A countdown timer has appeared on the
Cryptic Studios Website,
currently reading 27+ days and counting. The timer is under the "games" heading,
but there is no indication what is being counted down, nor is there any
accompanying hype indicating they expect anyone to be excited over this. The
image behind the timer seems to be science-fictiony: Star Trek Online
perhaps? We shall see. Update:
Shacknews says the art
is actually ST:O concept art, so indications are pretty strong that they are
preparing to beam us up.

I think STO will be great if Cryptic develops the game the way it was announced to be!
1. Open Universe. Go where you want, fight who you want, etc.
2. Interactive. Being able to walk around the WHOLE ship, and when your on duty in Engineering ... you can alter the ships systems. Like during combat you can cut off power to everything except weapons or shields, etc. I want to be able to play around with the controls... not have a point click. I dont like when the game tells you... we need to go to Tigris IV... You open up the navigation control and Surprise Surprise only Tigris IV is listed... wow which do I pick WAIT I Know... is it Tigris IV .... YEY!. Games like that should be left to toddlers and infants.... I have a education.... and surprisgly I can solve puzzles! :O

But me personally Im obsessed with Star Trek Supremacy... if you remember Birth of The Federation... this is the sequel. www.startreksupremacy.com

Star Trek: 25th Anniversary and its follow-up, Judgment Rites, were also both excellent.
I still remember the shock and horror expressed by the away team when you set your phasers to kill. "My God, Jim! How could you?!"

A creative developer could make a good game out of virtually ANY subject matter, so I have to believe that someone can make a good Star Trek game. Just 'cause it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it's impossible. But after playing CoH/V and it's lame/boring guests, it's possible that even 40 years of Star Trek material may fail to inspire them to produce something good. I'll at least check it out though, that's more than I can say for another superhero game.

Star Trek's death warrant was signed when it was revealed you wouldn't be able to move around your ships. Whats the point after that? Hell even in SWG you can be part of the crew of a large ship and do things like co-pilot, repair problems during combat like a blown plasma fuse lol.
Whats the fun of a Star Trek MMOG if you cant become an officer and have a position on a ship? I want to be an engineer and purposefully blow up some hyperdrives :p
Now that Cryptic has apparently gained the rights, maybe they can do it right for a change. CoX is and has been a good MMOG. Not very main stream but very.. very fun.

Only a few were good like star trek starfleet command and its sequels and that wasn't even based entirely on the star trek universe as shown in the tv shows, books, and movies, but instead on a modified alternate one. You're forgetting A Final Unity, which was much like an interactive episode of ST:TNG. I didn't play any of the ones earlier than that but I really enjoyed Final Unity. Star Trek had a lot of other good games. Armada I and II were both good, so was Bridge Commander, Klingon Academy, and Elite Force. I'm sure there are others that I'm forgetting.
Of course games in the Star Trek universe are "modified, alternate ones". Same goes for most other franchises, especially Star Wars. I'm sure that if a game itself is decent, it'd be able to stand on its own regardless of its franchise. If the X-Wing series hadn't had the Star Wars license behind it, the games would still have been good because the game's mechanics would still have made it fun and challenging.
EDIT : That said, I don't think Star Trek Online will be any good. I just don't see them making a Star Trek game that would appeal to me.

Star trek is dead. No movies, no tv series. Virtually all the games based on the franchise could not stand as a good game if they didn't have the star trek license behind it. In other words they could not stand on their own two feet without a star trek license. Only a few were good like star trek starfleet command and its sequels and that wasn't even based entirely on the star trek universe as shown in the tv shows, books, and movies, but instead on a modified alternate one.
