Local Nocturne Demo

As promised earlier, here's a local copy of the Nocturne demo released earlier (story) and a list of mirrors. The demo weighs in at a hefty 109 MB.

Nocturne Demo Redux

3DFiles' Nocturne Demo page has word that there was a problem with the cdrom.com mirror of the Nocturne demo they posted earlier, and the link has been pulled while they fix it. Meanwhile, if you tried downloading this whopper from there and had a problem with a corrupted download, you can try resuming your download from there when it's been finished uploading, or, perhaps resuming from the working mirror they have posted. Thanks Ant (who I think is also the one who spotted the bad file). Also, I saw on Voodoo Extreme that there's a CGW Nocturne Demo FAQ up for those who've gotten the download to work, but can't get it running, but there's only one Q&A so far, saying "The most common problem is it doesn't run because hardware acceleration is turned on by default. The solution, is to turn hardware acceleration off, and run in 32bpp software rendering." Finally, to help ease all the download strain, I'll post a local copy here, with a list of mirrors I can dig up, as soon as I can.

Half-Life FAQ Update

HQH's Website has a new version 9.4 of the unofficial Half-Life FAQ, as promised, converted from a text document (the text version has been discontinued), to an HTML file, which weighs in at a whopping (for HTML) 400 KB, though there is a considerably smaller zipped version for download.

Q3Test Strategies

Saw on PlanetQuake News that DeathMatch 101 has posted a new Quick Guide to Quake III Test offering tips on how to come out on top of the frag heap.

Q3Test Tweaker

I saw on Voodoo Extreme earlier that a new version 0.7.5 of the Q3A Setup tweaking utility for Q3Test was available. Unfortunately, upon downloading it I found it didn't work. Now, after checking back at the 3DApp Home, I see a version 0.7.5 beta fix is up, which actually operates, so if you're looking for a front-end to help with some of the more obscure options in Q3Test, check it out. Similarly, the tweaks at Q3Tweak say a new release of their Q3Test tweaking program will be tomorrow.

Unreal Tournament Screenshots

Qamex Games Centre has posted four exclusive new 800x600 Voodoo2 screenshots from ECTS showing off action from Epic's upcoming Unreal Tournament.

Parsec Interview & Screenshots

Gamers.de has posted an interview with Lead Programmer Markus Hadwiger on the upcoming space shooter Parsec in both English and German, as well as four new screenshots showing off the game.

Delta Force Movie Part III

On the heels off yesterday's click2send release of the Delta Force 2 trailer (story), and the release earlier today of the movie as a zip file on NovaCentral News Network (story), comes word from NovaCentral News Network that they now have the trailer as a bandwidth-friendly ~2 MB RealPlayer version.

Nocturne Demo

3DFiles Game Demos - Nocturne page has a playable demo of Nocturne that looks to be from a magazine CD (if I read correctly, the October 1999 Computer Gaming World magazine with demo CDROM, on newsstands now). The demo is a whopping 107 MB, and it is noted that the "demo is 3 months away from code completion. It has been tested on Matrox G200/G400, ATI Rage 128, S3 Savage 3D, or TnT/TnT2 for 3D acceleration, but many Voodoo cards have troubles with it still, although you can run it in software mode. The faster the better, a 400 MHZ CPU is recommended for software mode."

DirectX 7 Friday?

With a DX7 buzz already a buzzing due to a recent release candidate for the MS Premium Elite, ActiveWindows has posted a report that they've received an "official" release date for DirectX 7, the next revision in the Microsoft's API, as next Friday, September 10. Thanks 3DNews.Net by way of the unstoppable Frans at 3D Action Gamers.

Urban Chaos Music & Interview

The UrbanChaos.Net has posted an exclusive interview with musician Martin Oliver and tester Justin Amore from Mucky Foot about M.F.'s Urban Chaos, an upcoming third-person game best described as Tomb Raider-esque. The piece includes news about gameplay, technology, and a free music sample in mp3 format from the game's soundtrack.

