SOE
Austin’s John Blakely Talks DC Universe Online on The MMO Gamer is a Q&A
about SOE's upcoming superhero MMORPG. The conversation is available as an audio
recording, and has also been transcribed into text. Along the way, SOE Austin's
John Blakely chooses to point out this isn't your parent's MMORPG: "This isn’t
your mother or father’s MMO. Those things work for the fantasy setting, but felt
to really deliver on that superhero power fantasy we had to deliver it in the
game first in that moment-to-moment experience. This is an action game. Skill
does count. There are no die rolls, you have to aim, and shoot, and hit. That’s
really important to how we communicate that."

It would be awesome if they could bring the comic books to "life" in a video game.. but I fear that they won't. Also, so I get to see these heroes and superheroes.. and.. what?
I get the feeling that Champions Online and DC Universe are both going to be as shallow as CoH where the game basically revolved around creating your characters costume and his or her backstory.
I guess I'm spoiled by WoW and everything there is to do in that game. Sure it wasn't in the game at launch, but when you've had years to come up with a competitive MMO to play in the same market as WoW.. you gotta look at what they bring to the table and say that you're going to have as much, if not more.

I'm still waiting for some info on what the game has that would make me want to play it for lengths at a time.. or over a decent period of time.
Where's the depth? http://pc.ign.com/articles/891/891471p1.html
From that article it sounds like their big hook is the DC characters.
IGN: What is DCUO bringing to MMOs that we haven't seen before?
John Blakely: Well, first of all, there's the DC Universe -- Gotham, Metropolis, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Joker, Penguin, Solomon Grundy -- a whole host of heroes, a whole bunch of villains. Over 150 of these all penned by Jim Lee and his team at Wildstorm Entertainment -- they have put together probably over 1,500 concepts to kind of layout the official DCU, what it looks like. There's an official map of Metropolis now. There's an official map of Gotham. We're building those in the Unreal 3 engine. It's going to be shipped on the PlayStation 3 and on the PC so it'll be a console experience, and a big thing on that is moment to moment, this is an action game. First and foremost, superhero game and then we're layering in the pieces you'd expect with an MMO -- character progression, end games, rule the world or save the world, levels, loot, character-invested storylines like your hero's journey or your villain's journey. We're really trying to put all of those pieces together as you'd expect in an MMO but moment to moment it really is an action game like you'd play on your console. I am interested in seeing Gotham and Metropolis in an MMO, and the bat cave, and such. I think, done correctly, that could be very cool... But I don't think these guys are going to "do it correctly".

At this point, I consider SoE to be a budget developer.
It has a decent product in the form of the "Station Access." For $30 a month, you can play an eclectic range of MMOGs. It's a gift that keeps on giving, too, as SoE keeps on purchasing and running MMOGs into the ground.
SOE HAS THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE THAT I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED. It ignores its end users, it's dishonest, it makes minimal effort, and it has no problem screwing people over. Poor 'ol Reinhardt - he turned into quite the SoE tool Meanwhile, look at the upcoming products it keeps on hyping. Either SoE is not serious about making a deep, robust MMOG or, as I think, it simply lacks the ability to do so. One year, two years, three years from now - will there be any SoE MMOG dominating the market? Or even receiving high acclaim? Or will we just have more junk to toss into the Station Access grouping?
Not delving into the SWG debacle, Ray

It just wasn't the Combat Enhancement patch it was the NGE that also followed it (in fact was announced the day AFTER their last expansion), had major community people come see the NGE and had them sign major NDA's, and a few months earlier at Sony's Fanfest mentioned NOTHING about the NGE and showed off 'something coming soon' that has yet to show up in the game. Or lets talk about how if your an alien type (wookie in my case) all your racial abilities are gone and you can't equip most of the good stuff in the game. Even if you can equip it it either makes the majority of your outfit disappear (and look nakkid). It wasn't just one thing Cabalist, it was several things within 6 months that was kept from the community, and in the end killed the game for most. And I won't even mention Vanguard.
As with DC Universe Online, with Jim Lee running the show I have higher hopes for it being true to the DC Comic 'way'.

give it half a chance jeez.
Please tell me the worst MMO disaster SONY has. SWG combat revamp? thats it. Every other game is pretty solid (EQ1 EQ2) or they bought the rights are trying to FIX IT. (Matrix, Vanguard)

If by "winner" I mean epic failure, then yes. SOE should be proud, though, their MMO track record is as good as the GW Bush administration's...
