Age of Conan Getting Very Testy [May 13, 2008, 09:40 am ET] - Viewing Comments
Funcom and
Eidos announce that they have accepted over (Dr. Evil voice) one million
sign-ups for the Age of Conan beta test and that a new "femme fatale"
trailer is on the Age of Conan Website. Here's
word on the beta sign-ups: Durham, USA – May 13, 2008 – Funcom and Eidos
are proud to confirm some of the impressive figures powering the Age of Conan
launch, and the two companies are happy to reveal that the Age of Conan Beta has
passed 1 million sign-ups! As one of the most anticipated MMO’s ever, the 1
million mark confirms the amazing interest in the game.
“Funcom has not been able to find any higher beta numbers for MMOs in the
western world,” said Morten Larssen, VP of Funcom Sales and Marketing. “We
believe it represents the largest ever beta sign-up figure in the history of the
genre.”
In addition to the incredible beta numbers, Funcom confirms that almost 800.000
gamers have signed up for the Clan of Conan newsletter. The hundreds of
thousands following the development of the game have moreover resulted in a
rapidly growing forum community. Last week Funcom registered over 115.000 posts
on the official forums, across four languages. This comes in addition to Age of
Conan discussions on external forums and in other languages.

Awesome, you play it at high resolution! But that doesnt change anything. If you like that cheap comic style with no atmosphere whatsoever, I dont care. I guess graphics and atmosphere like in EQ2 (even though the gameplay sucks) would blow your head off then.
Yes some classes have it hard to find groups. I have 5 70s 2 of them cant find groups easily. I sometimes sit in the queue for a whole day. Retribution Paladin... if you want to tell me its harder for a shaman to find a group than it is for a retadin, then, sorry, you have no clue at all. There is so much ignorance about Retadins, its unbelieveable. Also DPS warriors have it hard and feral druids if they dont want to/dont have to tank. Also rogues and hunters have it hard since there are so many of them and most groups already have 1 or 2 of em and dont want another.
Ah, the classic "you have no friends-argument". Kinda childish, but let me explain it to you that I dont like raiding at all. I still have guild, but theres a problem... Im a casual player with weird times. Yes, I have friends in that game but they have completely different play times than I do and we can only play together on weekends. I have to rely on PUGs for the other situations since my guild raids mostly when I am on and so no one will have time to group for normal instances. Anyway I am not alone in that situation. Seems like you dont talk much with other players if you think everything is fine.

I'm in closed beta. I had major crash/performance problems a few months ago, but the latest client has fixed all of that for me. It's very much playable now (well, for me at least). My highest level character was level 29, so I didn't get to see much of the world. It got more fun once you get out of Tortage, though
I wasn't in the beta before they revamped the combat system. If I understand correctly, the way it worked before was that you executed your combos just like in for example street fighter. Now you click the combobutton and then the direction. I kind of liked the old system (on paper). Did any of you play in beta back when it was still in? Which of the two do you prefer?

Just a tip. Run the Funcom downloader over the top of the files once you've extracted them; it runs an integrity check over the installation files. I had a few issues installing from the iiNet mirror. I've also head of people having problems with the internode mirror too.
Something that will hopefully save your sanity ... well what little we have left anyway.

But it does have some subtle complexities and it most definitely isn't 'easy mode' like WoW is. I think that will send a lot of the WoW kids back to WoW.
Those of us who are adult or mature enough to enjoy the hidden complexity and are sick of easy mode MMOGs, should have a great game and a good community to look forward to. It takes a high degree of skill to pack so many stereotypes into a few words.

I played in the open beta, and the experience convinced me to wait for a few months to see if they can work out the kinks in this game. It is very rough around the edges and lacks the polish of LotRO or WoW. I am also worried that the real-time combat where you pick a direction to attack from, have to maintain your facing against your opponent who may be bunny-hopping his ass off, at the same time you control the facing of your own shield, all while trying to play Simon-says to get your combos to work correctly, may get more than a bit annoying in the long run. Also, the way they have PVP servers set up, the world PVP just turns into one big gank-fest with gankers camping at the resurrection respawn sites.

Games aren't the only thing on my system.
Well, obviously you need to work on that
Seriously though, if you're using it for that much you'd be well served by grabbing a high capacity SATA drive anyway. The cost is fairly low these days, and it'd help you for a lot more than just installing larger games. I doubt it's a trend that's going to go away any time soon.

I have 170GB available. I won't dedicate ~14% of my drive space to a single game.
What else are you going to use it for? Audio files (high quality music samples... make music), art assets (Photoshop, Illustrator), huge Flash files, Podcasts, video files (Vegas, DVD, et all)... more. Games aren't the only thing on my system.

I'm hoping a little more complex gameplay weeds out some of the idiots as well. I've already seen the forum post from the disgruntled assassin who couldn't take on two mobs at once even though he "played combat rogue for over 2 years in WoW!!". Oh, and tried 'sneaking' towards them by walking directly across a well lit area right up to their faces. /facepalm Same here man. The game isn't by any means the most complex MMOG I've ever played, (that would be Funcom's Anarchy Online in it's first year or two.) But it does have some subtle complexities and it most definitely isn't 'easy mode' like WoW is. I think that will send a lot of the WoW kids back to WoW.

Hello Viral Marketer. So over the past 6 months with the bug fixes, crashes, and all the issues that must have been a problem, and missing features, content, etc, that has only been added recently (I'm assuming)....after all that, this is still better than SWG the early days which was a full game out on the market, (ie well past the alpha and beta stages)....do I have that right? You can take the tin foil cap off lol. I'm just a long time MMOG gamer who has found a MMOG that I can truly enjoy again.
I've been in beta since late october, (you'll note a large percentage of forum vets also got in then,) and said myself the beta wasn't the best I'd been a part of, in terms of bugs and technical issues. However the core of the game has been there for a long time and very very fun, IMHO. As to most the content missing until 'recently' thats not the case, accept for Spellweaving. All the other features have been in beta for several months.
And you need to learn to read. I didn't say 'better then SWG in the early days' I said 'I haven't had this much fun in a MMOG since the early days of SWG. It's not like SWG beta (and release) wasn't buggy and laggy and incomplete at release itself.

there's been more than one thread started by adults who have a problem with nudity in the game ...it's not just teens that make some in the community seem immature
anyways the forums were best from 2005-2006 when it was mostly filled with fans of robert e howard ..it wasnt till the MMO players came in droves that the forums went downhill

But once the game goes live it'll require an account to post on. So I am very confident that 80% of the crap on the current forums will disappear. Assuming some parents grow some balls and tell their lovely little fucktard that he's too young to be playing a mature game (and ergo annoying mature players with his bullshit).

As to the forum community. Two or three months ago it was a great community. But as the hype for the game increased, so did the number of WoW kids on the forums who seem to think thats how the entire internet behaves.
