More on Big Huge Games

A pair of articles on today's news regarding formation of Big Huge Games (story) have popped up online...Gamecenter has posted an article that features quotes from Firaxis' Kathy Gilmore and BHG's Brian Reynolds, with Reynolds saying that they haven't decided as of yet whether to do a historical or sci-fi based game. Another piece with quotes from both Gilmore and Reynolds is up at GameSpy.com, with more details on the company's future from Reynolds, including why they plan to make a real-time, not turn-based strategy game.

More Monolith Announcements

Monolith sends along this press release formally announcing that Zombie Studios and Ripcord Games have joined the ever-growing list of LithTech engine licensees, having "secured six LithTech licenses for multiple platforms." Some of this was previously known, as SpecOps III has already been confirmed as a LithTech engine title, but the press release contains quotes from the companies regarding their love of the engine. Monolith will also have a major presence at this year's Game Developer's Conference, as shown in this press release. They will be showcasing their engine as well as conducting a presentation that covers their Playstation 2 and LithTech Online plans in addition to their regular package.

Magic Lantern Licenses LithTech

Just when you thought the LithTech announcements had quieted down, along comes this one. According to AVault, Magic Lantern, the company where former Prey lead designer Paul Schuytema resides these days, has licensed the LithTech engine for FORTS, their 3D puzzle/strategy game. Schuytema is quoted as saying the game is, "born in the military minds of the Han Dynasty and nurtured in the fertile loam of today’s cutting-edge technology."

Soldier of Fortune Q&A

Thief II Preview

Dark Sector Interview

This week's feature at loonygames is an interview with Digital Extremes, chatting to Dave Ewing and Pancho Eekels about their work on Unreal Tournament, and of course their upcoming massively multiplayer action game Dark Sector. There are two new pieces of concept art, and lots of new information on the game's design and development. Here is a quote on their design process:

Ewing: If there’s one thing we found from development of both UT and Unreal, things change. When you’re designing a game, especially with the open concept that we have, things change so often, not drastically, but there’s so many changes and shifts, minor shifts, and even some major shifts in direction that go on. Having a hugely detailed design doc before you even start is sometimes a waste of time. That’s how a game gets to be, and it really helps the game to be able to change with the times.

Deus Ex Chat Tonight

Another month has gone by, so tonight brings a new Deus Ex developers chat, and to participate you can hop over to the ION Chat Lobby, or point your IRC browser to www.ionstorm.com channel #ion. The festivities kick off at 9:00 PM EST (8:00 PM CST).

Also new are these beta Windows 9x Voodoo 3 2000/3000 drivers. These are beta drivers, and have a really scary warning, so download at your own risk.

MDK2 Preview

There is a new preview of MDK2 online at GA-Source, putting a recent beta copy of BioWare's upcoming third-person action sequel through its paces, complete with ten new screenshots. MDK, of course, stands for Mannequins Dig Kelp.

Battlecruiser Multiplayer Guide

In preparation for the upcoming multiplayer-enabled Battlecruiser Millennium demo, the official Battlecruiser 3000 AD site has posted a multiplayer play guide. It's very detailed, and like the original game, extremely complex, so study it now so you're ready when the demo is released.

Dreamland Chronicles

Bethesda Softworks has officially announced The Dreamland Chronicles: Freedom Ridge, the 3D turn-based strategic combat game formerly known as just Dreamland, and opened a teaser page with three new screenshots. Thanks FileClicks for the tip. The game is being developed by Mythos Games, creators of the first few titles in the X-COM series, and should be released by the end of the year.

Big Huge Games Uncovered

AVault is reporting that Brian Reynolds, who recently left Firaxis studios, has formed Big Huge Games with several other former Firaxis employees. AVault quotes Reynolds as saying, "Big Huge Games will emphasize excellence in all aspects of development, including design, art, technology, and production values," as well as reporting that the company will focus on, "cutting-edge technology." This would seem to be a different vision than that of Firaxis, where the emphasis has always been on gameplay, with technology trailing behind as an afterthought.

SpeedQuake Released

Version 1.0 of SpeedQuake for Quake III Arena has been released, and is available for download at its official site. Baldur's Gate II Diary

GA-RPG has posted a new installment of their ongoing Baldur's Gate II design diary. This edition has Kevin Martens, one of the lead designers, talking about the game's story. As a result, the article is spoiler-ridden, so don't read it unless you want to know some of the game's major plot points.

