The Microsoft E3 press conference is currently underway, and so far they've
rolled out a look at Fallout 3, saying the post-apocalyptic sequel will
be followed by "substantial" downloadable content for the game that will be
exclusive to Xbox LIVE and Games For Windows. Todd Howard's demo of the game
shows off the ability to choose a stealthier or more straightforward approach to
combat, as well as a bit on the moral choices you'll be faced with. Jun Takeuchi
then demoed Resident Evil 5, which will be the first RE game to appear on
a Microsoft System. Word is to expect a simultaneous worldwide release for all
platforms on March 13, 2009 (except Japan, where it will appear a day earlier).
This was followed by Peter Molyneux taking the stage, starting off by declaring
Fable 2 "is finished!" He then showed off the game's intro, quickly falls
back on old habits talking about "you've never experienced anything like" the
game's pet feature, and shows off a new simplified way to initiate cooperative
multiplayer play in the game. In a bit of a surprise considering the
presentation began with the declaration that Fable 2 "is finished," Peter
concludes saying the game will be released in October.

Well since the ign preview and the gamespy preview just stopped short of calling Fallout 3 "oblivion with guns," one has to look and see what kind of downloadable content was available for oblivion.
While everyone loves to harp on the stupidity that was horse armor, Bethesda actually did release some pretty cool downloadable content. Mehrune's Razor - while a ridiculously overpowered weapon - also had a really cool dungeon that came with it. The Wizard tower was a very nice expansion and ,apart from the location, the fighter's keep was also solid.
Ofcourse, Mass Effect was also going to get "tons" of downloadable content, and so far that's been one 90 minute world. And the less said about the GTA4 downloadable non-content, the better.

Don't recall saying 'turn based' but by your standard, the first two Legend of Zelda games are RPGs instead of Adventure games. In fact, you could even say DooM was an RPG using your criteria, so maybe we should be a little more specific when defining our genres.
You didn't say turned based, but it's the same argument. Diablo's not an RPG, Fable's not an RPG, etc...
And Zelda and Doom wouldn't be RPG's by the criteria I stated. You get new equipment in those games, but you don't level up, have stats that progress, choose a class, choose an alignment, or create your own identity for yourself throughout the game... so none of the criteria I mentioned.
Fable's an RPG in as much a sense as Knights of the Old Republic, which is to say as much as any computer game ever made. You can define that type of character you play, you progress in both gear and statistics while you level, you can decide if you want to be good or evil based on your actions, and your actions affect the overall story and the NPC's within it.
Part of the charm of Fable in general is that you really get to define the role your character plays in the story; it's totally up to the player who your character is, or at least as much as it can be in a computer RPG.
The only reason I could see that anyone would say it's not an RPG is because it plays like an action game (i.e, it's not turn based). A session of D&D with a premade character isn't any more RPG than Fable is... just not sure what else you want a game to do to be an RPG.

That's what System Shock 2 and Deus Ex are usually pigeonholed as, right?
I don't think "hack and slash adventure" is any kind of accepted genre, anyways. Is this where Diablo would go? Or is it supposed to be more like Quest for Glory?

I wouldn't go so far as to call Doom an RPG. On the other, I wouldn't exactly call Fable an RPG either. I'd call it an action game with RPG aspects.

Duh, you play the ROLE of the Doom marine. You start at level 1 with the pistol, but then you level up when you get the shotgun, and again with the chaingun. You can choose to shoot some imps or not which gives you consequences of changing the score at the end. Except no one who's not trying to force a definition into something else would call that leveling up. They would call that picking up items.

As much as you can in Fable, yes. That is to say, virtually not at all.
Fable is not an RPG.

Fable was not in any way an RPG. It was a typical hack and slash adventure game.
You can level up, improve in stats, choose what type of class you want to be, choose your alignment, and create a unique identity for yourself based on decisions made through the game. How is that not a role-playing game?
RPG's don't have to be turn based to be RPG's.

When I saw "is Finished" I was hoping they had canned it.
Haha, I lol'd irl.
I stopped playing Fable when I realized I couldn't save my game when I wanted to, leading me to literally have to replay parts of the game everytime I decided to play. WTF?!?! In this day and age, that is asininely ridiculous. If they can't get PC Gaming basics down, then they can stick to the inferior console.

Fable was not in any way an RPG. It was a typical hack and slash adventure game. More or less or an RPG I agree, but still, the way they tell the story is great compared to most games nowaday, and the voice acting is strong.
There was nothing that typical about it imo. It had enough small details to keep it apart from other games.

Why stop at dog armor. Chances are you'll have dog armor, car armor, truck armor, different types of vehicles, guns, gun armor, special ammos, special melee weapons, special npcs, plus all new quests and quest armor! |
