Total Entertainment Network(TM) Drops Subscription Requirement for AMD(TM) Professional Gamers' League(TM) $9.95 League Entry Fee Will Provide Up To 3 Months of Access to TEN-Hosted PGL SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Total Entertainment Network (TEN(TM)) today announced that it will not require a TEN subscription for the new AMD(TM) Professional Gamers' League(TM)(PGL(TM)), the first pro sports league for computer game players (see 10/15 press release). Instead, gamers who are not TEN subscribers can pay a one-time entry fee of $9.95 for an entire three-month season, giving them access to PGL-specific games and a shot at the $62,500 in cash and prizes available in Season 1. With the TEN service as the host network of the PGL, the league will waive the entry fee for current TEN subscribers. The PGL, which has already secured more than $1.5 million in sponsorship funding, will award more than $250,000 in cash and prizes in its first year. The two game categories in the PGL's inaugural season will be action (represented by id Software's mega-hit Quake(TM)) and strategy (Westwood Studio's best-selling Command & Conquer: Red Alert). New games and game categories will be added in subsequent seasons. The new $9.95 entry fee will allow access only to PGL-specific titles, and must be renewed for each three-month PGL season. With the addition of a new game category planned for each successive PGL season, the entry fee will provide access to more games/game genres over time. "A entry fee of some kind is required to participate in league competition, for a number of reasons," said Joe Perez, manager of league operations and co-founder of the PGL. "First, it ensures that everyone registering for the league is serious; if we made participating completely free, we'd be overrun with 'tire-kickers' and other less-than-committed people piling into the PGL arenas, detracting from the experience that real gamers expect. Second, the human and technology resources required to establish and maintain the PGL are significant; we're purchasing a number of new servers and hiring a dedicated staff to support league operations. The PGL entry fee will help defray some of those costs." "$10 for a chance at $10,000? That's a no-brainer," said Rui Magro, an online game fan and one of the top Red Alert players in North America. "Even if I finish fourth in the RA division of the league, I stand to win several thousand dollars in cash and prizes; and the chance to play against the best strategy gamers in the country is worth the price of admission all by itself."