Terminus Journal

Station Terminus has posted a new installment of their Terminus Developer Journal, in which Vicarious Visions director of development Karthik Bala talks about the recent motion capture shoot they did for their upcoming role-playing space-combat title. A couple of photos give a look behind the scenes at the blue screen set (a different blue screen from the one most Windows users are familiar with).

Telepunt & More UT Strategies

The Telepunt page (captioned "walking sucks") has word on an unusual Unreal Tournament strategy in the vein of serendipitous classics from prior shooters like strafe-running, rocket-jumping, and bunny-hopping, describing how to "telepunt," which involves dropping your translocator dealie and "punting" it to a distant location with the impact hammer, which can make impossible locations easily (with a bit of practice) reachable (the things some people figure out!). Also, Eavy's Unreal Tournament Mods has a new advanced Assault guide, giving power strategy tips for this Unreal Tournament game-type. Eavy, who is currently ranked #1 in UT ngWorldStats for Assault, also has a guide up with tips on enhancing your own ngWorldStats Assault ranking. Finally, UT World's UT Newbie Guide offers beginner help for UT for anyone willing to fess up to the newbie label, featuring "detailed help on setting up your game, playing online, using new map files and UMODs with the game, and much more."

GreenMarine also updated his .plan with a good luck message to Zoid, another prominent example of a professional developer who came from the mod community.

UT Phantasm

Team Orbit UMods downloads page has the debut release of Phantasm for Unreal Tournament. In Phantasm all players start a match basically transparent, and players with higher frag counts become progressively more visible, while those lower in the standings become even harder to see, clearly offering an interesting approach to game balance.

Q3A Assimilation

The Assimilation 2 Home has a new version 1.03 of the Assimilation 2 mod for Quake III Arena. The new release adds a g_countTime cvar that modifies the length of the countdown and a g_respawnAfterCount cvar which can respawn everyone once the countdown is over (useful for one-on-ones). The time between rounds has been slightly reduced, as well.

Q3A Viz

The El Niño Quake Extensions has an updated version 1.5.0 of the Viz mod for Quake III Arena, which adds player classes to Q3A as well as gameplay tweaks like bleeding from wounds (including blood trails) and more. The new release "fixes a few minor annoyances/inconsistencies in some of the server-side and client-side game code."

Q1Q3 Pak

Version 2.5 of the Q1Q3 Pak is now available, providing a way to add a bit of a "Quake1 flavor" to Quake III Arena, though it's become a bit of a multi-flavor add-on, as in addition to providing some Quake sound and vision, it also makes the railgun behave more like the Quake II rail, and offers the chance to play as the Doom Marine, as well as the Quake Ranger.

LTK for AQ2

A new version 1.21 of Licensed To Kill Quake II mod that adds bots to the Action Quake2 Quake II mod is now available. The new version adds "greatly improved jump code."

NetDoom

Version 0.2 of the NetDoom deathmatch-oriented port of the Doom source code is now available. Described as "still an early version," and therefore not as "smooth" as Legacy or ZDoom, the second release adds some speed optimizations. NetDoom supports Client/Server Internet play via DirectPlay (using the jHexen jtNet dll), BOOM/ZDoom support, OpenGL and D3D Rendering, and integrated IRC support.

Editing Stuff

Shadow Realm Games sends word of the release of the commercial Shadow Realm Model Animator, "a specialized utility designed to animate and export animated game models. Import a 3d mesh, create a skeletal structure, animate the skeleton, and export the animated model." There's a shareware version to check it out before shelling out your $55.00. GreenEggsandSpam has several Quake III Arena mapping/modeling/coding tutorials done by the founder of Urban Terror. There's a new tutorial on adding player classes to Quake III Arena on Quake3mods.net. The Rogue Spear Retreat's RSB-BMP Converter offers a way to edit images from Rogue Spear without owning Photoshop by converting the files to .bmp format, which is digestible by a wider range of programs.

