Ever since I had the accident hitting a dog this past summer I can't even
estimate the number of times the unfortunate incident has almost repeated
itself, with the list of animals attempting (but thankfully failing) suicide by
jumping out in front of my car including wild turkeys (who seem to be as dumb as
the legends about them indicate), wild geese, cats, skunks, opossums, and of
course, the inevitable deer. Part of this could be attributed to driving in
nearby Harriman State Park, filled as it is with natural beauty and its
accompanying wildlife, but I was also beginning to think some other factor must
also be involved, considering how often it has been happening... perhaps that
the dog's scent had camouflaged my car's scent, or something similar was at root
for the sudden newfound popularity of the spot in front of where I was driving.
My most recent such moment of truth defies even that far-fetch reasoning though,
as it was a human (presumably, though you couldn't tell from his driving) who
chose to make his left turn across my lane of the highway directly in front of
me, rather than the more traditional (and prudent) method of waiting until after
I passed, resulting in my latest heart-pounding, tire-smoking stop. So now I
consider writing about this incident as a test of my latest theory on the
subject... if this starts happening still more often now, I will be forced to
conclude that these have all been desperate attempts to become the subject of an
Out of the Blue update.
