Archived News:
The Quake 3 Jailbreak page now has
beta 2 stage 2 of Jailbreak for Quake III Arena. In Jailbreak, fragged players
are sent to jail to be rescued or executed (or, on the odd occasion, just rot).
The new update, which should be installed in addition to beta 2 stage 1, has
three brand new maps, bringing the total number of Q3A Jailbreak maps to 11.
Still to come in future updates are more new maps, as well as code updates.
After canceling his
Assault Bonus Pack, Eavy has made an update to his Assault Plus mutator,
calling it EavyAssaultII, which is now available for download on Eavy's
Unreal Tournament Mods page. The new version addresses problems with Spawn
and Block Protection as well as other internal enhancements. While the values in
this version of this server-side mutator are hard-coded, it's possible the next version will
offer them as customizable variables.
Requiem website has a new
version 0.6 beta 3 of the Requiem mod for Quake III Arena. The new version of
this Q3A version of the Requiem mod has a re-written flamethrower, adds limited
bot support, a revamped anti-camper routine, and more.
While no patch is yet available, the Descent 3 in-game auto-update feature now
has a new version 1.4 Descent 3 update (thanks Miptex). If you are interested in
what the update does, Descent3D's 1.4 Patch Fixes
page has a list of what's new and changed.
The Vampire Screenshot Gallery on Vampire Vault
has been updated with another six new screenshots showing off gameplay from
Nihilistic Software's upcoming hemoglobin-crazed RPG, Vampire: The
Masquerade-Redemption. The new shots are from the Prague and Vienna environments
of the game.
There's a new Dark Age of Camelot
Screenshot on Camelot Vault showing off an in-game shot of Mythic
Entertainment's upcoming MMORPG. The shot doesn't show any massive role-playing,
or even minor role-playing, as it is unpopulated, but it shows off the vista of
the "Norse lands" from the game.
A new installment to the
SoF developer diary on Soldier of Fortune Center has Raven programmer Keith
Fuller flexing his newfound editorial clout, as: "It turns out that no
fewer than three people actually read my article from last week and two of those
kind souls actually wrote with suggestions for future Diary topics! I had no
idea that someday I would reach such a huge audience…" Following up on
one of those reader requests, today Keith offers "a better explanation of
SOF's hit-detection and damage systems."
A few new utilities and such rolled in the door this afternoon:
De Spelletjesgarnaal, a Flemmish
gaming site, has posted a movie taken during the demonstration of Heavy Metal
FAKK2 at this year's E3. In the movie you can pretty much make out the audio
presentation, which is by Ritual Designer Tom "ParadoX" Mustaine, and
the video portion offers some second-generation footage of the game, shot with the camcorder off the monitor. The movie is in Windows .asf format, and is about a 10 MB download.
There's an
Opposing Force: CTF Q & A Session With Randy Pitchford on Planet Half-Life
talking with one of the gears at Gearbox Software about progress on the CTF
add-on for Opposing Force, itself an add-on for Valve Software's Half-Life. The
Q&A talks about how CTF in OpFor will be handled, describing the new HUD,
among other things, as well as going into the reasoning for creating a CTF
add-on, which will be included in the upcoming Half-Life 1.1/TFC 1.5 patch. The
piece includes three new screenshots, and there's another new
OpFor CTF screenshot on Voodoo Extreme.
There's a Sacrifice Interview
on In the Trenches talking with Mark Teal, the producer on Shiny
Entertainment's 3D strategy/action hybrid. The Q&A goes into detail about
the game's plot and gameplay, what makes it different from other strategy games,
and some of the nuts and bolts behind the game's technology.
There's a short Loose
Cannon interview on the Loose Cannon Network talking with Digital Anvil's
Elan Lee about progress on this upcoming auto combat game. The site's native
tongue is German, but the Q&A is all in English.
There are nine
new TRANS screenshots on GA-Strategy showing off gameplay from this upcoming
mecha RTS from WizCom Entertainment. Also, there are three new Deep Fighter
screenshots on GA-Source that draw attention to this upcoming
action/adventure game that "utilizes the powerful RenderWare3 engine."
In addition to the shots, they talk with Project Manager Griff Jenkins to learn
more about this engine. Finally we have some non-GA-shots: Operation Sports'
Midtown Madness 2 preview has the fact sheet from the game, as well as 20
new screenshots.