On No Soldier of Fortune Co-op

Kenn Hoekstra's .plan has an update on a touchy subject for some, the news that Raven will not be supporting cooperative multiplayer play in their upcoming Quake II-engine shooter, Soldier of Fortune. Here's the dope:

I've been getting a lot of e-mails and seeing a lot of message board posts lately regarding Co-Op play in Soldier of Fortune. Our decision not to support Co-Op play was a painful one to make, but unfortunately, Co-Op support was never really an option. The single-player game for SoF is laden with cinematics and character interaction and designing for Co-Op would be a nightmare to plan out and implement and it would add at least 6 months to the development cycle. Ouch... We are confident that the single-player game, team deathmatch and the plethora of multiplayer games and options will more than make up for the absence of Co-Op. I apologize to the Co-Op "die hards" out there...

Gore Update

The Gore Screenshots page has a pair of new shots of the player character from this upcoming first-person shooter to show off the visible weapons and armor (you can see what your opponent is wearing and carrying). In one shot he's armed to the teeth with a spike gun a helmet and light armor, and in the other, fairly unfettered with no armor, and holding but a pistol (which constitutes as heavily-armed in real life).

Rage 128 "Special Purpose" Drivers

BetaNews has word of some "Special Purpose Drivers" for ATI RAGE 128-based graphics cards. Apparently the special purpose is not like Navin Johnson's, word on the page is "These are for those using a K6/K7 3DNow!, Pentium III SSE, or for those wanting to run Quake3 Test. They are version 6.20CDH29 for Windows 9x and NT4." I can't find a page on the ATI site, but the BetaNews folks have a direct link up.

FreeSpace 2 Ads

There are scans of the FreeSpace 2 magazine ads up on The Descent Chronicles for those dying for more glimpses of this upcoming space sim (or for those whose favorite parts of the gaming mags are the ads).

Delta Force 2 Movie Again

Frans, who clearly is off the decaffeinated, sends word that the Delta Force 2 movie released yesterday in that obtuse digital safe deposit box dealie (story), has been posted as a normal download at the NovaCentral News Network (thanks to Matthias at The Patches Scrolls for spotting it). He says the movie is 180x120, has a 1:22 running time, and is 22 MB, but he's posted a 15 MB zipped version on 3D Action Gamers' Delta Force 2 page.

Killcreek Interview

The Adrenaline Vault interviews Stevie "Killcreek" Case talking with the ION Storm level designer in a Q&A that talks briefly about her upcoming appearance in Playboy (story), progress on Daikatana, and primarily about her past, present, and future role in the Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL).

Alice Update

As promised the other day, a new gallery section has been added to the official American McGee's Alice home page, with five pieces of concept art for you to look at, as well as another in their series of baffling riddles.

Freespace 2 Preview

Insomniax.net has posted a hands-on preview of Freespace 2 that's based on a build the author received, complete with 22 new screenshots from this space sim.

Lippy Released

Those zany guys at StrangeCompany have released another one of their tools for Quake II demo movie authors...it's called Lippy, and it allows for full lip-synching of characters, as well as the ability to add emotions to their faces. It sounds pretty cool, so check it out.

FreeSpace 2 Interview

Planet FreeSpace interviews Philip Holt talking with the director of product development at Volition about FreeSpace 2, his background, his favorite things in FreeSpace, the best Volition pool player, where is the best place to get pizza in the Champaign area, and vital stuff like that. Saw that (along with the spiffy description) at The Descent Chronicles.

BattleZone II Preview

There's a BattleZone II preview on GameSpot UK with a hands-on look at this upcoming action/strategy sequel accented with several new screenshots.

New GLHexen

Kokak's Hexen Page has a new version 0.8 of Kokak's OpenGL port of the publicly available Hexen source-code (which is based on the also publicly available Doom source). Word there is that since DoomGL shares its OpenGL engine with GLHexen (and GLHeretic), GLHexen could also support MD2 files (the 3D format used in Quake 2 for the objects) soon, just like DoomGL does. Also noted there, is that the ports on the page required Hexen 1.1, and don't work with Hexen version 1.0 or the demo version of Hexen. Thanks again Frans at 3D Action Gamers.

Nocturne Preview and Screenshots

The Adrenaline Vault previews Nocturne looking ahead at TRI's upcoming horror-noire game calling it "a George Romero ode to Lovecraft with a deep tip of the hat to pulp fiction ethos" (that's George, not John). In addition to the look ahead at the game, there are several D3D screenshots showing off it's eye candy. And as if that weren't enough, there are Nocturne Screenshots on GA-Source showing off 15 scenes from the game.

