The Team Fortress 2 Website has an interesting look at the way the character design for the Demoman character evolved over the course of development of the teamplay shooter sequel. They describe a brief period they were looking to achieve a Claymation look for the game as well as a number of different potential designs that fit the stylized look TF2 eventually took on.