A second edition of the AO Vault Developer Journal
is online, with some post-E3 thoughts from Producer and Lead Designer Tommy
Strand about Anarchy Online, FunCom's upcoming science fiction MMORPG. Today's installment
discusses the types of roles folks play in these sorts of games, the issue of
whether being a bread baker is gameplay, and how to appeal to the "30 minute
gamer."
Knee Deep
in a Dream: The Story of Daikatana is the name of a massive (and quite entertaining)
article at GameSpot. The piece chronicles the epic story behind Daikatana, from
Romero's days at id, to the turmoil at ION Storm, all the way through the game's
rocky development to the end product. It's meticulously researched, and features
quotes from all over the industry, and ultimately is an honest and accurate
look at the creation of the game.
A demo from BioWare's MDK2 has
been posted over at PC.IGN (thanks Voodoo
Extreme). It's a big one, clocking in at 82 megs, and there is no word as
to the contents, so download at your own discretion. MDK, as everyone knows,
stands for "Massive Download, Knuckleheads."
Also new on PC.IGN are some new
screenshots from Giants: Citizen Kabuto, the eagerly-anticipated oddball
action/strategy game from Planet Moon. The new shots feature the Sea Reapers
(although sorry guys, no full frontal nudity is shown) and big ol' Kabuto himself.
Lastly this morning on PC.IGN are s ome
new shots and a downloadable Quicktime movie showing off the intro movie
to Submarine Titans, an upcoming RTS game from Strategy First.
Daily Radar has released some high-resolution
screenshots and a trailer from Summoner, Volition's upcoming PC and Playstation
2 RPG. Apparently the game kicked into high-resolution just after E3,
making this the first glimpse of the game in its intended resolution.
Also new at Daily Radar is the
final part of their Icewind Dale week, featuring a look at the game's NPCs.
The brief update features a description of two of the NPCs along with new screenshots
from each.
Gaming Age has received a playable copy of Homeworld: Cataclysm, and they have
taken 12
new screenshots from the game. They promise a full hands-on preview in the
near future.
If you're one of the lucky ones picked to join in the Diablo II stress test,
Gamers.com,
PC.IGN, Firing
Squad and Gamecenter
all have mirrors of the massive 99 meg file. Again, if you weren't picked, don't
bother downloading this, as it is completely useless without a beta password.
An interesting
article called Join the rebels is up at Adventure Collective, which looks
at some fan-made sequels that are in the works for popular (and abandoned) adventure
series. Amongst the games in production are sequels to Indiana Jones and the
Fate of Atlantis, Zak McKraken, Space Quest, and a new Laura Bow adventure,
not to mention multiple Monkey Island games (but sadly, no Sam & Max). While not necessarily commercial quality, it is cool to see what some obsessed fans
can do.
Q3Post version 2.0 has been released,
adding a new graphical interface for the server browser and options menu in
addition to other changes. Q3Post is a handy utility that changes your nickname
in mIRC when you join Quake III Arena servers.
If there are any former Looking Glass Employees out there in need of employment
now that the famed studio has closed its doors ( story and story),
3DO's Erik Robson sends word that those interested in work at 3DO can
email him here. Likewise,
Raven's Jake Simpson updated his .plan the other day with an offer for programmers
and level designers to e-mail resumes to either him
or Mike Crowns. If 3DO or living in Wisconsin
doesn't appeal to you, we also received this letter from EA's Alex Mayberry: In
response to the recent closure of Looking Glass, I'd like to openly invite any
individuals from that studio to submit their resumes to us here at Electronic
Arts. We certainly recognize and applaud the past achievements of Looking Glass,
and we'd love to speak to anyone from that group who'd be interested in hearing
about some of the positions that we currently have open. For more information,
please send inquiries to:

Version 1.2 of the
Hulk mod for Quake III Arena has been released. This new version adds a
new client side option to control just how big the Hulk appears. Like its name
would suggest, the mod turns one player into a giant angry beast, while the
others have to gang up on him (thanks Mark Hayes).
Well, it's Memorial Day weekend here in the US, which means a lot of people
are going to go on vacation. Not me, of course, and not Blue, although Frans
is still gallivanting around the 'states somewhere. I expect things to be fairly
dead around here for the next few days, as many people are taking a three day
weekend. Personally, I'm going to use this as an excuse to catch up on sleep...I
haven't slept into the afternoon since before E3.
Link of the Day: THE
OFFICIAL WICKED HAIR DYEING PAGE (thanks Sven H.). For everyone that read
yesterday's link of the day and wished they could have hair as cool as Seanbaby
(or Brandon "*.marine" Reinhart, for that matter).
