After months of beta versions, Q3Log
version 1.00 has been released. This new version fixes various bugs and adds
a display of total players and games to the about screen in addition to other
changes. Q3Log, as its name would imply, is a log-file analyzing program for
Quake III Arena.
How about an Icewind Dale marathon? Okay: GA-RPG
interviews J.E. Sawyer a designer from Black Isle Studios
talking about the current state of Icewind Dale, their upcoming hack-and-slash
RPG set in "the Forgotten Realms." As we learn from the Q&A, the
game is quite close to completion, and the piece discusses the game's rapid
development, and what to expect from gameplay as it approaches gold
status. Also, there's an Icewind
Dale preview on Eurogamer.net describing the game (which is based on
the Icewind Dale trilogy" by R.A. Salvatore), gameplay, the use of the (Baldur's Gate) Infinity engine, and more, all based on hands-on experience. Meanwhile, RPG Vault - Chat
is having an online IRC session with the Icewind Dale team, slated for this
Wednesday at 9:00 PM EDT (6:00 PM PDT). Finally, it's " Icewind
Dale Monday" on Damage Gaming,
meaning they've posted two more images of the promo cards for those that
pre-order the game from Electronics
Boutique. There, that should cover that game for a while.
3DGN's Giants In-House Preview,
far from one of those hands-off "quickies," is a full-blown hands-on
report after visiting the land of the giants at PlanetMoon Studios to check out
progress on Giants, their upcoming action/strategy game where you can play as a
group of little sci-fi soldiers, a giant, or of course, a naked chick. As stated
above, this is from some face-time with the game and its developers, and
includes a rundown on how gameplay will work, including a look at multiplayer
play.
More hands-on impressions come in BrokenPixel's Submarine Titans Preview
based on a beta tester's impressions playing pre-release versions of Submarine
Titans, the upcoming RTS from Ellipse Studios that, as the name implies, takes
place under the sea.
And we also have a few of the hands-off , and/or E3 previews:
Apparently not even planned as a tribute to Memorial Day, there are a bunch of new
Soldier screenshots on Well Rounded Entertainment. The 25 shot gallery shows
off gameplay from this upcoming third-person shooter that puts you in the
unforgiving world of the 1998 Kurt Russell movie (if you don't think it's
unforgiving, read the reviews). The shots were taken during some hands-on play
with a "pre-beta" release of the game.
The Thief 2 Walkthrough
on Gamer's Press is a walkthrough (or skulk-through) of Thief II: The Metal
Age, the sneaky first-person shooter from the late Looking Glass Studios. The
guide gives strategy tips and level-by-level instructions, including clues on
where to find all the game's secrets.
There are more new
screenshots on the Counter-Strike
homepage, along with word that the patch will come as soon as the Half-Life
1.1/TFC 1.5 patch is released. Also, the UT
JailBreak page has the official word of something mentioned on the Team Reaction Home,
that UT JailBreak has been cancelled. The most recent build is available, along
with word on who to contact if you want to try and get the source code. Finally,
we have received enough mail about the newly-announced Single player in Q3A
project to say that reproducing their help-wanted request is by popular
demand. They are looking to fill out a team to make a full-blown single player
game mod for Q3A.
The wHeretic page
has an updated version 0.5a build 9 of the WHeretic Win32 port of Raven's
Heretic, the class-based shooter based on id Software's Doom engine. Thanks Voodoo Extreme.
The new release addresses a small glitch in the console code, and fixes what the
author hopes is the last problem related to the true looping sounds.
I mentioned the anniversary of BitchX' disappearance and Unreal's
"birthday" recently, but these last and next couple of days mark a few
other anniversaries, as well: This being Memorial Day here in the US, it
basically marks the third anniversary of M3, one of the best LAN events I ever
attended. Today is also the exact third anniversary of the release of the
original Painkeep mod,
and now is right around the second anniversary of the announcement that
TeamFortress Software being acquired by Valve, which is also right around the
third anniversary of Valve revealing itself to the world in the first place,
having announced plans for Half-Life on May 27, 1997. It was a year later on May
27, 1998 that Gary McTaggart and Charlie Brown left Ritual software, marking the
end of what had been known as the "uber-engine" project. What else?...
We're also right around Mynx and Mental4's wedding anniversary, loony's
birthday, today is the actual second anniversary of the day someone hacked a
picture of a peepee over the finger graphic here ("surprise, surprise,
surprise... that ain't my finger!"), and last but not least, this is sort
of our fourth birthday here, as it was around this point in the spring of 1996
that "blue's Quake Rag," the Quake page on "blue's 3D House of 3D
Carnage" (which became Blue's News on October '96) began daily news
coverage (though the site itself is probably closer to five years old now).
Finally, in a humorous twist, it's now been one full year that loony has been
trying to get DSL installed.
Link of the Day: Yahoo's
Memorial Day page, full of Memorial Day links. All the above aside, of
course the most significant thing about today in the US is that it is dedicated
to remembering the sacrifices of those who have defended this country in the
armed forces.

How do you react if someone calls your Mac a toy? Cover it in building blocks!
Thanks Ant.

Productions "dedicated to creating the best in low quality
entertainment" (thanks Kent Escalera). Home of stairsurfer.avi, one of
those sado-masochistic classics.
