<Impaler> Welcome Scott Miller

<Gunny-eg-> You may begin Scott

<Impaler> Gunny!

<Scott3DR> Hi all. :)
<Scott3DR> I was invited here to talk about Max Payne...
<Scott3DR> and general happenings at 3DR.
<Scott3DR> Might talk about Duke, too.
<Scott3DR> I guess I'll mention a recent game...
<Scott3DR> announcement, though it's still a ways off (year-ish)...
<Scott3DR> We have teamed with n-Space in Florida to develop...
<Scott3DR> DN: Planet of the Babes on the PSX...
<Scott3DR> This game will not be a sequel to Time to Kill, which...
<Scott3DR> really didn't turn out as well as we hoped...
<Scott3DR> Anyway, we're currently developing the story...
<Scott3DR> and so far we're very excited about the new, cool stuff being...
<Scott3DR> thrown into the game, but I don't have many specifics for it now,...

<Impaler> 3D Realms has been regarded as giving the community too little information. We see companies like Valve Software giving tons of information to their fan sites without a media blackout. Why does 3D Realms put their games under a media blackout so often?

<Scott3DR> other than it'll have some parallels to Planet ofthe Apes. :)
<Scott3DR> About our secrecy...
<Scott3DR> It comes down to two basic concerns...
<Scott3DR> [1] We want our games to be played before players...
<Scott3DR> know all the little interesting details...
<Scott3DR> which tend to ruin the experience, much like...
<Scott3DR> some movie trailers show far too much of the movie...
<Scott3DR> I personally didn't like the fact that with Quake 2...
<Scott3DR> the was a screen shot a day...
<Scott3DR> and every model, and weapon, etc. was being ...
<Scott3DR> shown publicly before the game came out...
<Scott3DR> runing the surprise factor when I finally got the full...
<Scott3DR> game.
<Scott3DR> [2]...
<Scott3DR> We prefer not to give our competitors to many ideas. :)
<Scott3DR> Over

<Impaler> Greenbean asks: Is 3drealms going to make a presence at the London Ects?

<Scott3DR> We will not be at ECTS, because...
<Scott3DR> it's just too time consumingto attend these shows...
<Scott3DR> because making demos is actually hurtful to the development...
<Scott3DR> of a game. over

<Impaler> Doms asks: Will 3Drealms ever send oout any screenshots of DNF?

<Scott3DR> We will begin...
<Scott3DR> sending out screen shots and more info...
<Scott3DR> for both Max and DNF early next year--that's...

<Impaler> Basically in time for E3, correct?

<Scott3DR> when we really plan to start lifting the cloak off...
<Scott3DR> of our two games. over

<Impaler> <David> What can you tell us about the technology being developed by Corrine Yu?

<Scott3DR> She's working on tech...
<Scott3DR> that we hope will be relevant in two years...

<Impaler> For Prey, maybe?

<Scott3DR> time, so what she's doing is truly 'out there!'...
<Scott3DR> but I cannot go into too much detail...
<Scott3DR> partly because it's above my head! ;)
<Scott3DR> over

<Impaler> <LonMatero> The game, which marked the beginning of Apogee Software, Kroz, was discontinued earlier this month. Why?

<Scott3DR> I guess Kroz has ended its life...
<Scott3DR> because it's just not worth selling and dealing with the support issues...
<Scott3DR> of such an old DOS game. over

<Impaler> What drives a team like 3D Realms?

<Scott3DR> MONEY!!!!...
<Scott3DR> Not really!...

<Impaler> Hehe

<Scott3DR> We are driven because we just love doing cool stuff...

<Impaler> Does the fact that Duke Nukem Forever is being regarded as the most anticipated title of the year 2000?

<Scott3DR> and that's true of most developers I know. over
<Scott3DR> DNF, I predict, will be the best selling game of 2000...

<Impaler> Amen, Scott

<Scott3DR> What scares us most with DNF...
<Scott3DR> is that we will let down all the DN3D fans...
<Scott3DR> so that's the biggest motivator for us to make the best damn game we can! over

<Impaler> <Postal> Question: How is the general detail level in Duke Nukem Forever (polygon counts, and so on) as compared to Unreal or Unreal Tournament?

