Lords of EverQuest Demo

There's a Lords of EverQuest Demo on GameSpot offering a sampling of SOE's upcoming EQ RTS game. Here's the word on the one-map demo: "The 372MB demo lets players try out the evil Shadowrealm faction, one of three sides in the game, in multiplayer battles via the new SOEGames.net matchmaking service." The demo has been mirrored on 3D Gamers, Computer Games Online, FileShack (registration required), Happy Puppy (registration required) and Worthplaying. This is the first of three planned demo releases for the game, here's Sony's explanation of the plan:

Sony Online Entertainment Inc. (SOE), a worldwide leader in massively multiplayer online gaming, today announced that it will soon be releasing three separate playable demos for its forthcoming real-time strategy (RTS) game, Lords of EverQuest(TM). Each demo allows the player to sample the game's tutorial missions and play one of three factions via online multiplayer. Lords of EverQuest is expected to ship to U.S. and Canadian retail stores this Fall.

"Our aggressive demo program should give players a taste of the exciting gameplay Lords of EverQuest has to offer," said Michael Lustenberger, director of product marketing, Sony Online Entertainment. "GameSpot, NVIDIA and Computer Games Magazine give us the opportunity to reach a broad base of gamers across their respective outlets."

The first demo for the Shadow Realm faction will be available exclusively via download from GameSpot.com (http://www.gamespot.com) beginning on September 19. The second demo, featuring the Elddar Alliance, will be available initially via download from NVIDIA's NZone website (http://www.nvidia.com/nzone) on September 29, and at select retail partners including GameStop and Electronics Boutique beginning October 6. The final demo, for the game's still-unannounced third faction will be available exclusively on the demo disc off the November 2003 issue of Computer Games Magazine. As an added incentive for players to collect all three Lords of EverQuest demos, having all three demos installed unlocks a special bonus multiplayer map.

The patch is mirrored on 3D Gamers and Gamer's Hell.

Deer Hunter 2004 Demo

Although not yet linked from the Deer Hunter 2004 product page, a playable demo of this hunting action game by Southlogic Studios is now available for download from Atari's ftp server. The 120 MB download offers the Northern Kansas area and a selection of the full game's models and weapons. Mirrors are online at 3D Gamers, Computer Games Online, Gamer's Hell, and Worthplaying.

"Official" Worms 3 Demo(s)

On the heels of the release ("leak") of separate German and English demos for Worms 3, the "official" demo for Team17's squirmy strategy game sequel is now available on the Worms 3D Website, again in both English and German variants. The English and German demos are 67 MB and 58 MB download respectively, and the website has a growing list of mirrors where they can be found.

Temple of Elemental Evil Trial

This Kazaa Webpage, of all places, offers download of a trial version of Temple of Elemental Evil as a sample of the Greyhawk D&D RPG. The download is a massive 843 MB download, because it includes the full game. The free trial will only operate for six hours, after which players can opt to continue playing by paying the $49.95 purchase price. Indications are that a more traditional demo release for this game is also in the works.

Out of the Blue

With immeasurable sadness, our family had to let go of my mom yesterday. She died at 3:35 p.m., leaving a hole in my and many other lives that can never be filled.

Thanks to all of you who have expressed kind thoughts on the subject of her condition. She was a strong believer of the importance of community, and was quite familiar with her identity here as MamaBlue, and she would have considered the support so many have shown to be a fine example of the benefits of a communal spirit. Likewise, my own thoughts are with the many of you who have described your own families' struggles with illness -- you have my sympathies.

Finally, thanks to Frans for his help catching up on today's news. I'm sure there are many questioning the need for me to jump back into this so soon, but it's been a good distraction, and with a funeral this weekend I really wanted to clear my plate to keep the backlog of news from being stressful and to prevent it from getting any more overwhelming.
