TRIBES Master Server Change

Still more Starsiege TRIBES news: Dynamix' Tim "Slacker" Gift sends along an announcement of a change in the TRIBES Master Server IP that may be leaving users who have not upgraded past version 1.0 in the cold for the moment. Here's the deal:

Problems connecting to the master server? Or only getting a list of 8-9 servers? No IRC? Here is the deal: the IP addresses of our master server, and IRC server, were changed this morning. Unfortunately, we were not informed this was going to happen. It's caught us by surprise and is causing some problems. Those of you with version 1.2 or 1.3 of TRIBES should not have any problems finding or connecting to servers. TRIBES 1.0 clients will only see a small list of server (8 or 9). We are changing the DNS entries to correct the problem, but it may take until tomorrow evening before it all settles down. You can either wait for it to pop back up, or try upgrading to 1.3 . There is nothing we can do about the IRC server, if you are having problems connecting to IRC, it's because the IP address change hasn't propagated to your ISP. This will eventually happen, but could take up to 24hrs, doh! (for those that can't wait for their IRC fix, the new IRC IP is 209.1.233.139)

TRIBES Map Vote

Scott "Sissy Nancy Boy" Youngblood updated his .plan with a mention of the controversial change he's made to the Broadside map, saying he is opening up a vote on the subject:

Ok,

I'm the 'Sissy Nancy Boy' that changed the Broadside map. :) I and other dev team members felt that there were way too many stalemates happening on the original version of Broadside. So I changed it to be a little easier to grab the flag. It seems that are a few vocal voices out there who do NOT like the new map. So... I'll leave it up to YOU the community to decide the ultimate fate of that map.

Email me with your vote with your preference in the subject line: (only 1 vote per person please)

YES - you like the new map NO - you DON'T like the new map

If I receive a resounding majority of people who want that map changed back I'll change it.

Voting ends in 1 week on Thursday the 14th of March.

CornBoy!

TRIBES 1.3 Fixes

Word on PlanetStarSiege is that if you are having OpenGL problems after installing the 1.3 mouse (lag, jittery mouse, etc.), make sure your Windows desktop is not set to 32-bit color. Also, I and a couple of other folks I know have been getting bounced out to the desktop when running version 1.3, and now Sixxo from Insomniax.net sends word with a solution that worked for me: Shadows are not working properly in the new version, so if you've turned shadows on in your ClientPrefs.cs file, you must disable them ($pref::shadowDetailMask = "0"; and $pref::shadowDetailScale = "0.000000";).

Heretic II EP Update

Jake "The Gent" Simpson updated his .plan with another status report on the upcoming Enhancement Pack for Heretic II. The update is extremely lengthy, and touches on plans for Soldier of Fortune as well. Here's a snip that gives a feel for what this is all about:

The EP. Is it just me or is this dragging on or what ? Well, it seems to be, even from our end. The current state of affairs is that we are done with the code for now, its in QA, its just a question of waiting for those guys to have at it. The problem here is that there are other projects in the pipeline for Activision that are revenue producing, so they get the QA teams first. And rightly so. However, it puts us in the situation of waiting for 'as and when' time from the testers. Annoying, but understandable. The EP can't go out un QA'd, no one wants a buggy product do they ?

Some people have asked 'can't we just have the bug fixes, then the rest later' ? Good question but the answer is no, and here are a couple of reasons.

You're Stuck With Me

I was planning on a cross-country trip today, but as I mentioned in my little Out of the Blue ramble, my healthy webmaster lifestyle has left me a bit too under the weather to go, so updates will continue as they normally would today.

As always, you can connect to the chat via IRC using www.ionstorm.com as the server and #ion as the channel, or through the online section of the ION Storm website. Also, there's a big Daikatana Feature on 3DGaming.Net that professes to offer some never before seen info. Even if it doesn't, it's a very complete rundown on planned features from ION's upcoming shooter. Another large hands-off preview of Daikatana is on Ultimate Games.

I haven't had any real confirmation that there's an identifiable problem on some systems, but if you are having trouble with the new minidriver, you may want to try the older one and see if it helps.

Out of the Blue

I am supposed to make my way out to San Francisco today to check out Redline, but I'm feeling quite under the weather at the moment, the remnants of dentistry combined with a remaining feeling of queasiness from this weekend's episode of food poisoning (BTW, I've been reminded of the restaurant, if you go to "St. Hubert's," for heaven's sake, avoid the chicken fillets). This leaves me unsure I am up to another grueling travel day today, which would involve some 13+ hours travel surrounding an eight hour visit, so I'm going to try and grab a couple of hours shuteye in between and see if I'm up to it, so I'll clarify whether I'm around today in a later update (when I know).

I fixed the bug in the search that was not going to the right bookmark on the search result. Unfortunately, I believe the bug where the "last 2 days" link skips the previous day will not be fixed until this weekend (sorry about that). Apparently I wasn't the only one incredulous at that Windows uptime story, as the reactions on CNET indicate. Thanks ZhiZi. If you're worried you are getting close to a crash, ShellTime sits in your system tray counting off your uptime. Yesterday's quote was Young Frankenstein ("There castle!").

Link of the Day Part I: The Save MST3K Page. Part II: The Penguin Dance (thanks Psyci Tariani), which is getting old, but you may be collecting the whole set.