HexenWorld Chronos Bots

Hexenworld, the site, has word of a "tentative" version 1.00 release of the Chronos Bot for HexenWorld, the program (the version of Hexen II enhanced with QuakeWorld-style networking). Thanks Frans at 3D Action Gamers.

3dfx Interview

Thresh's FiringSquad has posted an interview with 3dfx' Scott Sellers, discussing a variety of issues with the CTO of the company. The interview is particularly timely after this past week's announcements from NVIDIA and S3 about their next-generation chipsets. Here's a quote that shines some light on what their new technology will (and won't) be capable of:

We believe full-scene AA is going to absolutely reset the image quality standard for next generation 3D accelerators. Once people see their favorite games rendered at real-time frame rates completely anti-aliased, they are never going to be able to look at aliased rendering again (regardless of how many triangles there are in a scene!). Trust us, we've been staring at anti-aliasing algorithms for quite some time now and it's miserable looking at aliased renderings now that we've become so accustomed to the amazing visual quality improvements associated with anti-aliased rendering.

And the biggest problem with the GeForce in this regard is that they are selling a future promise that games will eventually take advantage of their geometry acceleration, albeit at a substandard fillrate. The full-scene AA capability of our next generation products upgrades every single game currently available. Consumers won't have to wait 9-12 months for new games to take advantage of new graphics technology. The day a user plugs a T-Buffer enabled graphics accelerator in their system, their library of games is immediately upgraded with substantial visual quality improvements as a result of the ground breaking anti-aliasing technology.

Prince of Persia 3D Preview

Next-Generation Online has posted a new preview of Prince of Persia 3D, with four new screenshots, a bit of history about the title, and the rest of the usual preview text. Just a reminder - the PoP3D demo was released last weekend.

More D3 Tournament Coverage

The AllGames Network has posted their coverage of the $50,000 Descent 3 tournament, and while it's not quite as entertaining as the one posted last night (story), it's still worth checking out. Hey, it was in Las Vegas. It's just gotta be entertaining.

More Nocturne

In addition to yesterday's Nocturne screenshots and AVI, there's also some new illustrations up on Spookhouse.org, showing off the characters from the game. Hop over there and head to their "research" section to check them all out (they're very impressive).

Reviews

Fruit of the loon

Yesterday was one of those days that proved just how great Blue's News readers are. In case you missed it, in an effort to get me to finish up this week's contest (which went up yesterday - good luck, it's freaky hard), Blue posted my e-mail address along with an invitation for people to send (cough) letters of encouragement. Now I was expecting a deluge of flames, nags, death threats, and the usual bag of disgruntled mail...but you know what? It didn't happen. Sure, I got a few, but not nearly anything that would qualify as a mail bomb. You guys rule.

Link of the Day: Being Stephen King. A place where Stephen Kings all over the world can go to complain about how they get mistaken for the best-selling horror novelist.

Descent 3 Tournament Coverage

Next-Generation Online has posted a writeup from the $50,000 Descent 3 tournament that was held recently in Las Vegas. It's definitely not plan old coverage, but it's well worth the read just because of lines like, "I can't even beat the other press guys and they suck. I can't even kill the guy from PC Accelerator and he's drunk off his ass."

Half-Life Stuff

The newly redesigned I.AM Half-Life has posted a bunch of new stuff for you to enjoy this evening, including an updated list of console commands (they were updated to include version 1.0.1.3 commands), over 100 new DM maps, 50 new models and skins, and a whole bunch more.

Microsoft Responds

To follow-up on an earlier story, Microsoft has issued a response to the allegations about an NSA backdoor being included in the Windows operating system, which they claim are "inaccurate and unfounded." You can read the whole thing on Microsoft's site (thanks Ben White).

KISS the Messiah

GameSpot has posted a preview of Shiny's Messiah based on a hands-on demo they received (with the first few complete levels). There are nine screenshots there as well, showing off this oddball title. Also on GameSpot are the first in game shots (at least to the best of my knowledge, anyway) from KISS: Psycho Circus - The Nightmare Child, a LithTech powered shooter in development by Third Law Interactive.

