Iron Storm Patches

This Iron Storm Patches Page now offers a new version 1.04 patch to update the North American edition of 4X Studios' alternate-history World War I game. Likewise, this Wanadoo Support Technique Page features the European version of the patch, a 6.7 MB download, as opposed to 7.8 MB for the North American version. Both patches are mirrored on 3D Gamers, where there's word that the update adds the ability to start a dedicated server, and optimizations for "multiplayer features like the ping, map cycling, etc." Another mirror can be found on Worthplaying.

Freelancer Demo

There's a new Freelancer Demo on FilePlanet (subscription required), offering a sample of Digital Anvil's upcoming space game exclusively for their paid subscribers. The 154 MB demo "contains the entire first system of the game: The Liberty System of Manhattan. It includes more than a dozen bases, five ships, and great taste of the open-ended nature of Freelancer." The demo's exclusivity is enforced by way of an activation key provided to FP subscribers during the download.

IGI 2 Dedicated Server & Euro Release

This Codemasters Downloads Page offers a new standalone server utility for IGI 2: Covert Strike that allows a dedicated server to be run without the original game CD or a CD key. The 74 MB download is mirrored on 3D Gamers, FileShack (registration required), Gamer's Hell, and Worthplaying. Also, there is a guide to the IGI 2 multiplayer maps on Covertstrike.net to help get a leg up in Innerloop's stealthy shooter sequel, which is scheduled to be available in Europe as of today, with the U.S. release slated for March 5.

Empires: Dawn of the Modern World Unveiled

Activision Presents the Next Era in Strategy Gaming With Empires: Dawn of the Modern World From Stainless Steel Studios is the press release revealing plans for the next RTS game from the designers of Empire Earth. There is no projected release date for the game at this time, but the release does have some info on what it will offer:

Activision, Inc. marks a new era in the historical strategy genre with the announcement of Empires: Dawn of the Modern World from acclaimed designer Rick Goodman and Stainless Steel Studios. A real-time strategy game of epic scope and breadth, Empires: Dawn of the Modern World lets players command legendary civilizations as they battle to forge mighty empires during the days of longbows and charging knights to the awesome land, air and sea battles of WWII involving Tiger Tanks, Storm Troopers, Spitfires, and stealthy submarines. Empires: Dawn of the Modern World has not yet been rated by the ESRB.

"Empires: Dawn of the Modern World spans more than 1000 years of history and offers players an unequaled mix of unique units, special abilities and epic combat," said Larry Goldberg, executive vice president of Activision Worldwide Studios. "Fighting by air, land and sea, players will have their strategic skills put to the test as they attempt to conquer enemy civilizations in one of the most realistic and deep gaming experiences of all time."

Prince of Qin Online Beta

The Prince of Qin Online Downloads Page is already offering downloads of a beta version of the recently-announced Prince of Qin Online, as stress testing of the upcoming MMORPG set in ancient China is beginning today. There is also a 1 MB version 0.922E patch for the 300 MB client, and word on testing of the game is that it will continue for two months.

Consolidation

X-Men Legends Unveiled on PS2.IGN.Com (thanks HomeLan Fed) unveils the previously secret console game in the works at Raven Software. X-Men Legends is a superhero RPG slated for release on the PS2, GameCube, and Xbox late this year. According to the story, the game's true unveiling will occur in the March issue of the print Game Informer magazine.

Deer Hunter 2003 Patch

A new version 1.23 patch for Deer Hunter 2003 is now available. The update changes and fixes a load of things with the game, as well as a couple of issues with the bundled version of the serious editor. The 19 MB patch is available here, and is mirrored on FileHell and Worthplaying.

Out of the Blue

It's a race in this area between the warmer weather wearing down the 5+ foot mounds of snow piled by the sides of the roads around here and the next impending storm. From the way things sound, this is all going to come together to create some serious ice conditions in these parts. It's starting to seem more and more obvious that the little rat groundhog that predicted another six weeks of winter on the 2nd was right on the money. If I get a hold of him to discuss this, I'll invite all of you for Groundhog steaks as soon as the grill appears from beneath the snow.
