Eidos and Funcom announce that more than 700,000 Age of Conan accounts
have been created since the Hyborian Age MMORPG launched, leading them to claim
AoC is the "undisputed #2 subscription MMO in the western world," second, of
course, to World of Youknowwhat: Durham, USA – June 30, 2008 – Eidos and
Funcom are proud to announce that Age of Conan continues to dominate the PC
sales charts in all markets where the game is available. Over the last few weeks
it has remained the overall #1 PC game in most European markets, whilst also
performing tremendously well on several all-format charts. In the US, Age of
Conan impressively conquered the #1 PC spot for the first two weeks of available
NPD data. Due to the amazing interest surrounding the game, more than 700.000
gamers have now signed up for an Age of Conan account. In the second month after
release it is also clear that Age of Conan has taken the position as the
undisputed #2 subscription MMO in the western world.
When Age of Conan stormed into retail stores as what we believe to be the most
pre-ordered original PC game in history, it instantly became the best selling PC
game of May. The pace at which Age of Conan sold made it one of the fastest
selling PC games of all times, and Funcom and Eidos are therefore very satisfied
to see the positive sales trend continue. As all countries report sales
differently, it is not possible to get a complete overview of the exact box
sales at the time of writing, but Age of Conan remains the top selling PC game
in most all released markets. This includes being the #1 overall PC game in June
in the Nordic countries, Oceania, Germany, France and Spain, as well a top three
contender in all other markets where the game is out. No substantial sales data
for June is yet available from the US market, but Age of Conan was the #1 PC
game in the latest official NPD update.
“That Age of Conan remains #1 in retail stores several weeks after release is of
incredible importance to us, and proves that the game has a large potential
beyond the early adopters,” said Morten Larssen, VP of Sales & Marketing in
Funcom. “With more than 700.000 accounts created so far we have a fantastic
platform to build from, and we will continue our marketing spend to further
drive numbers in the months to come. It also means that Funcom can dedicate
significant development resources on evolving the game even further, naturally
giving us a great hope for the future of Age of Conan.”
“We are incredibly pleased to see Age of Conan turning into an MMO phenomenon,”
said Gaute Godager, Game Director on Age of Conan. “As an MMO company we know
that a good start is just the beginning for a virtual world. All we care about
now is to make Age of Conan into an even better game, and we have extensive
plans to ensure that Age of Conan remains a top MMO alternative for many years
to come.”

I put up a post about why I was canceling my account for this game and it was removed and I was warned about violating the rules of the forums. Read a plethora of reviews on a game before you buy it, you'll get an idea of how generally buggy it is...no fault but your own you were suckered into this.

>> Technical support is non-existant
No, it exists, just when you have 100,000 people, or 1/7th of your install base all calling in the same week because there are technical problems, your call IS NOT going to be answered.
The problem wasn't they don't have a good tech support staff, the problem was that the game was too buggy so TOO MANY people needed technical support.

With MMO's, you wait a full year before you sign up -- let others grapple with the inevitable bugs and features not yet working.

I think the music in AoC is top notch and goes great with the game. I chose not to subscribe after the 30 day free trial because I'm still not over my burnout from playing YEARS of MMO's, that being UO->EQ->DAoC->CoH, etc. I did find leveling to be pretty smooth and quick for an MMO, which I liked a lot.
I think AoC is a good MMO, and maybe down the road I'll fire it up again.

That's true, DX10 was never in. Why wait until people had their pre-order copies in their hands before letting them know that the advertisement on the box was false? Or do you think they didn't know they wouldn't have DX10 functionality in the game till the Fall of this year by 2 days before hand? DX10 was a big selling point of this game, in fact I believe it was supposed to be a Vista release title to showcase DX10.
Did Gaming News sites put words in Gaute Godager's mouth to hype the game? It's possible I suppose. I always figured that he just answered the questions. I'm not even assuming that he "pre approved" the questions, just that he answered the questions, so he hyped the game.
Why would I care what MMO, besides this one, had a smooth launch? I bought this game based on the promises and features advertised by Funcom, not based on other companies launches of titles I didn't buy. I want what I'm promised when I make a purchase, what's the problem with that...you know, getting what you pay for?
What sneaky dialog? How about the comment stating that sieges work great? Oh, but you can't build the city required to do them. Sorry, I suppose it's not sneaky, just "spin"...and then once the first siege happens they suddenly recognize there are issues...like no siege engines and walls can't stop people going around their edges. So does that make the spin into a lie? My opinion is that it does.
How full of yourself are you? Why do my reasons for not liking a game have to be "valid" for you? I didn't say you shouldn't like the game because of my reasons. If you disagree, that's great, but that doesn't make my reasons that I don't like the game invalid.
I don't really follow every MMO so I'm not even going to bother to try to find one that didn't have a mess up after a patch. Once again, I paid for this game. I have no idea why you insist on involving games I did not pay for.
How is their approach different? Quests? Please don't get into saying the combat is revolutionary, you're still button mashing. All they did is take Dance Dance revolution and slap it together with WoW and then claim that it's revolutionary. I'm glad you enjoy it, I'm sure there are many who do. I, however, do not view it as any different then other fantasy mmo's. You still use the same combos, you just decide which way to attack based on shields and you have to press multiple keys to get a special move. Oh, and there are boobs and blood. What other parts of this game deviate from the standard fantasy mmo?
The game feels like a bad WoW clone with elements of Dance Dance Revolution to me. If you disagree, that's great, but just because I have different expectations from the money I spend doesn't make my opinion invalid. You may not like my reasons, but they're MY reasons. The day I tell you that you should quit the game because of my reasons is the day your judgment of them will be warranted.

