Age of Conan Memory Leak

In commemoration of the 2000th post to the Out of Memory Error thread on the Age of Conan Technical Issues Forum we highlight this issue that's impacting a number of players in Funcom's new MMORPG (thanks John). The initial posts suggests this CAD Forum post has a solution, but there are other users who seem unable to avoid memory related crashes, or to paraphrase one poster, involuntary logouts.

Even WoW was a nightmare to play the first few months. I remember having to wait thirty to sixty minutes just to be able to log in.

I never had a problem "playing" WoW the first few months due to performance issues, BUT...

People tend to forget that there was literally NOTHING to do in WoW the first 6 months. There were no epic raids, no armor sets to work for, no battlegrounds, no arenas, etc etc etc. I got to 60 the first month, and about a week later I started new characters for lack of anything else to do. So to say AoC lacks content is kind of premature. People have to understand that WoW has 3+ years of additions. *and they still haven't gotten around to doing anything like adding a single new class yet* You simply can't expect a game to come out and have everything that the current leading MMO has to do from day one. I bet in 6+ months the game will have a long list of new content. In 3 years, might not even look like the same game.

Yeah, Vista 32 seems to be stuck with the bug.

Since 2 patches ago (not including last nights one) I get:

-grey map - The Grey Map is more feared than The Red Hand!
-cartoon freeze - entire screen looks cell shaded, UI gone etc, freezes for 10 secs
-Your client has reported an error - happens once to twice before I get grey map.
-Texture failures - Sure sign that memory crash is incoming, some textures load up in extremely low rez (muddy/washed out) indicating the PC no longer has memory to load them.

They broke something via a patch and you'd think that would be easy enough to fix if they keep good changelogs.

ive been playing this game since launch day and it wasnt untill this last patch that i ever had the oom bug pop up. i had heard lots of QQing on the forum about a mem leak, but i never got it. (vista 32).

also, i still like the game, but ill point out some interesting observations:

no one ever seems to do any of the higer lvl dungeons. not sure why, i am in a fairly large guild that could do them any time they wanted, but i dont see anyone on the guild list in them, nor do i see anyone posting in the general or guild chanels lfg.

that leaves just pvp as the main endgame, and while i missed the seige that my guild did, im not sure that they are enough to keep anyone interested for very long. fc have said that they are introducing some new areas and some pvp objectives for general world pvp, but thats then and right now its not in.

im 72 with my demo and the biggest problem i have right now is that there is only 1 70-80 zone, and it is filled with roaming groups of pvpers. not easy to kill 25 wolves with 20 deathsquaders looking for fresh meat.

the seiges work now, and they appear to be great fun. ill post in another one of these when i get dto do one.

I guess I count myself lucky because I never encountered more than a few minutes of queue times during launch.

EVGA 8800GTS 640, so the same card. I run at 1680 x 1050 due to the LCD screen. FPS wise it depends. I typically run everything on max (full sliders and get 15-45 (typically 30+ but there are a few locations and interiors that love to eat up the FPS). If I'm going to an area that I know I'm probably gonna have to do some sort of pvp I turn off shadows and I go up another 20-30fps easy. Then again I only got to play 2 days on my system before going up north and playing on my mom's computer at 7fps (and getting to lvl 20 with it).

Glad to know I'm not the only one with that problem.

What video card you have? I had the occasional grey map but that was with my Nvidia card (8800 GTS 640). I just installed a HD 4850 because my wife's PC needed a new video cards so I bought this one and put the 8800 in her system. She's happy I'm happy and all for $199 plus tax.

Anyway I run it at 1900x1200 High and I have everything maxed. Getting about the same FPS (between 15 and 115 depending on the area and the PC population) but the game looks far better than before.

I'd bet everyone is getting those stalls. It started after the last patch for me. I get a short freeze then the message in the chat window saying the problem with my client has been reported.

That's how I start it but I still use XP. The only issues I have with it are the grey map bug (which I usually relog after it happens), and useually after the first 30 mins or so when in combat and using a combo the game appears to lock up for 5-10 seconds (studdering sound effects as well) and I get the message of an error has happened in the background.

Don't know why you would call this game a mess. Is it perfect? No. Is it fun and entertaining? For me... Oh hell, yeah! Is it complete? No MMO is ever complete.

How quickly people forget. Even WoW was a nightmare to play the first few months. I remember having to wait thirty to sixty minutes just to be able to log in. Not to mention other issues. That said... WoW was extremely polished even in beta but hey not every studio is Blizzard.

Over-all I'd rank AoC's launch near the top. I've beta tested and played released games that were ten times worse. Anyone remember WW2 Online? ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II_Online ) I keep meaning to check this one out again. See if it's as good as some say.

Either way I am loving the game. And realize due to different tastes some people hate it. Such is life. Though I would like to invite you to be more constructive with your criticism. Give details. Sometimes a problem you are having or can't figure out is something others have already surpassed. Plus it informs others which may help them to avoid purchasing a game they won't enjoy.

Have fun either way.

Edit: Half Elf, I have Vista 64 and only have occasional crashes. Again nothing out of the norm. Most crashes happen when I go to desktop... to turn on Fraps for instance. I used Vista's built in tool to find a solution and it recommended I use the Auto Update Tool for AoC. Funny thing is I always launch with the Auto Updater. Just makes sense to check for a patch before you try to log in.

Question is.. it seems this is a Vista issue and not XP (as I have not had it myself) correct?

2. I'm forced to admit I was wrong... Jul 2, 2008, 10:56 Umbragen

about this game, anyway. I initially gave it a 'thumbs up', but it was a premature assessment. I should have waited until I got out of the starting city, after level 20, at least. They could still make a go of it, but now that it's released they will have to fix what they have before they can get on with fleshing out the game. I'll check it out again this winter, but I think it will take them a good year to get this mess to where it should have been at launch.

I wish they'd fix the bank account leak issue. Canceled my account after three weeks and I don't miss this game.
