Gametrailers offers
a new movie taken from a demonstration of Mirror's Edge at the Penny
Arcade Expo. The clip conveys some off the open-ended aspects of the design of
DICE's upcoming first-person action game and how multiple paths are available to
achieve the game's goals, as well as how the game assists you in finding these
paths. The narrated clip also demonstrates combat in the game, including the
melee moves of Faith, your character, as well as how she can disarm opponents
and even use their weapons against them.

Good to hear that the game isn't completely automated. As for difficulty, guess I'll have to wait until I play it before I can judge fairly.

It isn't difficult because of the controls, it's difficult because the game absolutely does *NOT* do everything automatically for you.
You need to time button presses very carefully to grab onto ledges and pipes. You need to time all of your jumps - there isn't any auto-correction here. You need to time slides or rolls for when you land. Even the hand-to-hand combat and weapon disarming requires quite a bit of timing and skill. Cool. Maybe this will be worth a shot after all I'm glad, because it looked like it could be fun if they didn't go the AC route.

lol dude, I was at PAX all 3 days of the weekend and I can guarantee you that the vast, vast majority of people there were hardcore gamers. It's a video gaming convention, first and foremost. 90%+ of the panels are video-game related, and even the panels that sound the lamest had massive audiences.
Yeah, there's a room for tabletop gaming, but that room is a relatively small one, across the street in an entirely different building. In the main building area, there were massive rooms for PC and Console free-play, and the main exibition hall was filled to the brim with hundreds of games, and tens of thousands of hardcore videogame fans.
As someone who played Mirror's Edge, it's patently obvious why it might be "painful" to watch someone else playing it - that's what I thought about the game too, thinking everyone else sucked, until I played it for myself. It isn't difficult because of the controls, it's difficult because the game absolutely does *NOT* do everything automatically for you.

Even with the game giving you an idea of where to go - that's optional, by the way - executing what you have to do is far harder than figuring out where you have to go.

Don't mean you're a good gamer, but you sure as hell are part of the hardcore gaming crowd. That's where our definitions of "hardcore" differ. To me, a prerequisite of being a hardcore gamer is that you are good at games.

Dude, I was so with you on everything you said....and then:
"In addition, being that PAX isn't strictly a videogame convention, it's also safe to assume that many of the people attending were not hardcore gamers." Penny Arcade...I'd say that reading a webcomic devated to gaming almost makes you the textbook definition of a hardcore gamer. Especially if you go to PAX too.

On a side note, the whole concept of skill is inherently subjective and as such, scientific fact doesn't really apply. I'm an average Q3 player (at best) and if I play against a newb, I'll look like a really good Q3 player. However, if I play against Zero4 or cypherr, I'll look like a total newb. Skill is entirely relative. So true...
Now give me your xfire and I'll make you look like a newb.

Any particular reason why? I'd think mouselook would make the game a lot easier. True, but it's tuned to play with a controller fine. I hate playing standard FPSs with a gamepad, but this game has no emphasis on shooting whatsoever, so it doesn't bother me. Analog movement helps too.
Also, XBox Live integration for leaderboards and (*blush*) achievements will be nice too.
The PC version isn't GFW or GFW Live, so I dunno if it'll get all those leaderboards and such. It's possible, hopefully it happens. The game is built with UE3, so that could mean user created content too.

Definitely a game I'd rather play on my 360 or PS3 though, unless I find it for $30 or so on PC. Any particular reason why? I'd think mouselook would make the game a lot easier.

I got to play this game at PAX and was plesently surprised. It plays really well, looks beautiful, and seems like it'll have a lot of replay value - including online leaderboards for time trials, racing against ghosts downloaded from other people, etc.

Sounds like a pretty ignorant comment to me. You have some sort of scientific fact on this? Sure. You said yourself that it was painful to watch people play the Mirror's Edge demo. If people have trouble with that, given that the game tells you exactly where to go and the controls consist of three buttons, I think that says it all.
However, if you consider the general trend of games being dumbed down and how these games tend to sell more than the deep, challenging games, I think it's safe to assume that the majority of gamers (and I use the term loosely) do indeed suck at games.
In addition, being that PAX isn't strictly a videogame convention, it's also safe to assume that many of the people attending were not hardcore gamers.

PHJF, yes, but things you can interact with are highlighted in red. People were having to stop look around to see where they should jump from, missing jumps and having to climb back up if they managed to not die from the fall, people were having trouble running across the pipe without falling, missing the timing on kicking open the door - so they just run right into it, having to stop and look around to see which spot you are to jump from, etc.
To sum it up, the game doesnt flow like you see in the videos unless you already know exactly what you are doing and where you are going. ---------------------------------------------------- Trackmania United Forever, Bionic Commando Rearmed, GRID

No doubt that first-time players won't be able to breeze through the levels as depicted in the trailers... but also keep in mind that many of the people who attend these conventions also tend to suck at games.

It was painful to watch people playing Mirrors Edge at PAX. If you dont know the map, things dont flow anywhere near as well as what you saw in the videos. Seems like it would flow better as you memorize the map and actions required. Seeing as I generally play through games once, Im ratehr sceptical on this now.

Well I actually enjoyed it in AC, cause it was more about picking a correct route then timing/etc that I hated in the Prince of Persia games That's like saying you enjoy shooters but you hate having to aim...

Um, how is this anything like the shittiness that was AC? Mirror's Edge has a few automated actions, like grabbing onto a zipline or pulling yourself up a ledge. You still have to time your jumps, slides, 180 rotations, etc. Granted, I don't think the platforming in ME will be able to match PoP or TR, but from what I've seen and read, it definitely won't be an AC snoozefest.
