Ten Ton Hammer reproduces a
post from the
Age of Conan Forums (vexingly user-only) saying that Funcom has promised to
address inequities in attack speeds for female characters in their Hyborian Age
MMORPG in an upcoming update. According to the explanation, this was not an
intentional balance difference between genders, but a bug based on the length of
their attack animations.

Um.. unless your playing on a shitty system I don't see how you have performance issues. Balancing is being done, and if I remembered correctly, the design was suppose to be about the player, not what all they had on ala WoW. I'm having an AMD 4200mhz with a Radeon 1950XTX with 4 gigs of good DDR RAM. It's not the best but I bet it's the kind of system most of the players have atm, if not slightly better. The game runs like crap on this system which means I ain't the only one getting fps barely reaching 20fps. So stop talkin' bs about "shitty systems". It's tiresome. Extremely.. extremely tiresome.
Balancing is being done? I'm sure it is, but fuck me they're testing people's patience. Last month my 33 barbarian totally slaughtered a lvl 56 barbarian as if it was a lvl 12. This game needs some serious balancing and fast.
I have to requote this part:
the design was suppose to be about the player, not what all they had on ala WoW. Utter bullshit. You can only so much rely on your personal playing skills with a MMORPG, and also with this one. This ain't no Enemy Territory where your accuracy can make the big difference. Considering the fact that you have TONS more of skills with, lets say the WoW rogue, I can say out of experience that WoW PVP relies more on player skills than AoC is.
For the record: I cancelled my AoC account. Ironically, that crapgame reminded me how solid WoW is.. which caused me to reactivate that account.

I think it just means one more thing they don't have to try and balance and they can do it under the guise of equality.
So let me see if I've got this straight. You think Funcom is using equality as a ruse so that they don't have to balance something that's clearly stated in the manual as being equal? Aren't you even slightly embarrassed at the complete idiocy of what you're saying?
I get so tired of this crap. People just spout off with any old thing that pops into their head, no matter how ludicrous. What's worse, tons of other people read it and say to themselves, "Duhhh, yeah. That's right."
I don't have a hardon for Funcom--I didn't play past the first 30--but this gratuitous lying and bashing has got to stop.
On the female/male thing: IRL, the strongest female is not as strong as the strongest male, but that doesn't mean she's not stronger than any male. In a MMOG I can see having a female maxed out in Strength who's somewhat weaker than a male maxed out in Strength, but still much stronger than, say, a Mage or a Rogue.

What about a patch where they fix the horrible performance issues? And where they fix the more urgent balancing issues? And where they include some REAL loot? And where they oblibarate instanced maps and make it one big world so that there's a use to the engine feature to watch miles and miles into the distance?
Oh wait... that shit won't happen in a long long time, and some of it won't ever happen.
This game has "FAILED" written all over it.
Cheers, Vince

I want the patch that lets you chain them to the stove in the kitchen and makes the bitch cook and clean like she's supposed to. Id settle for a patch where they let me have a kitchen, or a stove to go in it, sir.

But on the other hand if you're a woman and want to play a strong head bashing woman rather than some comparatively frail, but more agile woman you'd be SOL. True, though you could still invest all your attribute points into strength. You just couldn't be as a strong as a male character.
I play both male and female characters in my games, as most games don't really distinguish between the two and I personally don't really have any preference. I find that playing female characters in single-player RPGs can offer some humorous/interesting dialogue. I just wish the differences were more substantial.

It is a fantasy game after all, how many guys do you who can run around swinging a 10lb sword cleaving through enemies all day? I can imagine a lot of men who'd be a little upset if they forced to play as a fat nerd because they happened to be one in real life.

Personally, I think it would be more interesting if there were actual benefits to choosing either male or females in more games. Females could have bonuses to persuasion when dealing with male NPCs (or certain female ones), greater speed and agility, mana, etc. Realistic? Not exactly but then, it's not realistic that males and females are equal in the game to begin with. Having differences between males and females would make the gender choice a more significant and meaningful one, rather than just an aesthetic one.

It's not political correctness. It's good game design. If you give players a choice between "strong" and "weak" with no benefits to playing the weak character (except the opportunity to impersonate a female), which do you think players will choose? This man is correct. People are pissed because something that had no advertised impact on game play is turning out to have an impact. The choice of male model is always better than female model in the game. Would you be complaining if male models attacked slower and they were fixing it. How about some other arbitrary thing, for example if you have more than eight letters in your name you do 25% less damage?

I know a lot of women that could kick Surf's nerd ass, in about 15 seconds. Really? The only butch lesbians I know would only be threatening if they sat on your face, though that seems an unlikely situation to get yourself into.

And I suppose in the real world women can bench press 400 pounds?
Enough of this American Politically Correct fucking shit. In the real world women can cast spells and take down 60 foot tall monsters?
Also, American? This game was made by Norwegians and is played on several different continents.
But anyway, like the previous poster said, its about balance. There is no point in offering an intentionally inferior character choice, because no one will pick it.
Your post wasnt very well formed Surf, even for you.