Competitions

Registrations are now being accepted for the next BadLAN Rising (BadLAN Rising VI "Firing For Effect") in North-Northeast England this May. The two-on-two ladder of the international MoM - Man or Mouse Tournaments for Q3A are underway. Contests

Out of the Blue

Today marks three years to the day of the installation of my ISDN connection (anyone familiar with this process knows this means it's probably also the fourth anniversary of having placed the order for the service). I was originally going to write in that first sentence as this being the third anniversary of my being an LPB (low-ping bastard), but over the course of that time the proliferation of cable modems and xDSL connections, ISDN now seems to fall somewhere in the middle of the pack as far as connections go... sort of an MPB.

Mogul Molyneux

Lionhead’s Master Plan on CheckOut.Com alludes to the recent "engine wars" dispute, describing the method of game production at Peter Molyneux's Lionhead Studios as a third alternative to creating or licensing game engine technology, making the analogy to the old "studio system" of movie production. The method actually sounds like a more full-featured version of a traditional licensing agreement, but maybe there are unmentioned provisions for sleeping with studio executives or something.

Shadow Watch Interview

CheckOut Games also interviews Kevin Perry talking with the Red Storm designer about progress on Shadow Watch, RSE's upcoming strategy/RPG that goes against the current trend of cutting-edge 3D graphics by following an old-school 2D design.

Neocron Screenshots

There are a couple of shots from Neocron on GA-RPG from Neocron: Virtual City, an upcoming online 3D RPG from Reakktor Media "set in a 27th century metropolis." According to the caption, "These screenshots show how the textures add detail to the low poly tank class character."

Vampire Movie

There's a new Vampire: Masquerade--The Redemption video special for download on the German site The Graveyard, that's taken from the covermount CD from the German gaming magazine Gamestar. The file is in Windows Media Player Format, with a German voice-over, but the video portion is about half gameplay with the other half consisting of cinematic sequences, the first such scenes made available as far as we can recall.

Eurogamer.net Evolva interview talks with three members of the Evolva team, Vince Farquharson (Producer), Rik Heywood (Lead Programmer), and Karl Wickens (Lead Artist) about Computer Artworks' upcoming first- and third-person shooter.

FAKK2 Engine Details and Screenshot on GA-Source offers a look at Ritual's "Morpheus Script System" they are using in their Quake III-engine game that "allows for unsurpassed control of actors and objects." The update includes some engine details from Ritual Programmer (not to be confused with a Ritual Killer) Scott Alden giving some details about this tool, which F.A.K.K.2 has inherited from Sin.

John Carmack on Zoid's Departure

A comment by John Carmack to a thread titled Dave 'Zoid' Kirsch Leaving id Software on SlashDot (thanks ShugaShack) discusses the reasons behind the Zoid's recently announced departure (story), starting off saying: "I had talked with Zoid about it a few times over the years, and I think he is making a pretty good decision," and concluding: "We are parting on the best of terms (leaving right AFTER a project completes is the considerate way to go). He is going to finish up the Quake2 linux updates (better X/GLX support), even if he has to complete the work from his new job."

Mondo Screenshots

VRND Nearing Completion, Dark Magic in Development on GA-Source offers development details and screenshots for both the "architecturally accurate representation of the Notre Dame Cathedral of Paris," and Dark Magic, which is looking to bust out of being just a mod to become a full retail UT product. There are also some new high-resolution screenshots of Earth 2150 on Beta Bites showing off the upcoming 3D RTS that, for no reason you could ever justify to me, offers the subtitle "Escape from the Blue Planet." GameSpot UK's Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun Firestorm Preview is accompanied by a modest (for them) seven shot Screenshot Gallery. Also, Starbase Armada has screenshots of the upcoming Star Trek Armada multiplayer beta, scheduled to enter a limited round of closed beta-testing tomorrow (story). Also, there are four new Sudden Strike screenshots on Gamesurf.De. The first LightBikes version 2.0 shot is up. Finally, there are shots of new upcoming enhancements to the Blitz 3D engine on the ACID REIGN page.

Tech Bits

Shogun Preview

Computer Games Online 's Shogun: Total War preview offers "a Japanese combo platter, with rice, Part 2" (presumably this is from Column B, while yesterday's part one (story) would be from Column A). Shogun: Total War is an upcoming 3D RTS from Creative Assembly where you play a warlord in feudal Japan.

