Sam & Max Season Two DVD Nears [July 23, 2008, 1:41 pm ET] - 2 Comments

Telltale Games announces the Sam & Max Season Two Collector's DVD will be available next month, overcoming one of the paradoxes of the typical collector's edition by offering it for the cost of shipping and handling to customers who have already purchased the Season Two downloads:

SAN RAFAEL, CA, July 23, 2008 – Interactive entertainment pioneer Telltale, Inc. is announcing that the Collector's DVD for the acclaimed game series Sam & Max Season Two is available for ordering today. Telltale has given the second season of "gaming's first sitcom" the premium boxed-set treatment that has become common for television favorites, with behind-the-scenes extras and loads of special features. Telltale is also introducing new merchandise today to celebrate the release, including a signed commemorative print, a 2-CD Season Two soundtrack, and several special bundle offers.

Sam & Max Season Two has garnered critical acclaim from numerous sources, including two Editor's Choice awards from PC Gamer and positive reviews from mainstream press ranging from the New York Times to Playboy. The series is based on comic book characters created by Eisner award-winning cartoonist Steve Purcell, who has been publishing stories starring the offbeat dog and "rabbity-thing" crime-fighting duo for over twenty years. Purcell contributed an original painting inspired by the games' events to serve as the cover for this unique DVD release.

In addition to all five games from the award-winning episodic series, which play on a PC with a DVD-ROM drive, the Season Two Collector's DVD contains hours of region-free video viewable on a PC or in any standard DVD player. Special features on the disc include game footage reels with audio commentary from the development team, the 20-minute holiday video feature "Sam & Max Nearly Save Christmas," outtakes and promotional trailers, concept art, desktop wallpapers, and an MP3 soundtrack sampler. Samples of the video content can be viewed at http://www.telltalegames.com/samandmax.

Customers who already bought the downloadable Sam & Max Season Two set from Telltale can get the Collector's DVD for just the cost of shipping and handling. For new customers, the Season Two Collector's DVD sells for $34.95 and comes with free downloadable copies of the games. The DVD is expected to start shipping in August. NAMCO's Hellgate Non-Announcement [July 23, 2008, 10:31 am ET] - 13 Comments

A post to an enormous thread on the Hellgate: London Forums by publisher NAMCO BANDAI indicates they are currently keeping things alive on the Hellgate: London servers (thanks Strategy Informer). And while they are not making any official announcements about the status of the action/RPG from troubled developer Flagship Studios, it sounds like they are preparing to announce something, so speculate away:

Hello Hellgaters,

I know everyone is looking for an announcement, and we'd love to make one -- but right now, many things are in flux and we don't have all the information yet. As soon as we do, we'll post here on the forums, on the website, and anywhere else we can find you.

In the short term, please do not worry. The game is up, the servers are not going away in the short term and any major changes to status will be communicated in advance.

I'd like to ask for your patience as we try to figure it all out and chart a new course. We value your community, your commitment, and your passion for Hellgate and we will make sure that any solution that we architect will support all of you as best as we are able.

Thanks again. We hope to have a real announcement shortly.

Age Of Conan Patch Plans [July 23, 2008, 10:31 am ET] - 20 Comments

The Age Of Conan: Hyborian Adventures Website has details on a upcoming updates for Funcom's MMORPG (thanks Voodoo Extreme):

We want to give you a short outlook about things to come in both this week's update as well as the plans for the update scheduled for next week. This week’s update will be a smaller maintenance one in order for us to tidy up a couple of the issues while we work on the next larger update which is currently being tested and hopefully will be ready for the live servers next week.

Our tech team is hard at work to investigate about memory leaks (like for example the issue with your map going gray) and they have made inroads on those issues, and we have found and resolved a couple with this weeks update. This is of course a process that does not end now - on the contrary. The team will keep on working hard to find the leaks that are still there so we can expect more of them to be resolved in updates to come. Finding such memory leaks is quite a tricky thing but we are making progress and the tech team is keeping the focus on this issue.

Also fixed should be the issues from last week was the behavior of caster pets as some of them were in fact quite passive after they had been summoned. Our developers have found the source of that issue and the fix for this is getting tested by QA so this week's update should resolve this issue.