Homeworld Delayed - Sorta

According to GameSpot news, Sierra's Homeworld has slipped its planned release date - but only by a week. They're reporting that it should be released nationwide next week.

Nocturne Preview

GameCenter has posted a sneak peek at Terminal Reality's Nocturne, with a bunch of screenshots from this third person title (thanks Frans). For more Nocturne stuff, check out the AVI from earlier (story), although be warned - it's a slow download.

New Skout Demo, Patch

A new version of the Skout demo has been released, as has a new patch to bring the German retail edition up to version 1.01. Thanks Frans at 3D Action Gamer's Archives, who's also posted a mirror of both files for those of you not looking forward to downloading a 20+ MB file from a German site.

GameSpot Previews

GameSpot UK has posted two new previews for your reading enjoyment - one on Nihilistic's Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption, and one previewing Raven's Soldier of Fortune. Both are chock full of screenshots, so check 'em out (thanks VE).

Nocturne AVI

The official Nocturne home page has posted part one of a four part AVI from this spooky game (thanks Poynter and Spookhouse). The download is a big one at over 20MB, but if you're curious what the game looks like, there's no better way to find out.

NSA Windows Backdoor?

Doo, doo, doo, looking out my backdoor! Crypto expert Microsoft products leave door open to NSA is a CNN article with a startling revelation (thanks to the very many who wrote in on this):

The chief scientist at an Internet security company reported the flaw at a recent conference in Santa Barbara where he discussed a "key" entrance into the cryptographic standard used in Microsoft Windows products. That includes Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT4 and Windows2000.

"It turns out that there are really two keys used by Windows; the first belongs to Microsoft, and it allows them to securely load (the cryptography services)," said Andrew Fernandes in a press release. Fernandes works for Cryptonym, a company based in Ontario.

The press release states "the second belongs to the NSA. That means that the NSA can also securely load (the services) on your machine, and without your authorization."

The discovery "highly suggests" that the NSA has a key it could use to enter encrypted items on anybody's Windows operating system, said Ian Goldberg, chief scientist at Zero-Knowledge Systems. Goldberg was among a few dozen people in the audience at the conference when Fernandes dropped his bomb.

Contest

Buckling under pressure (story), I've gone and uploaded this week's trivia questions. Be warned...since our last contest was way too easy, it's possible that this one is way too hard (insert mad cackling here). Oh, and there's some new Tiny Text™ in case you're too intimidated to actually enter. Hop over and check it out.

Surreal Technology Update

A new post to the Surreal Technology Page has the latest status on the Drakan patch currently in beta testing, as well as a clarification (thanks VE):

Beta Testers are reporting a massive Internet performance improvement with the new Drakan Winsock patch! They say it is a whole new game experience! Kudos to Satish for his hard work with this gem! Still on track for availability within the next 10 days.

I've seen several reviews lately implying that Drakan's multiplayer is through Mplayer only (and then ripping on the Multiplayer game because they hate Mplayer). Drakan IN NO WAY forces you to play through Mplayer, in fact, Mplayer is merely a side option in the normal path to Drakan's own in-game server browser. Any reviewer that states otherwise has obviously not even played multiplayer for more than 5 minutes.

Half-Life Skin Installer

Breezin Software has created a Half-Life Skin and Map Installer that makes installation of maps and custom skins simple. Amongst its features are a CRC check on all archives, the automatic detection of player directories and more. Swing by and check it out.

On Kingpin Editing

The Wastelands, a new Kingpin editing site is open for business, and aims to be a resource for map authors and mod makers. There are two tutorials up at launch, including one on using the "Pawn o' Matic" in your mods, and one on those cool sky brushes.

New BC3K

Version 2.08 RC 9 of Battlecruiser 3000 AD has been released and is available for download on its official site. This version has a slew of enhancements, including ground units with the ability to launch air and ground troops, which was actually ported over from Battlecruiser 3020 AD. A full list of changes can be found on the BC3K version control page.

Gore Update

The official 4DRulers page has posted a new screenshot from the upcoming test demo of Gore, their first person shooter currently in development, as well as word that it's, "coming along great."

