people from Rebel Act Studios. We had just released Blade of Darkness worldwide and a sequel for PS2 and an Xbox port were on the way. But Rebel Act closed its doors and we lost our jobs. A few of us remained together, determined to stay in business, and we made it. Six months later we founded MSE and began Scrapland development."
  • BloodRayne Movie
FilmForce's Uwe Boll Interview Part One talks with the gamesploitation (remember where that one was coined when it's all over the 'net soon) director about progress on the film adaptation of the BloodRayne games: "...Billy Zane played a part also. We got [Zane] one and a half week's ago, so this info [might not have] reached the fans so far. And then we got, as like a vampire crack house leader, we have Meatloaf. He's playing it like in the Rocky Horror Picture Show, a really cool scene with tons of prostitutes in a big crack house. It's a great scene."

Site Seeing

A new official Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords Website is online (thanks Frans) offering a home to the upcoming Star Wars RPG sequel. The site is divided into your choice of Dark and Light sections, though the use of Flash for both seems to indicate the Dark side has the upper hand here. Likewise, the official Pariah Website has re-launched, another Flash-y affair, dedicated to Digital Extremes' upcoming first-person shooter. The re-launched site offers nine new low resolution screenshots.

Out of the Blue

After years of discussion, we have decided to take the plunge and become a two-dog household. As I have mentioned in the past, we have to consider MrsBlue's allergies in this regard, which originally helped us settle on Hudson the wonder dog, our allergy-friendly (if not strictly hypoallergenic) Airedale Terrier. This has helped MrsBlue make the case for a breed she has long favored, the Standard Poodle. In addition to not further aggravating MrsBlue's allergies, this breed will also be a great match for us an many other ways... A large standard will be a bit taller than Hudson (helping him withstand the rigors of playing with the energizer bunny of high energy dogs), he should be as smart as she is (to help avoid becoming the household doormat), and he should be a bit generally mellower that Hudson (who is not the terror that some terriers can be, but she has been known to get a bit worked up at times).

Going through all this lead to the conclusion that we wanted a male Standard Poodle, hopefully black. It was about a day later that I ran into someone joining the morning pack that Hudson runs a local trail with who had a black standard poodle puppy. It turns out her breeder, whom she adores, only breeds black standards, and when we spoke, it turned out he had a litter on the way, and that all the females were spoken for, but he could promise us the largest male in the group (do you know that the opposite of bitch in canine parlance is dog? -- Creepy). Anyway, it's just all come together like it was meant to be, so we are heading up to visit the breeder today to see the expecting mom and the pending pups' sire, and if all goes well, we should be bringing home our new friend during Christmas week!