Lastly with this week’s update we wanted to give you all the opportunity to revise your feat points given the recent changes to the abilities and feat trees. What we have done is that the counter of how many times a character has reset his feats will be set to zero so the next reset will be viewed as being the first one in terms of money it will cost, as if you had never reset any feats before.

As we mentioned at the top, the update planned for next week should include some additions and changes that our community has been looking forward to (beside the usual fixes and updates).

Quantum of Solace Game to Not Suck [July 23, 2008, 10:31 am ET] - 4 Comments

MCV has a quote from developer Treyarch saying that their Quantum of Solace game should offer a quantum of solace to James Bond fans disappointed in the quality of recent games starring the super-spy. They lay the blame for the shortcomings of recent Bond games on former license holder Electronic Arts, contradictorily referring to the new game as a chance to make a "first impression":

“We’re not trying to fix anything EA did wrong, because that’s just what they did,” explained Quantum of Solace’s executive producer Garrett Young (pictured). “I’m sure the series pissed off a lot of gamers over the last few years as the games started to go downhill, but we have no control over that.”

“The pressure we feel is more about launching this franchise in the right way. We know that you only have one chance to make a really great first impression, and this is it.”

Out of the Blue [July 23, 2008, 10:05 am ET] - 15 Comments

My sleep last night was disturbed by a foot cramp. This is no big deal and easy enough to deal with on one occasion, but it is certainly more than enough to repeatedly wake one up. I don't know what the deal is with that Restless Legs Syndrome, and I know people love making fun of the ads for drugs fort that one, but I can see how an ongoing issue of this sort could be a big problem for folks.

NYS Game Law Signed [July 22, 2008, 8:42 pm ET] - 11 Comments

GamePolitics reports New York State Governor David Paterson has signed into law a bill to "ensure the State will explore the negative effects of violent video games." Of course it would seem that whatever exploration is involved has been done already, as they don't seem to grant the possibility that they would find positive effects. The law apparently has no real effect, so the ESA may not choose to challenge this in court. TV Debate on New York Video Game Law offers further discussion of all this.

DirectX 11 Announced, Compatible with DirectX 10 Hardware [July 22, 2008, 4:33 pm ET] - 68 Comments

This Gamasutra article, also from Microsoft's Gamefest 2008 developer conference in Seattle has word that DirectX 11 has been announced, though no specific release date is specified. Unsurprisingly, this will be for Windows Vista and "future versions of Windows," but not Windows XP. The good news is that there will be no new hardware requirements, so DirectX 10 hardware should be DirectX 11 compatible.

Games for Windows Marketplace Coming, LIVE Gold Fees Going [July 22, 2008, 4:01 pm ET] - 13 Comments

Gamasutra has word that Microsoft has announced plans to introduce a Games for Windows marketplace similar to the Xbox LIVE marketplace. They also announce plans to offer a less console-centric Games for Windows LIVE service and confirm that they will be dropping the premium subscription fee the service carried for "Gold" multiplayer matchmaking that was a sticking point for so many. Here's a quote on the changes from Microsoft's Chris Satchell: "The first UI was good but it was too console-centric. It wasn't really what Windows gamers wanted. We have a new UI that's consistent with the way Windows gamers want to interact. It's free to you as a developer, and we're reducing the technical requirements. I believe, from hereon, Games for Windows Live is going to take off."

DC Universe Online Q&A [July 22, 2008, 09:33 am ET] - 10 Comments

SOE Austin’s John Blakely Talks DC Universe Online on The MMO Gamer is a Q&A about SOE's upcoming superhero MMORPG. The conversation is available as an audio recording, and has also been transcribed into text. Along the way, SOE Austin's John Blakely chooses to point out this isn't your parent's MMORPG: "This isn’t your mother or father’s MMO. Those things work for the fantasy setting, but felt to really deliver on that superhero power fantasy we had to deliver it in the game first in that moment-to-moment experience. This is an action game. Skill does count. There are no die rolls, you have to aim, and shoot, and hit. That’s really important to how we communicate that."
