Pachter: Activision Should Charge for CoD Multiplayer

IndustryGamers quotes occasionally accurate industry analyst Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan Securities on declines in the gaming market. While many blame sagging game sales on a rough economy, Pachter believes the problem is gamers playing multiplayer games for free (which it seems they were also doing when game sales were more robust). He says all the time players spend on MW2, Halo, L4D, etc., "has sucked the available time away from what otherwise would be spent playing newly purchased games." Ignoring the failure of games like Hellgate: London that attempted to charge a premium for multiplayer play, he says this is what Activision must now do for the next CoD game: "We think that it is incumbent upon Activision, with the most popular multiplayer game, to take the first step to address monetization of multiplayer. It is too early to tell whether that will be a monthly subscription, tournament entry fees, microtransaction fees, or a combination of all three, but we expect to see the company take some action by year-end, when Call of Duty Black Ops launches."
