No Cross-platform The Agency Gameplay

Eurogamer reports from SOE's Fan Faire in sunny Las Vegas that designer Hal Milton tells them cross-platform play between the PC and PS3 editions of The Agency will not be possible. He admits there is no technological reason for this, but that they do not feel they will be able to convince owners of either platform that gameplay is fairly balanced, citing the experience some of their team members had with attempting to balance gameplay between the Xbox 360 and PC editions of Shadowrun. They did later suggest it will be possible to use the same account for both the PC and PS3 editions of The Agency, but that doesn't seem to offer much, since: "you will not be able to pick up on PS3 where you left off on the PC version or vice versa, and two different copies of the game will be required."

You can actually read website text on your TV from several feet away? I'm assuming you have to increase the font size?
1360x768 resolution works just fine and is very clear and easily readable from 8 feet away without changing any font setting in Windows. With the Samsung at 1920x1080 it was too small and I did have to screw around with the font sizes (which broke webpages), but then I changed to the Sony Bravia and used 1360x768.

Citing wireless as not being reliable in 2008 is just plain naive.
Good thing I never cited that.

Welcome to the modern world, where you can have a PC hooked up to large screen LCD's.
Let me elaborate: You can actually read website text on your TV from several feet away? I'm assuming you have to increase the font size? Seems to me it would just be easier to read it on a monitor.

For someone that bashes consoles and sings the PC's praises you sure don't seem to keep up with the Joneses.
Why would I, as a PC-only gamer, care about hooking up my system to a TV? I have a comfortable chair and a good desk so I'm set.

Explain to me why everyone even wants crossplay to work? I mean whats the point? I dont want to touch any of these consolitis games anyway and even if I did, why would I want to play against the console crowd? To prove that mouse + keyboard are way better? I already know that. To boost my ego? I have no need for that....so what else is there?

That's all well and good except it doesn't change the fact that data traveling through a wire is more reliable than data traveling through the air.
Yea and going to a bank teller is more reliable than using an ATM. Doesn't mean there are some sort of mass problem with ATMs that prevent your transactions from taking place.

Citing wireless as not being reliable in 2008 is just plain naive.

...you browse the web using your TV?

These photos are from January or so, I've since put in this entertainment unit.

40" Sony Bravia W3000

Excellent TV, highly recommend it. I had bought a Samsung 40" LNT4061 - problem with this was it did not do any widescreen resolutions except 1920x1080, and error'd to a black screen when it didn't like something.

The Sony W3000 does 1360x768 as well as 1920x1080 and every other resolution without error. 1360x768 being obviously more ideal to keep playing newer games at good frames-per-sec.

The only other option is to continue to keep PC and console players separate. It's pretty much that simple.
I'm fine with that option. Consoles and PCs will never be the same, no matter what overlap there is.

You know how many wireless issues I've had with my stuff? Zero. The only thing would be cat hair in the laser, which is just as likely to happen to a corded laser.

NOTE: Typing this from the comfort of my couch in front of a 40" tv, with a wireless Logitech keyboard, G7 wireless mouse, with a 2nd Logitech keyboard nearby for use with the PS3 when needed and also 2 PS3 controllers, and a wireless 360 controller.

I wish it were that easy. I can "just" invest in a $70 DECENT wireless keyboard and mouse set, or I can "just" run 25 feet of USB cables across my floor "just" so I can have an even playing ground?

Terrible idea. No one would accept that as a solution, nor should they.
Unless they come up with some better controller than the gamepad and make it standard, then we're always going to see these kinds of problems. Allowing keyboard/mouse or gamepad controllers for both console and PC is really the only way to make this work. You don't have to buy them. You don't have to play against other people either. It's just an option and is the only way to offer the ability to pit PC players against console players in a way that even has the possibility of being fair. The only other option is to continue to keep PC and console players separate. It's pretty much that simple.

Corded peripherals will always be more reliable than wireless.

