impressions here, and the screenshots are the same as the ones posted elsewhere
today (see below).

Coinciding with the game officially reaching gold status ( story), Microsoft has released a new MechCommander 2 movie in low-res (716 KB) and high-res (2.2 MB) Windows Media Player sizes for download from FilePlanet (registration required). The trailer runs for a bit over a minute and offers both cutscene and in-game footage.
There is a new Halo movie on halo.bungie.org that offers a video preview from the coverdisk of German GameStar magazine showing off Bungie's 3D action game at E3. The movie appears to be ShakyCam but high quality footage and it sports more than three minutes of in-game action with German commentary. Beware that the download server is rather crowded already. Update: The movie has been temporarily removed until more mirrors are available, which have now sprung up here.
As promised, ION Storm and Eidos have released the version 1.01 patch for Anachronox for download from their ftp server. The 4.1 MB download brings a large number of gameplay changes, bug fixes, and other improvements as well as fixing Windows 2000 compatibility issues (although that OS remains unsupported). The ftp server is not very speedy, so here is a local copy with mirrors of the patch with the complete list of changes.

A message board post by one of the developers inadvertently announced this
late last week ( story) but Microsoft has officially
announced today that MechCommander 2 has gone gold. No date is mentioned
in the press release, but the date mentioned last week was July 19th, which
seems likely.
GameSpot has conducted an interview on Return to Castle Wolfenstein, cornering id Software producer Kevin Cloud about the first-person shooter sequel in development at Gray Matter Interactive. Kevin explains id's involvement with the game, provides an overview of the backstory, talks about the weapons, enemies, and levels, and the proverbial more. Two new screenshots are also included. Here is an excerpt:
GameSpot: So what's your favorite aspect of Return to Castle Wolfenstein?
Kevin Cloud: It's tough to pick one particular element as a favorite. All the game elements are coming together and working together so well that without any single one of them, the game would be lacking. There are so many small details like eavesdropping on conversations, enemies taking cover to reload, and enemy reinforcements coming in via trucks or parachutes that really make you feel like you are part of the game. Probably my favorite part of the game is the sense that the world is alive. The designers were able to put together a script that sets every piece of the world in motion when you enter the level. Enemies will patrol, stand guard, and fight zombies, and your actions and reactions to the world and events as they play out affect the way the remaining events occur. The speed at which you play, the tactics that you use, and the order in which you kill enemies all have a direct effect on the world. It's incredibly fun when you get a real sense of "true to life" randomness while playing a game, and that is really coming through in Wolfenstein.
UGO.com has posted a
new movie featuring footage from Westwood Studios' Earth and Beyond (thanks
EarthNBeyond.com). The movie features
over two and a half minutes of footage from the game (filmed off a computer screen) and is in streaming Windows Media Player
format.

Q&A with Christofer Sundberg of Paradox Entertainment, talking with
him about the upcoming RPG Valhalla Chronicles. The game is being developed
by Oblivion Entertainment and produced by Paradox, and Christofer provides some
background information on the game world and its major characters, and he also
says what will separate VC from the many other RPGs out there. Update: Four new screenshots are also available.
The folk at PC Gameplay were able to sit down with a build of Command &
Conquer: Renegade, and so they have posted a
preview of it on their news page. The preview is brief and the screenshots
are old, but it does contain their enthusiastic impressions of the game.
They seem to be running out of letters, but nonetheless version 0.99v1 of the
Orange Smoothie Productions mod for Quake III Arena has been released (thanks
Stomped). This latest release consists
largely of fixes to "broken stuff" in the last release.
A pair of posts to the official Starfleet Command message board provides some
tips for the just-released add-on/standalone game Orion Pirates. The

There's an interview with Dan
Cermak on TFH Gaming talking with the executive producer on Command &
Conquer: Renegade, the upcoming shooter that puts you in the role of a soldier
in a Command & Conquer battlefield (albeit without someone clicking with
their mouse to tell you where to move). The conversation covers topics like
Westwood's efforts to cross into new genres with the C&C universe, the goals
of the project, and loads of details about what to expect from gameplay.
The Adrenaline Vault
is reporting that Timeline Computer Entertainment, the interactive entertainment
company of author Michael Crichton, is shutting down, having released a single
title, their namesake game Timeline. No reason for the closing is cited, though
the difficult times many game developers have been facing lately would be an
obvious guess to hazard.
The Server Watch Plugins
page now offers a new plug-in that offers RUNE support in Server Watch,
based on their Unreal support. In addition to the plug-in, the full Server Watch
installer now includes the new plug-in when you download it.
Part one of GameSpy.com's
Tropico Strategy Guide is online, offering introductory tips for PopTop's

dedicated server guide on PlanetMoon Central for those looking to run a
Giants: Citizen Kabuto server. Finally, there is an
Italian translation of the Anarchy Online manual on Massive Multiplayer Online Gaming.
The Doom Center's Episode
One Competition will likely leave them knee deep in levels, as it calls for
user created levels in the style of Doom episode one, Knee Deep in the Dead. The
contest will be judged by E1 designer John Romero himself, and the winner will
receive a copy of the Ultimate Doom autographed by Romero.
- A report on EuroGamer
says that Crazy Taxi, of all things, is the next game project to head to the
silver screen, quoting the Hollywood Reporter as the source of the
tidbit...
So far I have managed to miss more episodes of Six Feet Under than I've
seen, but what I've seen of this offbeat show, it fits in well with HBO's other
high-quality original offerings (easily the best lineup of programming to be
found on TV these days). Anyway, last night's episode is another I managed to
miss, so a thank you to Monte Fisher, who points out that in it, Claire is
interrupted at her computer by her mother while playing Quake III Arena. Neat,
I'll have to be sure to catch one of the 20 repeat showings that will span the
multiple flavors of HBO this week.
