EA Giving up "Crappy" Licensed Games

A Q&A on MTV Multiplayer with John Riccitiello is a frank discussion of EA games with the EA CEO, who continues to speak of elevating the quality of their output, this time specifically criticizing "crappy" licensed games, saying: "I think what redeems our industry is quality, and I think we take a step back every time we take a license and exploit it with a crappy game. That’s not what we’re about." This is not to say they are giving up licensed games (just the crappy ones), but it does illustrate a renewed emphasis on new IPs:

Frankly I think that a lot of the intellectual property we create are better than the licenses. That doesn’t mean there isn’t room for great licenses. We’ve had a 20-year partnership with the NFL. We’re incredibly proud of that. A 15-ish year partnership with the NBA. NHL, etc. But also we partner with J.K. Rowling and Warner Brothers in bringing over the Harry Potter games to market and a great partnership with Hasbro — a lot of new stuff this year for the more casual consumer. There’s room for both. I think what you’re noticing is that in years gone by we haven’t had as many great, original intellectual properties. There’s a lot more of that this year from EA and I think from here forward.

Let me correct that.

I think what you're noticing is that in years gone by we've canceled many great, original intellectual properties.

He's just spewing off crap because he full well knows that EA has the worst name in the industry and he's trying to damage control that without actually having to do a single fucking thing he promises.
Change takes time. EA has identified many of the things that give them a bad name and have said they intend to fix them - that's a start. The formation of an ongoing support team for the C&C series is an example of that change, though it's still far too early to see whether it will bring any improvements. At the same time we see EA slandering Take-Two in public to get a better price - that's an example of why EA is hated. Clearly they have a LONG way to go.

The reality is it's only really in hindsight that we can identify a pattern and it's still too soon to tell; EA might be improving or might be further bastardising the industry... we'll have to wait and see.

but around a year ago when Riccitiello starting being so openly candid and honest about all the things that made me boycott them in the first place, it went a long way towards restoring my respect.

Really? Do you also believe everything a politician tells you? You may note that for all of riccitieisielelloooieito's words, they haven't actually changed one fucking iota of their operating practices.

Give up the DRM, poor post-release support, buggy games, and mediocrity you're known for, and I might give a shit.

I get the impression that this Riccitiello guy hired someone to find out why EA is hated by hardcore gamers, then gives interviews based on those talking points... no that he really means it.

Haven't we all heard time and again about how hardcore gamers do NOT dictate the market? Yet all of his talking points are directed at hardcore gamers. Why go on this campaign to drum up the support of hardcore gamers when EA and others have clearly stated that we make up a small "buying power" segment?

Something doesn't add up?

I dunno, considering the number of games they've ruined with no reason...

I boycotted EA years ago but around a year ago when Riccitiello starting being so openly candid and honest about all the things that made me boycott them in the first place, it went a long way towards restoring my respect.

Ultimately though the words will need to be backed by quality games. Time will tell.

It's because they bought out all the studios with talent and have assimilated them into their mediocre collective.

All talk. Prove it with quality games. Look at your metacritic and gamerankings scores.
