Demo Mania

A demo version of Vietnam Medevac is now available, offering the chance to check out InterActive Vision's military chopper rescue game. The 81 MB file can be downloaded from the official website, 3D Gamers and Gamer's Hell. Also, the demo of Search and Rescue: Coastal Heroes, this game's civilian counterpart has appeared on Gigex. Finally, a 221 MB demo of RalliSport Challenge is now available, strapping you in the five-point restraint of a rally car driver. The demo is available from Microsoft Game Studios and Gamer's Hell.

Platoon Marches In

Platoon makes its PC premiere is the press release with word that Digital Reality's Vietnam War strategy game that bears the license of the movie of the same name has shipped to stores in North America. Here's a portion: "Platoon lets you follow the career of newlywed Martin Lionsdale of the 1st Airborne Cavalry Division, and take part in some of the most thrilling moments of the conflict, controlling an entire platoon through missions based on historical events. Platoon covers the Vietnam War from the early days of the conflict (late 1965) to the height of battle in 1968 and recreates some of the most tragic moments of the War: Operation 'Shiny Bayonet', the Pleiku Campaign and Operation 'Pershing'."

Wolfenstein Enemy Territory Q&A

There's a Wolfenstein Enemy Territory Q&A on GameSpy.com talking with id software's Kevin Cloud, Mad Doc Software's Ian Davis, and Splash Damage's Paul Wedgwood about the upcoming Enemy Territory follow-up to Return to Castle Wolfenstein, the Quake III-engine WW2 shooter. Topics include how things are shaping up, how this is an entirely new game rather than an add-on, the single-player storyline, new content, maps, joining campaigns in-progress, coordinating the multiple development teams involved in this project, engine enhancements, and more.

Renegade Linux Server Prerelease

Westwood's C&C Renegade Website now offers downloads of a new version of the Command & Conquer Renegade Linux "FDS," which our best guess is stands for 'full dedicated server.' This is actually a prerelease in anticipation of the next client patch for the C&C FPS, so rather than for operating an updated server at this point, the file is being offered to allow server administrators to test it out to make sure it runs properly.

James Bond 007: NightFire Ships

EA Deploys Highly Anticipated James Bond 007 NightFire is the press release announcing that the cross-platform James Bond game is now infiltrating stores, probably not a coincidence with the new Bond movie debuting in theaters this week. The versions currently shipping are the Xbox, PS2, and GameCube console releases, and word on the PC version is to expect it in stores on Monday, November 25. Here's the deal on the various versions: "Each of the platforms contains unique features catering to that platform's audience. For example, the console versions feature exclusive driving levels -- developed by the award winning team behind the Need For Speed racing games -- that feature an array of 007-inspired exotic vehicles, including the Aston Martin Vanquish(TM), equipped with weapons and gadgets. The PC game offers exclusive single player levels for extended excitement and robust multi-player support online."

Impossible Creatures Diary

The Impossible Creatures Development Diary on PC.IGN.Com features some thoughts from Drew Dunlop, lead technical programmer on Relic's upcoming game of diving headfirst into the gene pool. He discusses the working of the "Combiner engine," the technology that allows for the game's namesake mix-and-match critters, going into the requirements they had for the technology, why they did things the way they did, the flexibility required to make the graphics succeed, how they feel the engine turned out, and more.

Morning Q&As

Splinter Cell Clarification

Even as the Xbox version of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell is finding its way into stores, PC Perfect Splinter Cell? on PC.IGN.Com is a story with word that the graphics in the upcoming PC port of the game will be an exact recreation of those found in the Xbox version. This contradicts an earlier understanding that the PC graphics would be dumbed down to support lesser 3D accelerators, and word is that the game's graphical goodness will be supported on all "next-generation" video cards ("Radeon, GeForce, Parhelia, Xabre even").

Morning Previews

  • Highland Warriors
There's a Highland Warriors Preview on B-F Total Gaming Network with a look at Data Becker's upcoming RTS game set in the rugged hills of Scotland. They discuss the focus on combat and strategy, economics, experience, the interface, missions, competing in the crowded RTS market, and more.
  • Galactic Civilizations
The Galactic Civilizations Preview on Worthplaying discusses Stardock Software's upcoming space strategy remake. They describe the story, the perspective, ships, combat, trade, graphics, audio, AI, and more.

Enigma "Recruiting" Demo

What's being referred to as a "recruiting demo" for Enigma Rising Tide, Tesseraction Games' Naval MMORPG, is now available (thanks HomeLan Fed). The 82 MB file can be obtained from FileShack (registration required), FilePlanet (registration required), and Computer Games Online. Here's all it says about this on FilePlanet: "Here is the first recruiting demo that was released to promote the single-player portion of naval simulation title, Enigma: Rising Tide."

Mafia "European" Demo

The Mafia European Demo on Gamer's Hell is available for the price of a 210 MB download. There's no word on what is different in this version compared with the slightly larger U.S. version of the demo (story) of Illusion Softworks organized crime game (though fewer strip malls and a more liberal attitude towards sex come to mind as possibilities).

Ubi Soft sends word that Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell for the Xbox is now available in stores. Named "Game Boy Player," the new device attaches to the bottom of GameCube, enabling it to read Game Boy Advance cartridges. A Game Boy Advance is not needed."

Out of the Blue

Anyone around these parts who went out in the wee hours to see the meteor shower was disappointed, unless they regard a rain shower as an adequate substitute. That's okay, I'm pretty sure they'll have figured out how to overcome the climate in time for the next shower of such noteworthy intensity, which may be several hundred years off (though it may be as early as 2099). Of course I'll be a Futurama-style brain in a jar by that time at best, so I guess I'd better start regarding the rain shower as an adequate substitute, too....
