The answer to my question about Allhallowmas yesterday teaches me not to ask
what I think are rhetorical questions without a quick web search first... I was
so sure it was made up I hadn't even bothered. Turns out it's another word for
All Saint's Day, which is the day after Halloween.
I've mentioned in the past that our backyard is more-or-less dominated by a
pair of mimosa trees, which drop crap all over the place throughout the year.
What we did not know was that these trees were not long for this world... seems
there is something called 'mimosa blight' which is a ground-borne fungal
infection that attacks the mimosa through the roots, a problem that is
apparently common enough in the north as to be considered just about inevitable.
What had been two living mimosas (not counting the virtually infinite number of
saplings they continually produce) are now one completely dead one and another
that's more dead than alive. On the bright side, it's always a joyous occasion
when a city boy has an excuse to fire up a chain saw, but it's too bad about the
trees (in spite of their messy habits). I guess we need to find something to
plant in the empty spots that will both grow quickly and will not succumb to the
blight.
