Heresy War Demo [May 13, 2008, 09:40 am ET] - Viewing Comments
As noted on the Dream Builder's
Studios Website, a playable demo is now available for
Heresy War, their combat space
simulator. The Heresy War media
page offers the demo and some screenshots showing what it offers. The 155 MB
download is mirrored on
ComputerGames.ro,
Gamer's Hell, and
Strategy
Informer, and here's a bit on what to expect: The Heresy War demo is
finally ready to be made public. The demo gives a taste of what Heresy War is
all about by putting the player in the cockpit during the first mission of the
game. This demo contains the following:
• A four-part mission from the single player campaign of
the game.
• Full voice-over dialogues for the campaign mission
• Original soundtrack
• The Instant Action game mode
• Multiple ship choice for the instant action mode
• Furious dogfights
• Capital ship combat
• .. and more!

I tried the demo.
It was definitely a throwback to the old days of space combat simulators.

I vote we find a way to slow down the planet to make 48hr days.
Time to get all smarty man on you bub. If you were to extend the daylight, you would still not be able to get around the millions of years of evolution that have resulted in our natural rhythms being based on a 24 hour day/night cycle. So you would still sleep around the same amount of time as you do now in the 24 hour day. This is evidence for this in regions of the earth near the north and south pole where humans still have similar wake/sleep hours even though night/day time lasts a few months as compared to the everyone else on earth.

Too many games, no time, must clone myself.. twice, one to play PS3 one to play Wii and original copy to play PC. Well I want a space combat sim, this seems cool, I'll try the demo.. but GTA is calling, Brucie wants to go for a helo ride... I vote we find a way to slow down the planet to make 48hr days.

"Is this game any good? Anyone check it out?"
Just played through the demo, as a fan of the genre I thought it was pretty fun. It's clearly not a big studio game, the graphics and sound effects are OK/mediocre, the controls feel pretty good and aren't so complex that you need to crack open a manual just to blow stuff up.
Does a good job of making you feel like you are flying through space, which is what I like best in these kind of games.

I am not preoccupied with the graphics. But when you go to a website the screenshots show you graphics they don't show you much gameplay.
Fair enough. Although I was replying to your comment, I didn't mean to imply YOU specifically were preoccupied with graphics. Just a general statement on what I see as an overall preoccupation.
Website reviews give large chunks of space to picking apart graphics, and/or they often show myriad screeenshot comparisons of different graphic settings. Developers spend inordinate amounts of time praising their new engine and its' "realism". To each his own, I guess. I love oohing and ahhing at the graphics after a new game install, but don't think it makes a whole lot of difference to my having fun in the game. Take Crysis... they could have used the Far Cry engine and the first half of the game would have still been a blast, and the second half would still have sucked. I still fire up X-Com, RoTT, Doom, Doom2, and Duke on occasion, and still have a blast.

Never understood the preoccupation with graphics anyway. Gameplay, gameplay, gameplay, imho. Gonna try this one out.

I'm going to give this one a try and I take back what I said about the graphics. This message was edited at May 13, 11:58. |

It looks like a generic space simulator and the graphics are very 1990's it seems: everything is jagged and it looks like a software 3d renderer is being used.
Then we must not be looking at the same screenies. Game looks great to me. (view 'em full size if your browser fits-to-view). Never understood the preoccupation with graphics anyway. Gameplay, gameplay, gameplay, imho. Gonna try this one out.