<Scott3DR> We have higher poly counts, partly because base systems are getting better...
<Scott3DR> and because we have scaling tech (both upwards and downwards). over

<Impaler> The biggest concern with Unreal is a framerate hit. What are you doing to make sure this doesn't happen?

<Scott3DR> We are rewriting a lot of the Unreal code...
<Scott3DR> and we're designing our levels with more attention paid...
<Scott3DR> to framerate. George Broussard, my partner and ...
<Scott3DR> project leader of DNF, is the King of framerate, and will always...
<Scott3DR> let that be the deciding factor over any other issue...
<Scott3DR> nothing is worse than a slow level. over

<Impaler> <inbored> I know the cinema type view looks sweet, and im sure you guys will have a demo recorder in Max payne, my question is whether you plan on making editable demo movies a feature in the game. For instance, you could change camera angles and that sorta stuff, it would be sweet to make mini movies like that. :)

<Scott3DR> I think we will allow for demos...
<Scott3DR> but I'm not sure -- that's a better question for George, sorry. over

<Gunny-eg-> «Alex» Question: Is Max Payne being released on Dreamcast?

<Scott3DR> Max is being looked...
<Scott3DR> at as a possible console game on several consoles, but...
<Scott3DR> nothing is in stone yet. over.

<Impaler> Your face was scanned in for a character in Max Payne. What's up with that?

<Scott3DR> Turns out I make a great gangsta!...
<Scott3DR> not sure what I think about that. :) But...
<Scott3DR> yes, I and most of the Remedy team have used...
<Scott3DR> their faces as game characters. over

<Impaler> <RaVeN> whats with prey

<Scott3DR> Uh... I thought no Prey questions!

<Scott3DR> Just kidding.
<Scott3DR> Prey...
<Scott3DR> Umm, errr...
<Scott3DR> Well...

<Impaler> You don't have to answer it.

<Scott3DR> It's on hold until we develop new tech. How's that. :) over

<Impaler> The eternal question that will live on forever: <nV-Kango> Question: Are the strippers in DN Forever going to have hi-rez jiggly boobs?

<Scott3DR> Let's all hope so!
<Scott3DR> I think...
<Scott3DR> we'll cross the line a little further in DNF. over

<Impaler> <beatle> Question: Will DNF and/or Prey incorporate the advanced features of the NV10 or Napalm chipsets?
<Scott3DR> Good question, and I don't know for sure...
<Scott3DR> but we are talking to them about stuff like this so we'll...
<Scott3DR> just have to see. My guess is "probably." over

<Gunny-eg-> What kind of min system req are we looking at for Max Payne, and DNF?

<Impaler> <LonMatero> Balls of Steel marked a first for the company where the full version was completed and sold before the release of the shareware version. Was this successful and will you continue this on future games?

<Impaler> Sorry for two questions

<Scott3DR> Specs for both games will likely be...

<Scott3DR> around a P2-260 min, but that's not known for sure yet.
<Scott3DR> Most likely in the future,...
<Scott3DR> our shareware games will appear only a week or two ahead of the retail availability. over
<Scott3DR> Next Q?

<Impaler> «Kegser» Question: Are 3D Realms happy with the way the DNF Project is coming along, and is there anything they would have changed had they known that it would take so long?

<Scott3DR> For DNF...

<Scott3DR> we might not have started with the Quake engine, which simply wasn't able...
<Scott3DR> to handle what we were trying to do...
<Scott3DR> One of the biggest problems...
<Scott3DR> with a super high content game like DNF...
<Scott3DR> is that it takes so long to develop...
<Scott3DR> that you need to really pay attention to advancing tech...
<Scott3DR> which can often make the content worthless. over

<Impaler> <Alex> Question: In Max Payne, are they civilans that you can shoot. Or it is Max and his enemies?

<Scott3DR> There will definitely be civilians in Max...

