More on Renegade Demo Lag

Westwood has opened a page with tips for running the Command & Conquer Renegade demo, showing how to filter out non-dedicated servers, and emphasizing the amount of bandwidth required to run servers for various numbers of players. Adding to that, Jason "Liquid" Austgen sends along a tip for server administrators, suggesting to update the BandwidthUp variable in the game's server.ini file to 1.5 megabits per 16 players instead of the default 1 megabits (still adjusting the variable by ratio of the number of players that will be allowed). Last but not least, a post titled Update for 2/16/02 on the official forums (thanks dryhump) has word from Westwood's Dan Cermak on an imminent demo patch "that will autodetect whether you can host a game and also tell you the max number of people we recommend for your game. Each host will be required to be a dedicated server as well."

Q3A Master Server Maintenance

id Software's Graeme Devine updated his .plan with word of problems on the Quake III Master Server, and some temporary down time that it's causing:

The Quake 3 Master Server

Due to an ongoing flood attack on the authorize server the master server got super slow on responding. For a few weeks we've noticed that it was less than solid, but it wasn't until investigation that the cause was found. Apologies for this.

I'm working on the issue right now, so the master server may appear down today for a few hours starting right about now.

Graeme.

Out of the Blue

So I'm staring at this blank space waiting for something to write itself, and it occurs to me the reason nothing is happening here is that my brain has taken the day off, as it often does on weekends. This of course is a Catch-22 situation, as without the benefit of a brain it's difficult to figure out why you are failing to think properly.

Now I've got to figure out where that darn brain has gotten itself off to... I'm guessing it's just lazing around watching TV.