Driver Demo Released

As promised earlier today, the Driver demo has been released (thanks Ryan). The demo is available Gigex format for modem users, or as a 14MB download for network users. Don't forget, they've got "unlimited bandwidth" so go nuts. If the demo is half as good as the PlayStation version, it's highly recommended.

TRIBES Extreme Movie

MeccaWorld has posted a new movie from TRIBES Extreme in both AVI and Quicktime formats, with 45 seconds of new gameplay footage from this special edition of Starsiege: TRIBES that's coming this November.

Blizzard to Change World?

Jeez, first NVIDIA, now Blizzard. It would appear that Blizzard's homepage now has a teaser image up that reads, "The World Will Change - 9.5.99" (thanks Jonathan Bowling). You may recall that this is the date they are planning on unveiling their new game on at ECTS (story).

Deep Space Nine Screenshots

The Adrenaline Vault News has posted 18 new screenshots from The Collective's upcoming Star Trek game that uses the Unreal engine, Deep Space Nine.

US DarkStone Demo

As promised, DarkStoneNews has the US release of the demo of DarkStone, the action/RPG that's often compared to Diablo. The demo is about 26 MB, and if you get too badly stuck, believe it or not, they've already got a Demo Walkthrough up.

Rogue Spear Video Support

This page has been added to the Rogue Spear site to show what video cards will be supported in Red Storm Entertainment's upcoming Sequel to Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six (the GeForce 256 is not yet listed if you are mortgaging the house to bid on eBay). Thanks Frans at 3D Action Gamers.

Delta Force 2 Interview

The folks over at SimHQ.com send word that they've interviewed Wes Eckhart, a producer over at NovaLogic talking about Delta Force 2, discussing, among other things, "how Voice over Net technology is impacting the simulation gaming industry."

10-six Shots

There are four new 10-six Screenshots on Gamer's Alliance Strategy showing off a couple of scenes of gameplay from this upcoming million player game (these shots each generally show about 999,998 fewer players than that).

Daikatana Status Report

God Virus was the first of several to send along a snippet from an IRC appearance by KillCreek and the Romero last night that talks of the status of Daikatana. Some checking reveals the log was legit, actually part of an interview with KillCreek by Sgt. Hulka, obviously discussing her plans to show her stuff in Playboy (story). Here's the part about Daikatana that got the attention of the attendees:

<Romero> Daikatana's doing great. Things are going well; game's gonna have a big demo in 2 weeks for PRESS ONLY.
<KillCreek> Full game for xmas. yay!

That sounds at first like it might be another demo version released to the press, but in writing back to confirm that it was really himself and KC saying those things, John elaborated a bit more on what's up with that demo, which will be a showing of the game for the press (the state of the game's development evident in his signature):

Yeah, i wrote that stuff. :)

We will have Gamespot, PC Gamer, CGW, Gamecenter, Computer Strategy Plus, Incite, Next Gen, PC Accelerator, etc. coming at the end of Sept. for a press PREVIEW of Daikatana. We're getting pretty close now.

John Romero
Ion Storm - Game Designer, Chairman
Daikatana: Whoa, it's almost finished!

Unreal Tournament Update

Epic's Cliff Bleszinski made a post to the official UT message board with an update on Unreal Tournament's current status (thanks Unreal Universe):

Anyways, today we fixed a bit of bot funkiness in DM-Barricade and DM-Conveyor, and reduced the amount of "A" bugs to only a few. We'll be building a new version Thursday night and firing it off to the remote testers in Utah while we test with remote people the net play some more.

Oooooh and demo recording/playback is smooth as silk now. Mek has banged on it so it is Worthy. I like making demos of one on one Godlike bot stomping in my levels, it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

Almost there.

Amen Update

Cavedog's Amen: The Awakening Developer's Journal has been updated, with a complete account of how the backstory was created. It's pretty interesting stuff, as they seem to have done a great deal of work to ensure a solid story (thanks Frans).

Black & White Shots

Black & White Wire has posted four new screenshots from Lionhead's Black & White (one of which appears to show a giant cow beating up on a character from The Lion King. Or maybe that's just what I'm seeing).

More Mac Unreal Tournament

Part two of MacGamer's Ledge's Mac Unreal Tournament preview is online, mostly discussing Game Types based on hands-on play with a beta of the Mac version of Unreal Tournament, accompanied by twenty four brand-new screenshots as well as "peek at the narration of the Unreal Tournament flyby scene."