<Impaler> Didn't know that.

<Scott3DR> and most likely you can kill them (somewhat undecided)...
<Scott3DR> but with negative consequences, such as losing an informant. over

<Impaler> <Seretogis> Question: what sort of multiplayer options are you planning for DNF?

<Scott3DR> We hope that Duke and Max both support...
<Scott3DR> multiplayer at least as well as Q3. over

<Gunny-eg-> <King-Kong> question: will not the netcode in DNF be more like a Quake World setup, or the dreded half life net code

<Scott3DR> I can't say too much about our MP plans because we're cooking up something special. over

<Gunny-eg-> k

<Impaler> <barbarian> Question: Are you doing anything different due to media hype over violent video games?

<Scott3DR> Media hype is not...
<Scott3DR> affecting our game in any way. I think...
<Scott3DR> it'll mostly blow over by the time both come out. over

<Impaler> Do you think that Max Payne is going to be the most violent game -- ever?

<Scott3DR> Max will not be the most violent from a blood...
<Scott3DR> and guts standpoint, but...
<Scott3DR> it might be the game that affects the player the most...
<Scott3DR> because of the importance and realism of the violence. over

<Impaler> <Alex> Question:>Do all of "Max Payne's" level's take place at night? Do any take place during daylight?

<Scott3DR> I'm pretty certain most Max levels take place at night...
<Scott3DR> adding to the mood we're trying to get for this game. over

<Impaler> <KodiaK> Will there be difrent versions of Max Payne for other countries that are rather anal when it comes to violence, Germany and Australia come to mind...

<Scott3DR> We truly HATE making special wimpified versions...
<Scott3DR> of our games for these countries, so we'll try our hardest...
<Scott3DR> to avoid that, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. over

<Impaler> <Greenbean> Question: A.I. wise can we expect to see improvements on current scripting and A.I. routines in either DNF or Max-payne

<Scott3DR> I hope so, and I think so...
<Scott3DR> AI is an area we're trying to think of new approaches to, and...
<Scott3DR> hopefully they'll pan out for us. At worst, we'll see AI at least as...
<Scott3DR> good as H-L's. over

<Impaler> <P4nth3r> Question: Will Max-Paine or DNF be closly related to Kingpin? (i.e. obscenities, women hardly dressed, etc.)?

<Scott3DR> Not really. Kingpin and Max, or Duke are vastly different games...
<Scott3DR> Kingpin is a good game, but Max and DNF are truly shooting for...
<Scott3DR> the stars. over

<Impaler> <LonMatero> About five years ago Apogee was releasing a half dozen games a year. Presently, there are about .5 releases a year. Has this strategy helped the company?

<Scott3DR> Well, back in the early 90's games were a lot cheaper and quicker...
<Scott3DR> to make, and they still sold well. But nowadays...
<Scott3DR> there's so much competition and only the truly AAA games...
<Scott3DR> make the big bucks. The industry has changed and making a LOT...
<Scott3DR> of games is not as smart as making one super great game. over

<Gunny-eg-> <BADGER> Question: How soon do you see more information about the Duke Nukem movie being released? Have you given any thought to a Max Payne movie?

<Scott3DR> A max movie will likely happen...
<Scott3DR> there's been a lot of interest already because of the in-depth...
<Scott3DR> story in Max. As for the Dujke movie...
<Scott3DR> we've been meeting with the script writer a lot recently...
<Scott3DR> and things are rolling very, very nicely...
<Scott3DR> What's taken so long with the Duke movie, in part, is that...
<Scott3DR> we've been very picky about the story, and not just doing a quickie,
<Scott3DR> rip off movie that no one will care about. over

<Impaler> On the movie, have you made any agreements yet with any known movie makers that you can discuss?
<Impaler> for max payne
<Impaler> not duke

<Scott3DR> been contacted by every major studio for the distribution rights,...
<Scott3DR> which will not be signed until much later. over

<Impaler> If the movie script turns into something horrible, will you "can" it before it is released?

