Warrior Kings Unveiled

Another new game announced on ECTS today is Warrior Kings, a 3D real-time strategy game by Black Cactus and Sierra. Warrior Kings is set in a fantasy medieval world, and draws comparisons to Shogun: Total War for its use of troop formations in a fully rotatable and zoomable 3D world. As lead designer Charlie Bewsher explained, economy plays a much larger role in this game though, as you start out as a castle lord with small village producing food and goods, and the goal is then to build an army, have your castle and villages grow to support it, and attack your opponents. As you makes choices along the way, you're following one of two paths through the game: good, or evil, although Charlie Bewsher also mentioned a third, technological path. The game looked quite playable already, though still a bit rough around the edges with a fair amount of fogging, but that is likely to be much improved by the time of its release next year. More information can be found on the Black Cactus website, and here are the details from the press release:

London, September 3, 2000. Sierra Entertainment and Black Cactus announced today Warrior Kings, the latest evolution in real-time strategy games. Set in the medieval fantasy world of Orbis, Warrior Kings is a true 3D RTS that allows players to create and train their own army, oversee their economy, conduct espionage, fend off dark forces, wage war -- in short, become a King, taking the path of Good or treading the path of Evil.

In development by Black Cactus, Warrior Kings allow players to command huge battalions in magnificent arrays as easily as a single unit using revolutionary battlefield simulation technology. These battalions engage the enemy in the field, while archers and troops defend their beautiful walled cities and the bustling merchant economy within the walls.

Warrior Kings is a true 3D RTS with unique features: exploit the realistic 3D terrain, lay siege to your opponents castle, dynamically evolving game path, highly advanced GUI, Advanced Synthetic Personalities for realistic opponents who will change and adapt their strategies in response to your actions. Moreover the game features stunning 3D visual effects and 3D sound, a massive single player campaign, giving hours of play as well as 50 maps of active/passive LAN/Internet play with up to sixteen players per game!

Black Cactus is a UK-based company that was incorporated in January 1999. They now have 21 highly creative designers, artists and programmers, based in our offices in Morden, South London.

Warrior Kings is due to ship in Q2 2001 on PC CD-ROM.

Necrocide Announced

Good morning from ETCS. I just finished checking out NovaLogic's new title, Necrocide: The Dead Must Die, that was announced here in London. Necrocide is a mission-based, 3D action game that casts you into the role of a female vampire, and is being built on the same engine as Delta Force: Land Warrior, so it supports the same first- and third-person viewpoints. Despite earlier intentions to show a technology demo, the game was not yet ready for prime time, but the concept art I saw indicate this will be a much more character driven game, and it is altogether quite a change for the flight-sim builder of yore. Not much else is known about the game yet, but NovaLogic expects to reveal more in a couple months' time. Here is the main text from the press release:

LONDON (September 3, 2000) - After years of pitting computer gamers against real-world military forces and ruthless terrorists in games like Comanche, F-22 Lightning II and Delta Force, NovaLogic announced today its intent to tackle an entirely different evil: The Undead.

Necrocide: The Dead Must Die, set for release in the second quarter of 2001, is an action game that casts the player as a vengeful huntress determined to exterminate hordes of evil beasties. The world's fate is in good hands -- no one knows how to kill the undead better than our heroine, since she happens to be a vampire,

The game, set in present-day and in real-world locations, sends players up against werewolves, necromancers, zombies, succubae, demons, and hellhounds. The heroine will be armed to the fangs with an arsenal of traditional and technologically advanced weapons and all manner of vampiric powers.

Built on the same fully accelerated 3D graphics engine as Delta Force: Land Warrior, Necrocide will feature a combination of vast outdoor environments and large, complex interiors. As with all of NovaLogic's games, large-scale multi-player will be supported via NovaWorld, the company's free Internet gaming service.

Thanks to the cool guys at BarrysWorld for letting me use one of their computers to make these updates.

Out of the Blue

The potential bachelor party last night turned out to have been a no-go, the plans have been re-shuffled so that this is tonight... I'm beginning to be frightened by some of the plans being suggested, but considering the ineffectiveness of this group of guys to execute plans is demonstrated by the postponement, it's possible this could be a pizza party. But we'll see. Oh yeah--I scared all the people at the beach today with a look at what a skinny glowing webmaster looks like... I'm sure I put some folks off their Perrier =].

Link of the Day: The Inscrutable 8-Ball Revealed. Thanks Red Five.