BattleZone 2 Units

Pandemic Studios' Official Battlezone II Site has a pair of "swift new scouting vehicles" on display, with new shots of the ISDF 'Thunderbolt' and the Scion 'Sentry'. Thanks Voodoo Extreme.

On Wheel of Time Cinematics

The Adrenaline Vault News has a post up with some shots and a discussion of the pre-rendered cinematics from a recent build of Wheel of Time, the upcoming Unreal-engine game from Legend Entertainment, stating a preference for the pre-rendered intros and cutscenes (personally, I prefer game engine cutscenes, I imagine I'm not the only one). The article has several screenshots of the cinematics, along with an explanation and shots showing how they were made.

AM Tech Bits

Kibbles and bits and bits and bits....

Neverwinter Nights Preview

Computer Games Online previews Neverwinter Nights looking at this upcoming RPG they describe as a "single-player game with an incredible multiplayer twist. Now, creative players will get to Dungeon Master (DM) their very own adventures."

RTS Stuff

PC.IGN.COMs Ground Control Interview talks with Massive Entertainment President Martin Walfisz about his company's first game, an upcoming 3D RTS called Ground Control. Thresh's FiringSquad's Weekly Metal Fatigue Screenshots have been updated (I guess they are serious about that weekly thing). GameFan previews Imperium Galactica 2 calling it a 3D RTS space opera.

TRIBES2 Screenshots

Datumplane::Starsiege has posted a few new screenshots showing off action from Dynamix Starsiege TRIBES2, currently in development. There are a pair of outdoor shots (including more cool lightning), and one showing off an indoor area.

Delta Force 2 Trailer

NovaLogic sends word that a gameplay trailer from their upcoming Delta Force 2 is available for download via the unique delivery system provided by click2send, where users can get the files delivered to some sort of digital strongbox. Not sure how it works other than this explanation they sent along:

Under the exclusive agreement, MusiCosm members will be advised via E-mail that the trailer is waiting for them in a personalized click2send Digital Safe Deposit Box™ for free. From there, recipients link directly to the box, where they are able to either open the trailer or save it to disk locally. MusiCosm will be the exclusive online source for the trailer.

Intergraph Woes

Intergraph to take $20 million charge, lay off 400 is an article on CNET News.com detailing troubles at the workstation manufacturer. Thanks Dan at MeccaWorld.

Quake/Quake II Movie News

Strange Company sends word that they've released a fix for their patch for their strange Quake (1) movie Eschaton: Darkening Twilight to fix a problem had with truncated filenames (a full fixed installer is also available). In addition, they have released a Tech Demo "from the upcoming fully-lipsynched Eschaton: Nightfall Special Edition" of a new lip-synching tool for Quake II called "Lippy," that should help remove the Godzilla effect from Quake II movies when available.

Reviews

etc.

  • The 4th Dimension Interactive page has a new map pack for the Crush Depth submarine mod for Quake II that has improved versions of all the previous C.D. maps...
  • Cached.Net has a new service where players in tournaments can have their own .plan files...
  • There are some more KillCreek images over at The Pr0nshack. Just kidding, no nudity (I'm sure nobody read the last part, they all clicked already)...

Out of the Blue

I think the message boards have been holding up pretty well, furn is back from a brief absence, and I'm hoping to iron out some of the esthetics there with him today, and then we'll be able to turn our attention to some more things on the site. BTW, some off-topic posts were moved to the proper boards, if you are looking for a missing post, it's probably been moved (nothing's been deleted). There are some more projects in the works, but that's all I'll say right now, for the simple reason that I thought a few of them would be together already, so if I announced them when I thought they were about to happen, it would have been premature (so I could announce them now, and still be making excuses for them a month hence). Speaking of which, those disappointed at a lack of trivia today, feel free to mail loony and complain. I'm trying to find a way to make the schedule stick, and maybe some friendly email to greet him in the morning will help (muwahahahah).

Link of the Day: AirToons. Thanks Ant (who's a LoD machine).
Story of the Day: Online Bidders Offer Millions For Human Kidney (thanks Brad Herman). No, really....
