Archived News:
Rage has released another patch for Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising, updating the English edition of their 3D action/strategy game to version 1.03. New in the 3.9 MB patch are a fix for quick-save and quick-load problems, and a fix for the pause function. Thanks Patches Scrolls for the tip.
The official X-COM Enforcer site sports nine new screenshots of the third-person shooter nearing completion at MicroProse. The site is Flash only so a direct link is not possible, but pages 2 through 4 in the Screenshots section each offer three new images of the game in action.
In the Half-Life: Opposing Force releases some two weeks ago ( story), the German edition was not accommodated for, but that has now been remedied as Sierra Germany has released the German Opposing Force version 1.1.0.6 patch to bring Gearbox' mission pack in sync with the other editions. Thanks again Patches Scrolls.
Pivotal Games have launched their new website showcasing their upcoming 3D squad-based tactical action game based on the Gulf War of 1991, Conflict: Desert Storm (thanks SpecForce). The site offers a mix of new and familiar screenshots, new character and model renders, wallpapers, and a pair of brief development diaries (apparently written some time ago) describing progress on the game's creation.

Four new Earth and Beyond wallpapers are online at the official site, illustrating Westwood's massively multiplayer space epic (thanks BG:CNC for the reminder).

PC.IGN.com has posted a brief TRIBES 2 interview grilling Dynamix art director Craig Maitlen about their just-released team-based shooter. Not surprisingly, Craig talks about the graphics improvements over the original game, the challenges of creating the sprawling landscapes, and a few related topics. And elsewhere, Tribalwar has posted details on the new version 22017 patch (available only via the auto-updater), as well as a statement from producer Dave Georgeson on how they're dealing with the game's initial popularity.
It turns out that yesterday's story about possible problems with beta code in
some Black & White CDs ( story) was indeed inaccurate, loony
posted a follow-up earlier today, but I prefer to follow the edict that
follow-ups should have at least as much prominence as the stories they are
correcting, hence this story is basically redundant with the 'etc.' piece below.
Here is a bit of the apology posted on PlanetBlackAndWhite,
source of the original report: Just to rectify everything now, and in case
you missed what happened, we stated that the copies of the discs people had were
betas due to time constraints. This is bollocks.
I won't try to define
bollocks here, but they are confirming the report was false.
The weekly Halo update has surfaced at Battleground: Halo this morning (thanks halo.bungie.org), and as usual Matt Soell makes a virtual tour through the Bungie offices sharing tidbits on progress in the development of their 3D action title. Topics in this update include the AI, weapon improvements, a new artist, the "umbra" effect and, of course, more.
RPG Vault has conducted an in-depth interview on RedMoon, the Korean isometric MMORPG that recently reached US shores and is now undergoing beta-testing. JoyCity Entertainment's Kevin Hannah is on the stand to introduce the game, discuss its premise, design and features in detail, and touch upon various forms of player interaction that can happen in the game.
GameSpot Live has posted two
more clips of their video interview with Troika Games' Leonard Boyarsky,
who continues his demonstration of Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura.
Like the first part (which is still available), the videos are available in
a number of streaming formats or as downloadable MPEG files.
Press demos of Project Eden have been making the rounds, and so it's no surprise
that there are already two previews of the game online. Daily
Radar's preview contains their impressions of the single-level alpha along
with some new screenshots, and Game Revolution has a
brief preview up that contains their impressions of the demo.
A new
edition of their ongoing Battle Realms History is online at Daily Radar
this morning. This installment looks at Clan Lotus, and like all the other such
articles in this series it features a fictional backstory of the clan.
Proving it's never too early to start, Well-Rounded Entertainment has
opened their E3 2001 site. There are some minor stories of note here, such
as a confirmation that LucasArts will be announcing a new adventure game and
that Verant's PlanetSide will be playable at the show, but of course E3 isn't
until May, so don't get too excited just yet.
Fan page Coldwar Flashpoint has posted an
open letter they received from Bohemia Interactive's Ondrej and Marek Spanel
that addresses hacking, the creation of user-made add-ons and other issues with
the recently released Operation Flashpoint demo. They also take the opportunity
to explain how the full game differs from what is in the demo.
Version 0.94 of the Snow War
mod for Half-Life has been released (thanks The
Backburner). Snow War is an oddball snowball fighting mod, and this latest
release adds new sounds, new menus, seven new maps and more.
The official Star
Wars Galaxies FAQ has been updated with new questions regarding the skills
system, the possibility of additional content for the game being created after
the game is released (they will "most definitely" have both boxed
expansions and downloadable updates) and how difficult it will be to obtain
the best items. Also, the first part of the
Serious Sam walkthrough at The Gamer's Press is online.
The Tokyo Game Show is still underway and so there's naturally more stories
coming from across the ocean. PS2.IGN has a
look at Konami's Playstation 2 port of Age of Empires up, complete with
11 screenshots. Xbox.IGN has conducted an
interview with Charles Bellfield, the VP of marketing at Sega of America,
talking with him about the recent announcement that Sega is working on 11 new
games for the Xbox system. And finally, great news for Final Fantasy otaku,
lots of movies of Final Fantasy X are popping up online: Daily
Radar has five, while nine
more are up at PS2.IGN.
As confirmed yesterday ( story) The CPL has parted ways with
Moshpit Entertainment, and so The CPL has announced
that while they do plan to still hold their summer LAN event, the $25,000 Unreal
Tournament competition has been canceled. A full refund has been issued to all
tournament participants.
AvPNews has posted a
new version of LeadWorks, the unofficial level editor for Aliens vs. Predator.
The new version has a broken model importer, so there are directions for installing
both versions on the same PC to keep this functionality. In other level editing
news, Spud Gun
Mod has posted a series of tutorials for creating Half-Life maps.
- PlanetBlackandWhite has
posted a formal apology for yesterday's story that suggested Electronic Arts
had shipped beta copies of Black & White (story)...

story at GA-Source reports that TalonSoft has announced Arab-Israeli Wars,
a new turn-based strategy game...
- XGR.com is asking
for questions for their upcoming Ask Chris Taylor Q&A...
One of Sega's announced Xbox titles ( story) is a new Panzer
Dragoon game, which I'm really excited about, but at the same time I'm a little
disappointed. When the announcement first came out I was absolutely psyched,
thinking that at long last there would be a sequel to Panzer Dragoon Saga. Well,
it looks like that's not the case, as the news has come out that
the new Panzer Dragoon is going to be a shooter. I'm still very much looking
forward to this (heck, it's the first reason I've seen to actually buy an Xbox)
but at the same time I can't help but think that no matter how good this game
is, it will feel like a step backward. The series had a real progression from
the first game, which was a pure shooter, to Zwei, which had much more storytelling
involved, and then Saga, which was a full-blown RPG (and is arguably the best
ever made). Going back to a shooter is going to feel terribly awkward. Oh well...I
guess I should be thankful it's not an online RPG. Meanwhile, I received my
copy of Black & White yesterday, and I'm already loving it (although some
of these quests are hard!), and the same can be said for TRIBES 2, which of
course is all kinds of fun.