#19 For your information I didn't cut and paste shit, I didn't even make the picture, the picture was linked on the AOC test forums in a post where people where complaining about how the actual AOC forum is almost useless because "constructive" posts got buried with posts like that, here is another one for you.

And before you accuse me of trolling and cutting and pasting I didn't make that picture either. Now you can go back to praising all that is Funcom.

DX10 was NEVER in the game except a placeholder checkbox in the video settings. What other features did they remove from the game from beta to launch day?
And I once again who was over-hyping Age of Conan? Funcom or Gaming News sites that post anything and everything from when the game was announced to when the dev team took a collective shit together?
I will say that AoC isn't without it's bugs and issues, but besides WoW (sadly their servers were overloaded and killed half of them less then 24 hours after launch) name 1 MMO that has had a smooth launch? Granted I had a bit of an issue with a time card but that was resolved in less then 2 hours, and I've had excellent dialogs with the GM's in game.
And what sneaky dialog are they having with their customers? Ya have alot of reasons you say you dislike AoC but haven't mentioned any valid ones.
Oh and please name 1 other MMO to date that has never had some sort of major fubar after a patch went out and had to go down for emergency maintence.
I'm not a fanboy of Funcom, but I am enjoying a much 'different' approach to fantasy mmo's that they have presented. Again there are some issues, but so far I'm having a nice easy 'play at my own pace' experience.
Ya wanna talk about companies disrespecting their customers? Have you heard of Flagship Studios, or perhaps Lucasarts/SoE with Star Wars Galaxies?

Myself and 3 friends were playing AoC and it wasn't a horrid game, but it certainly wasn't all it was hyped up to be IMO. The combat system was novel, but after a week or two it was still a button mashing fest.
I think it's a good game if you're into MMO's, but I don't like Funcom. They over-hyped their product, they "offically" removed promised features the day or two before launch (DX10 as an example), they don't seem to bother testing their patches before release, they have zero customer support, and they are plain sneaky with their information and dialog with customers.
All 4 of us canceled. If it wasn't for Funcom I'd be willing to give the game a try in the future, but I don't want to put any more money into supporting a company that treats their customers with the disrespect Funcom does.

So I cancelled until they can learn to program for crossfire like every other game in existance. there are plenty of games that don't function properly with crossfire.

I've been doing "x to y" quests for about 40 levels are so, so far haven't done anything out of the MMO ordinary. This might change when I start participating in PvP sieges of course. Oh yeah, didn't they tell you? Those aren't in yet. Or as they like to put it, Sieges are in, there just aren't any guilds with Tier 3 cities because you can't build Tier 3 cities yet. So yeah, have fun with the amazing siege code we've implemented. That was about the point when I cancelled my subscription. That was a week or two ago, mind you.
Of course they may have fixed the problem with creating T3 cities by now, but considering it took them 3 weeks after launch to get stats to function... I have my doubts. Yes, that's right, at release the only stat that worked properly was Constitution. Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Wisdom... all useless at launch. It was cool. You could grind and kill and slave in a group dungeon for some kickass gear to realize after the fact that all that fancy equipment did exactly nothing to help you.
Edit: I've just checked and apparently they -have- corrected the issue and in the most recent patch they've put in the vendors necessary to buy siege weapons. You may now "apply" to siege someone elses battle keep. This message was edited at Jul 1, 09:35. |

The bugs I can live with except the one the makes the game perform worse in crossfire than on one card. Not the mention the fact you can't even see inventory icons in crossfire.
So I cancelled until they can learn to program for crossfire like every other game in existance.

Even without the Wow cash cow, Blizzard will take as long as they need to develops games. That's their way. And gamers know when a Blizzard game is released, it's not gonna be full of bugs and game stopping bullshit. It's amazing to me that the developers of AoC didn't realize that they needed to produce a game that is finished and virtually bug-free in order to compete with WoW. I've been turned off to MMO's since WWII Online, where it became common pratice to release a MMO obviously unfinished and unpolished and expect ppls to just deal with it. From what I see, Blizzard is the only company that has gotten it right- It will be released when it is complete!

captain obvious to the rescue! With the WoW cash cow, Blizzard can take as long as they need to develop Starcraft II and Diablo III. I'm ok with that.

Blizzard, Vivendi, Activision, etc. are publicly traded companies - they have to report their financial numbers accurately or go to jail. Most of their revenue obviously comes from WoW, they must report those numbers accurately, if those numbers are in fact wrong someone would have called them out on it, and no one has. Actually they can use whatever definition they want for "subscriber". As long as the money numbers they report are accurate, there is no problem. They can mangle the definition of "subscriber" till they are blue in the face.

Yeah, right. I doubt those numbers from the get-go. Regardless, let's see where they are in 3 or 6 months from now with their mess.
Whether you like it or not, Blizzard = WoW, and the upcoming Wrath, SC2, and Diablo III. Blizzard should change their name to 'License to Print Money'. Funcom is the Molyneux of MOG games. Long on promises, short on delivery.