<Impaler> <bwernicke> [20:39] <Alex> >danger in making a very cinematic game is that it would be great to look at
<Impaler> <bwernicke> [20:39] <Alex> >and read about (which it is), but boring as hell to play. Do you think this
<Impaler> <bwernicke> [20:39] <Alex> >will be the case with "Max Payne"?
<Impaler> sorry for double q
<Impaler> My fault

<Scott3DR> Yes. We will NOT let a bad Duke movie get released. We'd rather...
<Scott3DR> not have any movie released. We think that Duke movies, if done RIGHT, can...
<Scott3DR> go on and on much like the James Bond movies. over

<Scott3DR> If he's referring to Max...
<Scott3DR> then it will still have as much gameplay as other shooters,...
<Scott3DR> the cinematic stuff is in addition to the action, not in place of it. over
<Scott3DR> I see a lot of questions are being asked about...
<Scott3DR> specific weapons, and enemies, etc. and these are the kind of things...
<Scott3DR> we want to keep under wraps until the release of the games. over

<Gunny-eg-> No problem, we'll try harder to filter thouse out...
<Gunny-eg-> One sec, linking servers

<Scott3DR> Let's see if I can think of anything else...
<Scott3DR> I heard that Ion Storm has cancelled Daikatana...
<Scott3DR> And Camarck is selling id...

<bwernicke> LOL

<Gunny-eg-> There, sorry about that...

<Scott3DR> Please don't believe me! ;)

<Gunny-eg-> Lets continue

<AbeAWAY> And Bill Gates donated Microsoft to me. ;)

<Scott3DR> Qs?

<Gunny-eg-> <BADGER> Question: Duke Nukem 3D has been known to borrow heavily from movies like Army of Darkness. Is there any single movie or media that has been a big influence for DNF?

<Scott3DR> With DNF, we'll borrow from a lot of movies and other entertainment, but...
<Scott3DR> this time we will not rely so much on a single movie to help us...
<Scott3DR> We now have a much better handle with who Duke is, where as before...
<Scott3DR> we were making it up as we went along...
<Scott3DR> and used Army of Darkness a lot more than we should have! ;) over

<Impaler> Sorry, scott
<Impaler> The eternal system crash
<Impaler> <GiGaByTe`T|DoingStuff> Question: Where can I apply for a job at 3drealms? =]

<Scott3DR> Just send me an email, that's the best way! ;) over

<Impaler> <Shield|PoopforSupper> > Question : to me Shadow Warrior didnt do to well , what do u think went wrong with that

<Scott3DR> scottm@3drealms.com
<Scott3DR> Well, SW was actually an external game...
<Scott3DR> that we brought inhouse just to hurry up and finish...
<Scott3DR> since the developers were our friends...
<Scott3DR> That game took way too long to come out, and...
<Scott3DR> was therefore dated. over

<Impaler> What type of a preformance hit will we see with 32-bit rendering?
<Impaler> In both Max and Duke?

<Scott3DR> Hopefully, the 3D cards will be fast enough to make 32-bit rendering...
<Scott3DR> as fast as 16-bit is today. over

<Impaler> Queshtan: Unreal claimed there would be some big ass amazing online community powered by "hyperlinked" levels where you could travel from level to level on servers, and on to other servers, etc... While the ability to DO that was actually in Unreal, it wasn't used nor every became big, nor if used it wouldn't have a "smooth" gameplay feeling to it. Any big internet innovations for DNF that we will hopefully actually see?

<Scott3DR> We have an ace up our sleeze that we cannot mention yet, but I can say...
<Scott3DR> that it will be used! ;) over

<Impaler> <P4nth3r> Question: What card do you think will be needed to correctly handle Max Payne & DNF?

<Scott3DR> Did I say a sleeze!?
<Scott3DR> The King of Spades, baby!
<Scott3DR> Really...
<Scott3DR> I am not sure at this time, probably a Voodoo2 or better. over

<Gunny-eg-> <King-Kong> question: how will 3dreams deal w/ piracy in DNF, will they add items like the secure keys which half life currently uses in corralation w/ won.net

<Scott3DR> We are still pondering piracy, and how to slow it down-- you...
<Scott3DR> can never stop it. over

<Impaler> <Alex> Question: Are you in control of toggling slow motion in Max Payne?