You also don't have to worry about replacing or recharging batteries.
Most of Logitechs wireless offer quick change Lithium Ion batteries. The keyboards, 2 AA that last for at least 8 months to a year with heavy use...maybe even longer as I havent tracked it.

If the seconds it takes to swap the batteries is an inconvenience, you shouldn't even bother using a PC as it takes longer for a game to load, or to install drivers.

I've been using wireless mice & keyboards for at least 6 or 7 years now. If you want to be cheap and stick with a $10 corded mice & keyboard, fine. But stop dragging down the rest of the world from wanting some standardized technology being utilized and being more living room friendly.
It's nothing to do with cheap, but it's more to do with quality. I use a G15, and an MX518. While the former has obvious dubious usefulness, there's little denying that the MX518 is still one of the best mice on the market today. I've bought 2 so far, and after trying the terrible mess that is laser mice, I intend on buying 2 more when they break some years in the future.

Even if I had such a thing, mind you, I still wouldn't want to sit on my recliner with a keyboard and mouse. What a complete mess that would be.

Wireless more or less sucks for anything but complete newbie gaming. I still use a BT mouse on my EeePC though.

Wireless IR and Bluetooth for the win. Complaining about wires is 5 years ago. Keyboards, mice, gamepads, internet...all wireless. Welcomes to 2008!

As for The Agency, I don't know yet. I've been off MMO's for awhile now. I definitely won't consider it for the PS3 now though, because of the M&K thing. But it will have to be really good for me to get it on PC.

Whining about keyboard and mouse is no different than if you played fighting games with a regular console controller and complained that people who use special arcade-style fighting joysticks have an advantage.

Yeah, "even" playing ground.

When a console player can do

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlZhDOqlPTc

without "intelligent" interaction (ie. the game playing for you) then you'll be on even ground.

G'luck doing something like that with a six-axis...

Terrible idea. No one would accept that as a solution, nor should they.
Porting simplified UI's and console menus to PC games was a terrible idea as well. You'll except a lot when you don't have any other choice = P

What I can't figure is why they don't just release keyboards and mice for consoles...

They use USB anyway, would be fairly easy to just add a mouse/keyboard to the package, rejig the embedded OS to recognise them, add a UI desktop so they could browse the web, download their photos etc on the built in hard drive, burn CD's/DVD's, print and do all sor...

Oh hang on, that's a FUCKING PC...

They'll keep this bullshit perpetuated to try and cash in on the console factor. Fact is, with HDTV and consoles sporting much of the same tech as PC's, it's a no brainer to make them in to a mini PC with standardised hardware... That way, you only need to write one version of a game and have a locked graphics profile for the console version...

Booyah, I just saved PC gaming and removed millions of dollars in rework porting console titles to PC...

Marketing > common sense apparently...

Why don't they just support both console controller and keyboard/mouse on both platforms? Then nobody can complain that one platform has a control advantage. If you are playing on a PS3, and you think that the keyboard and mouse has an advantage then you can just connect a keyboard and mouse and use that instead. If you're playing on the PC and think that a console controller has an advatage, then you can connect a console controller to your PC.

Yea you cant have cross play in a FPS environment without some serious hackjob work. Look at Shadowrun. There were all kinds of limitations for PC users and all kinds of benefits for console users. Sticky aiming, etc.

Everyone knows, in a FPS type environment, a controller simply cannot compete. Since The Agency is a MMOFPS, I knew there wouldn't be any cross-platform play unless they utterly hacked up the gameplay, which would mean it wouldn't sell for shit in the end.

The funniest part is, I don't even know what he's trying to say. How does not allowing cross-platform play amount to fucking "us and our industry?" They could have not designed for the PS3 at all and PC users would be no worse off (and vice versa).

3. Re: No subject Aug 17, 2008, 16:36 Ozmodan

Wow no kidding. Pretty obvious that limiting play on a console to keyboard and mouse would really limit sales of the game on the console, hence they will make the controls for the PS3 for the controller. Anyone knows that mouse and keyboard trumps a controller any day in the week. Would make pvp between them really onesided.

Next time think before you rant lol.
