While you may be able to get a pre-built system for about the same price as you could build one, you have no idea what parts Dell, Gateway, HP or anyone else will be using in their system. If you plan on ever upgrading that system, the parts used would be vital information to have BEFORE you buy. Dell is infamous for using the cheapest parts they can get in order to meet their price points and upgrade-ability has never been a factor in their decision making process in this regard.

The price of building and the price of buying have been neck and neck for a long while. That retail gateway announced the other day is pretty much right there with the parts on newegg, maybe 10% more. But for that 10% you get a warranty on the whole system and support.
If Dell still put decent graphics cards in non-XPS desktops and still had $750 off $2000 they'd be cheaper than you could build. I should know; my last computer was a Dell for that exact reason. For better or worse. I figured if it sucked I'd strip the parts out and throw it into something better. Maybe I should have, that power supply is a bit weak.

Honestly these days there are decent premade systems that include lcd monitors and printers cheaper then the price of putting one together. Now by decent I mean casual gaming/email/internet, as I was looking at putting together a system for my mom, but since she wants a LCD monitor, it's cheaper to get a dell type system that includes the monitor.

#1: Why am I buying a premade machine when I can make my own for cheaper and know exactly what I'm getting?