<Scott3DR> Yes, we want to make that a gameplay element, in which there's a trade-off...
<Scott3DR> for going into slo-mo mode, as well as a benefit. over

<Impaler> <Vetek> question: about your ancient Apple II games, were they all lost? And if they weren't...is it possible to get a copy of any of them?

<Scott3DR> I never did any Apple 2 games that were released...
<Scott3DR> I did over 100 IBM PC games in the 80's that were released, though, mostly...
<Scott3DR> on monthly disk mags that used to be around back then. over

<Impaler> <Alex> Question: In Max Payne, will you be able to save the game whenever you want or as soon as you die you have to start over? Also, if you get shot is there a way to heal yourself?

<Scott3DR> You will be able to heal yourself, but only in very realistic ways...
<Scott3DR> As for saving, that will be there, but we'll also...
<Scott3DR> have a mode or two in which saving will only be possible BETWEEN levels, for
<Scott3DR> the really good players. over

<Impaler> Will the voices in Max Payne be real-time recordings or will they be text-based?

<Scott3DR> Real time voices, as in Duke. We might have text as an option, too. over

<Impaler> <Sith> about how many levels are set in stone for DNF for the final release?

<Scott3DR> We're guesstimating around 20 levels, but ya never know. over

<Impaler> <KodiaK> Question: Will there be voice overs during the comic book cinematics or do we just get to read them?

<Scott3DR> High quality levels! :) over

<Impaler> How long are the loading sequences in Max Payne and DNF. Are they quick-loading ala Half-Life?

<Scott3DR> Voice overs, so that the voice actors can set the proper mood. over
<Scott3DR> We hope to have quick loading levels -- that's our goal. over

<Impaler> <P4nth3r> Question: How much room will be required on you HD for DNF & Max-Payne?

<Scott3DR> That's impossible to know this early. ;) over

<Gunny-eg-> Are you adding the ability to tweak the GL graphics in MP/DNF so it will run on slower machines such as a P166 or P200?

<Scott3DR> Hmmm, I'm not sure about tweaking the GL graphics yet. We'll see. over

<Impaler> <NukeDukem> Question: George was tossing around the idea of having Save points throughout the levels, as opposed to saving your game as you please. Is that definately in the game now?

<Scott3DR> Save points is something we're looking into, and we'll know for sure...
<Scott3DR> when we can truly test these things closer to the game's release. over

<Impaler> <CONAN> Question: will DNF have dynamic loading, which loads the levels as yu approach the area instead of when you reach it as to eliminate in-game load times that were present in Half-life?

<Scott3DR> We will not have dynamic loading unless it's put in later, which...
<Scott3DR> I doubt because currently the load times are very short. over

<Impaler> <KodiaK> Is there a voice actor fo Payne yet? And if not, who would you like to see do the voice over for payne. A well known star or a nobody?

<Scott3DR> We already have most the voice talent in place for Max, including a very...
<Scott3DR> good voice guy for Max himself. over

<Impaler> <P4nth3r> Question: Will there be Environmental Audio support in DNF or Max-Paine?

<Scott3DR> Not sure what EA support is, sorry. over
<kewl> EAX for SBlive I believe

<Impaler> All right everyone. That's it for tonight. Be sure to check out http://www.head-trauma.com and http://www.houseofpayne.com for all your Max Payne news and http://www.dukeworld.com for all your Duke news!

<Gunny-eg-> Thank you very much for coming Scott
<Impaler> Thank you, Scott!

<Scott3DR> Thanks for coming everyone. :)

<Gunny-eg-> We apritiate your detication to the gaming community

<Impaler> After chat festivities will continue.

<kewl> scooott noo..

<Scott3DR> Duke and Max will be worth the wait... I promise. ;)

<Impaler> Defiently

<Gunny-eg-> :)

<kewl> defiant, haha..