UT Crotch Shot

A new mutator (in the most literal sense) for Unreal Tournament titled Crotch Shot is now available. It doesn't take much imagination to figure out that this is a modification that rewards you for shooting someone where it hurts, prizing the Crotch Shot as much as the C.O. giving the photographer his marching orders for the Ann Margret USO show in Full Metal Jacket (there was a long run for a short bus ride, huh?).

UT BoomBall

A new release of the BoomBall for Unreal Tournament Modification (A.K.A. Nuke the Flag) is now available. BoomBall is described as similar to Capture the Flag, where two teams compete for a single ball (which they point out "looks suspiciously like a redeemer rocket") which will spawn at any point on the map, emitting a noise to aid in location (its heading and distance are also noted on the HUD). Scoring is accomplished by returning the "ball" to your base, where it will explode, making any glory you will receive for your efforts to be posthumous, although you can die knowing you will take any pursuers to the grave with you.

UT MouseBall

A new release of MouseBall for Unreal Tournament, frogstomper's oddball mouseball sport for UT, is now available. The new release adds "Trigger Darts" a placeholder projectile weapon (temporary until a more mouse-oriented metaphor can be conjured up), and other changes including a ball that acts more like a ball.

Classic CTF for Q3A

The "much anticipated" public beta release Classic CTF for Quake III Arena is now available, promising the "Same Game, Different Engine!" Word is "The public beta includes a grappling hook, runes, super nailgun, weapons stay, CTF Optimized Weapons Physics, as well as lots more. There's a new exclusive high-quality map in there, too!"

Q3A Elite HUD

A new version 3 of the Elite HUD for Quake III Arena is now available on Equims Emporium. "Features include a new mini-scoreboard (don't need to press 'tab' to see) and the ability to 'hold' your weapon in multiple positions (e.g. in your left hand, your right hand or in the centre, Quake 1 style)."

New Jumbot

A new version 1.7 of The Jumbot for Half-Life is up on Rich's Project Warehouse changing the bot so that the default map CFG is executed every level right before level configs, so level settings can be applied on top of the default settings, fixing a small bug in item retrieval, and many other bug fixes.

New QuakeForge

There's a new version 0.1.1 the QuakeForge OpenSource Quake development project. "This version fixes all known bugs in 0.1.0 and will hopefully be the last version in the 0.1 series. The project is busy working hard and making major progress with the 0.2 series which we hope to bring you soon!"

Editing Stuff

There are some Unreal 2 editor bits & pieces on Unreality and Unreal2Ed Shots and Info on Unreal Universe each talking with Warren Marshall, level designer at Legend Entertainment (currently working on Unreal 2), about Unreal2ED, the updated Unreal level editor mentioned in several .plan updates yesterday (story) that will be released by Warren "when he's feelin' randy." The MapFinger site has passed the 900 map mark and now lists over 500 map authors with their own .plan files. Version 0.31 of the DOS-based Quake Unit Conversion Tool will quickly convert various real-world measurements into quake units and vice versa. Turn down your speakers before visiting Grandpappy's Cabin, where they are posting a .utx file with new Unreal Tournament textures every day for the next week. Word on the Tread 3D page is the project may not be dead just yet (thanks FloppyDisks). Unreality's Mini Q&A with Clawfist talks with the author of three of the maps in the new UT Bonus Pack. Finally, Pure DM's editing contest has two phases: a Dead Simple contest and an Empire contest, with rules, and prizes, and everything.

Competition

The winners in the Domination category of the $150,000 Make Something Unreal Contest have been announced (thanks Josh Tyrell). The First Place winner is DOM-Reliquary by ruineR, second place is DOM-Hysteria by Entropy and Cyanlongbow, and third place is DOM-Syncronicity][- by No ReMoRsE.

Off-Topic

That missing Eudora 4.x-4.3 update for registered users is finally up on the Eudora Pro Email v4.2.2 Updaters page, also beta 2 of WinZip version 8.0 is now available (thanks Schnapple). A new beta 1 version 1.2.6 of the Voodoo Lights screensaver (thanks Voodoo Extreme) has been released and a new version 2.0 of the PondLife screensaver is up on DemoNews.com. Finally the year 2000 Geek Pride Festival has been announced.
